    Hi Guy, Have a look at the Vital synthesizer... It is the first synth I truly felt at home with and once I tried some of the modulation I was designing my own sounds (albeit completely mad sounds at first) and I feel relatively comfortable sitting down and programming the simpler stuff, and then applying the crazy modulations to it. I think a lot of your subs would love it, and another thing... It's free!

    • @lofomuses
      @lofomuses 2 года назад +1

      Vital does look compelling... and I have also had my eye on Obsession, just because Guy said it was a great synth. But I am far from fully exploring the synths I already own, notably Omnisphere 2, Pigments, Massive X. So many filters/LFOs, so little time!

    • @AKAtAGG

      I pay for subscription for Vital because I think the designer (Matt Tytel) deserves money for coming up with a plugin that beats Serum, and then gives it away. It's easily the best free synth VST Plugin, Audio Units Plugin, VST 3 Plugin, LV2 Plugin and it can be used standalone as well. Amazing piece of work. Gave it away for nothing. Legend.

    0:57 3 or 4 main things that go on in a synth.
    1:32 First thing, the sound source, normally called oscillators
    2:07 2nd, Filters, and 3rd, Envelopes. Showing how this looks in 2 other synths.
    2:38 ES1
    3:26 Wave form, square wave, sine wave, these are the basic ones.
    4:08 Filters, they take some of the initial sound, subtractive synthesis. Lowpass = allows low sounds to pass. 18 / 24 dB = how sharply it filters, demo. Bandpass = lets one band of the sound pass. And deep notch.
    6:20 Envelopes. 4 sections - ADSR, demo. Play with it to learn how it works.
    8:28 Adding the filter envelope. ENV AMT knob determines how much the filter envelope affects the filter. If the amplitude cuts the sound off then the release won't make a difference, amplitude takes priority over the filter envelope. How they work together is interesting.
    10:28 Message from sponsor
    11:00 Building a sound
    11:21 Pulse Width, demo.
    11:55 Reso - Resonance, demo.
    12:42 Turn it into a pad, more attack and release. It doesn't sound big because there's just one oscillator working, can have many oscillators playing the same note. Turn it into an orchestra by adding more unison voices, and increase the spread.
    14:03 Add FX with FX bus. Reverb, delay. Change PW. It's not hard. Because you understand how it's done, you can then mess with it.
    14:53 Category 4, modulation. LFO = low frequency oscillator. Use Mod Matrix, select LFO 1.
    15:58 Filter cut off, select Filter 1 Cutoff as destination. LFO 1 will now affect the Cutoff. Turn up the amount, increase rate, sync it. Demo of amount.
    16:49 Change shape of low frequency. Demo. Much of the time, the modulation matrix is the complicated part.
    17:40 Controllers to modify the sound. Demo of assigning controllers on your hardware to control things in the synth, Right click > MIDI Learn.
    19:40 Make LFO 1 go to Osc 1 Pulse Width, demo. Now LFO 1 changes the pulse width automatically.
    20:47 Wrap up. Get stuck in.
    21:20 Find each synth's speciality. What Dune 3 is good at. Obsession. Every one is rich and different.

    So helpful! I've never seen an explanation of synths that was so down-to-earth and so easy for beginners to get their heads around. I've been using a bunch of synth plugins for a while now, and I never really understood what I was doing. Now I'll attack it with a renewed commitment and better understanding. Guy, I’ve never left a comment as yet but have been following you since the first lockdown. Just want to thank you for everything I’ve learnt! It’s been an inspirational journey and given me confidence in blending electronic with sourced samples e.g. Spitfire. You’ve also helped my understanding of composition. If anyone new reads this, I’d highly recommend subscribing as you won’t find anyone as experienced willing to strip down concepts that feel complex and intimidating into down to earth, comprehensive chunks without being patronising - an art in itself! I’ve been struggling with several synth manuals recently (Absynth, FM8, Massive, Diva especially) and lost motivation. In typical fashion, Guy knocks out a brilliant tutorial and in 30 minutes saves me several hours. Might buy the full version of Dune too. Cheers mate!

    Guy, just adding to the gratitude you are receiving. You really made it easy to understand concepts that seem quite complicated. I had purchased a few Behringer synths and ended up selling them as I could not make heads or tails of how to generate useful sounds. If I had your explanation, I would have kept them all most likely. I second the opinion of seeing a video on sequencer functions. That is another area that seems hit or miss without understanding what impact moving a box or checking a switch actual does. Again, thank you for all the time you spend on creating your videos. They make a real difference.

    Yes, people make sounds for a living and then sell them as patches or banks. It melts my head that people sit there creating these sounds for a synth someone already owns for which, with the right knowledge, could create those sounds themselves. Then they purchase those patches and banks, essentially paying someone else to tweak their knobs for them.
    It's a strange world we live in.

FOSS soft-synths such as ZynAddSubFX are more capable than multi-$1000 collectors hardware from the 1980's and 1990's. That should be a fun topic some day if you're willing to go there.

I know what they do but just seems counterintuitive that clockwise rotation of the lfp knob is introducing high frequencies. I know I must be thinking about this backwards. Are we actually turning the filter off by rotating clockwise? Maybe it's an American thing. I have had a German car for years and still cannot get used to the fact that dialing clockwise zooms the nav out instead of in!

    • @KazmMusic
      @KazmMusic 2 года назад

      I’m not Guy obvs lol but you’re going to want to try and emulate what your instruments are doing with your synth. I find that running everything through a reverb/delay send but giving the synth more of it than the live instruments can be helpful in glueing stuff together as long as you don’t go overboard. Adding movement to a synth so it’s not as static will help too, as you’re getting a very dry ‘perfect’ sound from a synth and so it won’t carry the ‘imperfections’ of and instrument. Subtle volume frequency and filter automation can be a great way to do this :)

    I like it when they sound like evil death chimes from hell.
