Last weekend I lost control over my xc bike during stupidly fast downhill. I ended up crushing face down on the rocks and I hitting my head on the tree trunk. The energy of impact was enormous, I was just stunned by its force and speed. I heard a strange cracking sound and I was absolutely convinced that it had just broken my spine. To my surprise my head, my face and my spine were intact, so were my glasses. My POC Tectal looked also intact, but then I realized that the padding was much thinner and harder than before the crush. It simply absorbed energy of impact. I loved this fancy, very comfortable cobalt blue helmet, although sometimes I used to find myself thinking „Will I ever get my money back during my mediocre cross country rides ?” I will keep it as a warning on the garage shelf forever. My new navy blue Tectal is on his way to me. ..
Great review! I’ve been looking for a new helmet. I was down to the fox speed frame pro and the Poc Kortal. You just sold me on the Poc. Thanks and Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Excellent review, thanks Dieter. We’ve been looking at POC for more safety, I like how you said it makes you feel more confident. Hopefully that will be my experience too. You’ve sold me! Thanks, Sue
I just got me and my wife new Helmets. I ended up getting the Tectal mips and she got the Kectal. I try them both and loved them both. The coverage is amazing. They are the best helmets we both ever had.
Had the same problem with my head shape. Tried a few top tier mbt helmets, and sended them back. After seeing your review I ordered a poc tectal race mips. Liked the shape of the tectal more. Its a perfect fit.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the two helmets. ATM I’m still using a 2022 Tectal. Had to replace my old one after a crash. So I can say the Tectal was a life saver for me so I got the same one again. The Kortal is on my list if I find it on sale maybe at the end of the season. So for me your review was helpful and it confirmed my thoughts on POC helmets in general. Safe rides man…
Great review! I struggle so much finding helmets to fit my head measuring at 62cm’s! (Must have Dutch or Belgian ancestry)😂 Gonna try the Kortal anyway following your review. Thanks. Those alpine adventures sound sublime by the way. Very envious!
Great review. I wonder if the designers of the visors ever go out for a ride, when the sun is in a lower position. The visor of the Kortal is fix positioned, the Tectal visor can be adapted. Even in the lowest position, the Tectal visor can't prevent the sun shining in my eyes. I put a piece of plastic of 1 cm between the end point of the visor and the screw to lock the visor position. This makes it possible to place the visor in a position that filters the sunshine out of my eyes. You are absolutely wright when you say that the Kortal has a more robust look, however the fix visor made me choose again for the Tectal with data chip. As I leave, just like you, on my own for a couple of weeks my home for a long distance trip, having the possibility to be tracked, gives everybody a better feeling.
🙌🙌😎😎 Watching your video helped me a lot , since my head is bald, I happened to buy my new helmet, a Specialized Tactic 4 (mod. 2023) that I love for its color and shape, but when I took it out of the box and put it on my head for the 1st time it didn't fit as comfortable as my old Giro (mtb)... and I was a bit scared because its fit is not 100% perfect for me. I will use it, to soften its pads, and maybe even buy a set of extra pads to put inside the neck where my head rests against the MIPS since it doesn't have any padded support in that area, and we'll see what happens.
Great video for me personally, convinced me to go for POC. I am dutch and indeed have the same shape head as you described, however I'm at around 58cm and that always puts me in between an M and an L, can't decide which size to get and no stores here have this brand to try out!
@@DieterVanHolder Yep! Ironically in NL you'd think cycling gear would be everywhere but with no mountains or hills comes no MTB'ers unfortunately! What would be your guess for a 58cm with similair shape to you? M/L or L/XL?
@@Juuul89 I still have quite a bit of space in the larger one that I need to close with the lock at the back of the head. Based on that you could try the smaller one. But it's a guess and this is the only information I can give you to help with this choice. Please let us know what you end up deciding and the result. Good luck 🤞
I just got Kortal and I've noticed that it doesn't work great with my glasses, the arms are not getting easily between my head and helmet. Have you tried it maybe? And did you see that tectal is better in this matter? Cheers
Hey Dieter! Great quality content! I prefer the appearance of the tectal but it seems that it doesn’t have any sunglasses storage channels like the kortal does. Is that the case?
More of a xc rider, so thinking this is a bit more focused towards trail/enduro stuff but seen one in sale with mips for £75 🤔 was looking at the forefront 2 but I dunno 🙈🙈🙈🖤
If you're usually riding in lycra and with people in lycra this helmet is going to look huge and out of tune. I'm currently wearing it on a multi day mountain tour and to my surprise two people have already complimented the helmet
@@DieterVanHolderoh I say xc but it's trial riding just more the mile munching side rather then the riding down jumping stuff that seems to be the only thing marketing focuses on these days side, my tld A2 has seen better days and for £75 the kortal just seems like a bargain
@@joshjenner1 oh yeah man then go for it. I'm a 38-year old average rider with average fitness and can't find content that matches what I actually enjoy riding either. I'm out in the Alps right now and I will upload a video with such riding soon. I'm already mentally prepared for it to take 2 days of editing for 70 views 😄
@@DieterVanHolder yea so much stuff is pigeon holed into this and that, but in truth the average joe does a real mix, hahaha just sneak in a few naked ladies and the views will go up 😅
What about the ventilation for hot weather and the difference in those front vents under the visors? Because looking head-on you see a couple large openings on the Kortal but not Tectal. What purpose do they have? Thx ✌🏼
The Kortal has extra openings to potentially keep sunglasses in. I've been riding in 30°C these past weeks and the Kortal performs well. On the other hand, I am a bald guy so I need it more to protect me from sunburn than anything else. The openings are so large the skin of my head burnt. I don't remember this ever happening with the tectal. Even when sweating both helmets remain comfortable for me.
@@DieterVanHolderYou can try to wear cap like the Castelli Summer Skullcap. I have this cap since 2 or 3 years and it is great. Absorb sweat and helps Keep the helmet polster clean.
Very nice discussion - Just what I was looking for. My head is long, 59 as well. What size do you have ? M-L or XL-XXL? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work 👏
Great review Dieter, I like you got a tectal in 2018 and crashed the same week. I can tell it protected my head well. I had the same issue as you with the plastic thingy pressing on my ear, I thought it was due to the size being too big (xl/xxl) but then 3 years later I saw a youtube video where a guy did a vertical adjustment and bum! no longer a problem... on poc webstie they don't explain this... so silly. here's the video: ruclips.net/video/ZWcHA-qusxM/видео.html
What a great find! Just ordered my Tectal and Kortal to try out both (great summer sale!) and I’ll always be wearing sunglasses, so I am lucky thanks to you how to fit it! Thanks a lot, Sjoerd, and then you know I am Dutch 😂(living in Switzerland)

Do they both have removable Velcro pads? If so are they the same for each helmet or they both take different type Velcro paddings?
