Keep doing a great job....I own a construction firm here in Barbados and this incident fascinates me. It's not often that an event like this happens thankfully, so I'm taking the opportunity to learn everything I can from this and the information I gather from your series is much appreciated...Your channel is my primary source for info and I've been here from day one.
Thanks Juan. Appreciate your illuminating the back story on the chain of systems deficiencies emerging after 40+ years of Administration slumber. My engineering administration experience of over 45 years has taught the futility of advising nontechnicals of the value of anticipating failures and acting in an organized fashion to make improvements. Hope some viewers learn some lessons here.
Infrastructure is incredibly important to not just maintain but also to improve, sadly the far right conservatives claim it is a waste of money and the far left liberals scream about the environmental impact resulting in our infrastructure being outdated and in many cases getting dangerously close to catastrophic failure. Major infrastructure like dams and bridges should have a 20 year upgrade cycle with regular maintenance cycles between upgrades. The valves in the dam should have been completely replaced twice during the 50 years the dam has been in operation.
Those are great reasons for me to be glad that our President has been trying to explain to Congress the importance of spending money on these complex engineering feats to encourage their repair. Juan stated in one of his video's that a dam's first job is flood control. I can see how important that is to our homes down river.
Governer Brown doesnt give a Crap about his Farm areas in Northern and Central California, they only care for thier Libtard Cities, they take care of the Freeway thats about it. We need a TRUMP in Sacramento
Keep up the good work Juan. I think you have done a great service to those of us that are not able to be there in person. Being a pilot myself your detail and thoroughness shows that you care. Your ability to relate with your viewers is commendable. Thank you again for a job well done!
good afternoon. I just wanted to tell you what a piece of mind you have left me with. my family lives along the river and I have been watching your videos since January .you are very educated person with common sense. you have had me and my family at ease with the info and subject you're doing at Oroville. thank you very much David. PS you should have your own news station.
I'd love to hear more about you flying the 777. What a majestic beast it is. Maybe when the dam situation is in the clear you can tell us about flying. Great job so far!
The Triple 7's are a beautiful plane. I rode one out of Kathmandu where we boarded up a stair ramp from the ground which gave me time to look it over standing next to it on the ground. I was born in 1940 and spent my life mesmerized watching the continuous progress we've made in aircraft design. I put in 7 hours on a Cessna 120 about 30 years ago. I still enjoy using that experience to understanding the control of the giants that you fly. It must be a treat to fly your own plane to the whim of your heart's desire rather than being bound to a strict flight plan of your work days. It's gratifying to see your love of life spreading beyond just flying but also into applying the same discipline and care and thoroughness into this valuable, enlightening project you've created around the Oroville dam project. Thank you from all of us!
Today is September 20,2017 did you ever imagine how you and channel would grow to this stage. My wife and I continue to enjoy your efforts you put into finding and reporting the best information not the hype of the day. OH NO THERE IS A GREEN SPOT ON THE DAM!! Thanks again
When it comes to the dam you are the only one I watch!!!!! No one else seems to know what they are talking about!! Thank you for telling the whole story!!!!
Hi, I'm really glad that you introduced yourself & gave us a quick resume - I had guessed at pilot, but was unsure. I'm really appreciating your hyperbole-free commentary and fact/evidence-based reports. Seriously, you are an excellent journalist - thanks. Cheers, -- ChrisP Bristol, England
Ron: You do a fabulous job of reporting and keeping us up-to-date. I've viewed you daily since the Oroville spillway structure disaster. Keep going strong, my man!
It's interesting how things work out with the right person, in the right place, at the right time. Your videos have grown a life of their own to the point that many of us look forward to them each day. You provide a lot of information and some neat indepth detail, without all the fluff of the mainstream media or the RUclips pages of alarmists.
Juan, I must say that YOU are so good at putting out ACCURATE info and breaking down complicated info so that folks can understand. I work in a field that gives me a great deal of civil engineering, geology, natural history, etc., and I completely trust and agree with what you put out there. Keep up the good work and thank you for keeping things accurate!!!!!!!!
Juan wrote an article back in 2011 about his experience on 9/11. He talks a little about his piloting. www.theunion.com/news/local-news/aviation-took-a-nosedive-after-911/
Thanks for the info and update, I honestly think the DWR, law enforcement and the CA Gov should be thanking you for the honest coverage of the entire event as well. No fluff and no hype. Reminds me of the dude on the show Dragnet back a few yrs ago, "Just the facts mam".
Thank you Juan Brown! You are providing the best journalism on the whole Oroville story. Accurate history and science without the bs. Really appreciate the work you're putting into this.
It looks like you really enjoy digging into all of this for us. We're very thankful. One of these days, I hope we'll get some information about what looked to me to be a potential failure of the overflow system. Under full flow over the emergency spillway, the parking lot to the north still swamped and water was leaching out of the hillside. I'm curious as whether it was weakened. Thanks again for your efforts.
Infrastructure maintenance lacks the glamour needed to rouse the public's support until imminent disaster can't be denied, or until it's beyond too late to do anything but salvage and recover bodies! Thanks for explanations that a layman can comprehend. You're doing a valuable service.
Thank-you for another really interesting update. It seems that trouble doesn't exist on its own, it invites its friends over for a party! My family pray for you all, all the best from Scotland.
Started with you at number 2 video and glad I did. Oroville updates, busy yellow 'ants', flying high, train trips, family, snowfalls, biking in the snow, the sights of the Sierra's...gorgeous. Thanks, Juan. Charlotte (Ontario, Canada). x
Juan, this just gets better and better, doesn't it. The deeper you dig at Oroville, the more issues you find. And I wonder just how long "management" has known all of this. Multiply this by the number of dams in California ... and the existing snowpack with summertime coming (and we know how quickly Sierra snow melts -- flash melting comes to mind). Holy ...
I can honestly say you have did a outstanding job on this channel over the Orville Dam problem for sure and thank you for taking the time out of your day to do this for all of us.. Anyway look forward for the next video and again Thank you..
Juan ... Thank you so much for putting some of your 'off time' into providing us with the valuable information about the issues at the Oroville complex. It is very much appreciated!!! I grew up a few miles from Hungry Horse Dam in northwestern MT. I actually got to see it during construction although I was pretty young and didn't really realize the significance of what I was seeing. Thank you again and I hope you can continue with this video series!!! Fly safe and keep an eye on those tall rocks down south!!! ;0))
Thanks, Captain! Your reports are the most credible I have found while trying to stay abreast of this developing crisis. Keep up the great work! Integrity is hard to find these days! Thankz!
Waving HI from the UK. It's really refreshing to here quality technical news of an interesting event, how the engineers are responding and now your putting it into a historical context. If only real news organisations followed up on all events like this, especially once they fall off the front page. Great work. Thanks. Ps, i'll add my vote to you doing a mini series on aviation. :)
I've just spotted you do have an aviation playlist which il take a look at. That looks like it covers local flights on a quick glance. I'm really liking the engineering and technical aspect of your Orville Dam videos so would be particularly interested to see topics like that on aviation. Perhaps looking at air safety and how its evolves in response to incidents. Or maybe the logistics behind the scenes at an airport. The key thing here is hearing about of all the great work everyday people working to keep us safe and the world moving.
Thank you Mr. Browne for the wonderful job that you are doing with these videos! So much misinformation out there, it's been great to hear it from someone that is actually informed, and not just fear mongering. I have been lucky enough to have worked at almost every DWR facility in Ca, as a contractor providing services. I was there feet away providing standby rescue for the baffle ring removal and repair of the pressure relief wall. Your information is quite accurate, thank you sir!
Congratulations on the quality of this informative video series. The local media here in the UK have not reported this story since the emergency evacuation so this series is great for us Brits to keep up with the ongoing saga. Nice pronunciation of "turbine" too! ;)
Thanks Juan. Another great report. I just cannot express enough, how important your time and hard work putting these videos together is. Without you we would all be at the mercy of speculation, opinion and fear mongering. So easy to fall into all that. Keep the vids coming. We really appreciate them.
I should have pegged you as a pilot! Just wanted to say I've watched all of your videos, appreciate your consistency, level of detail and unbiased view of the events taking place at the Orovile dam.
Juan, your series of videos on Oroville have been great, and a welcome relief from the hordes of panic merchants and conspiracy theorists out there. One thing that I was really surprised by in all of this is that some engineer actually signed off on an emergency spillway dumping onto bare dirt. This has been done not only in the design and construction of the dam but in the relicensure process 12 years ago. The people who designed it are certainly all retired or deceased, but the people of California should understand that within 24 hours of the overtopping of that emergency spillway for the first time since the dam was built, people had to be evacuated in a panic. That thing was never designed to be used and any engineer claiming it to be safe is a damned liar.
Introduced to your channel by the great Oroville Dam coverage you have been providing. Also really enjoy the videos about your many other interests. I would love to see some videos on the 777. Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you so much, Juan Browne ! Another illuminating report from something that most all of us living close to that big 900' tall dog wake up thinking about every day.. :) Your great, detailed, unbiased, work is wow - world class - and so much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time after all that airtime - how do you do it ?? :) Best to you and your Familia for sharing you with us !
Mr. Browne - thanks so much for all the great info - fascinating! We continue to keep the people of Oroville and surrounding area in our prayers and look forward to your vids to keep up on the news!
Thank you Juan for all your efforts in keeping us up to date with the situation at Oroville dam. Though I live on the Big Island of Hawaii most of my family are in the Central to North California valley, therefore your timely and accurate updates have relieved allot of stress that I would be enduring if I only had corporate media news to depend on for information. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! :)
Thanks again Juan...another informative and upbeat report. Your descriptions and explanations are said in an understandable way, which I appreciate. I got behind last week with watching your reports as I had some personal issues to deal with, but so glad you continue to report and keep all of us in the loop. Looking forward to your next report.
I appreciate what you are doing Juan. I struggled to find information that made sense to me before I found you. Not surprised that you have got a large following.
I have to agree with Shaky. That would be a great idea ,to see and hear some flying stories, pics and video! Stay safe on your travels Juan , thanks for your devotion as a pilot and all that you share. Cheers to you and your family!
Hey Juan, all from that one video. I bet you did not see this coming. I think what it is about your reports and videos that has me constantly checking to see if you have released something new is that you have delivered a no bulls*#t fact filled form of media. So I want to thank you again. Thanks Man. Why this entire project has had me captivated from the start I think is the craving to to always learn something new ( " More input number five " ) ( its a from a movie ) I am down here in Roseville and I so wanted to go make a pest of myself on that hill until I was hired. Depending on who you ask ..yes I do have a heart. But C.H.F, 2 stents and a "thing on the lung" at 49 years SUCKS!!! This will not stop me, its all about my son now. 13 and the "grey" is coming. So back to the Damm Dam, all we can hope for is that we all learn from this, I am not saying the politicians, I talking the general public. Back when this dam was completed our governor at the time was there to blessed it that day. Well Ronald Regan went on to be our president. On the last day he was in office he gave his "exit speech" to the people of the U.S. He said " People of the United States, you need to remember that we the government are here for you, and you are not here for us" Somehow we have lost sight of that. Please everybody please wake up!!! That exit speech is a must see. Alright then..... Keep up all the good work Juan, to you hats off!! Richard wdkiler@yahoo.com
You are doing an excellent job of providing coverage of this flood event. I was flooded out in 2011, so I know the value of accurate timely information. I enjoy watching all of your videos! Thanks for all your effort! I have to comment on the Oroville Dam and the use of River Outlet Valve during spillway operation. Since the discharge tunnel for the a River Outlet Valve uses the same discharge tunnel that the Power Plant Turbine use. It appears that using the River Outlet Valve when the river water is high would have the same effect as operating the Turbines when the discharge lake level is too high. This could increase water pressure in the tunnel because of high discharge water levels and could end up flooding the turbine area. High water pressure could lift the turbines out of their mounts and flood the area, like what happened in Russia. They need to find a solution to the discharge levels, as the it is ridicules that they can't use the turbines river outlet valves to reduce the lake level when the spillway is operating. Apparently the power station was installed at too low of elevation compared to the river channel downstream of the dam! They could remove all dams downstream of the dam to lower the river level below the dam, but that would mess up their complete irrigation systems! If the lower dams were added after the dam was constructed, it would explain how the final operational design does not function properly because it raised the final operating level of the river!
All this information about the river valve system is part of that wealth of knowledge in the world that I had no idea existed. We know so little as individuals. Thanks for the research into what is going on in the big picture at Oroville Dam. It is a lot more than just a hole in a spillway. PS from a fellow pilot (although I am just a SEL private pilot) Grandin
thanks again for update. I'm in Oregon. I've learned much about dams and waterways from you. very interesting and important to know. your reporting caused me to research what's going on with dams where I live. fortunately we are in good shape.
After doing some conversions I'd like say 100k cfs is much more impressive in real life than any video. As we now realise after seeing the work there is no reference for the huge scale involved. There is a dam here in Qld Australia that has a 1653ft uncontrolled spillway, we were there a week before it peaked at 22ft, approx 122k cfs. I guess it would have been close to 100k cfs when we witnessed what I still find hard to put into words. When we revisited the dam several years later and walked at the bottom of the spillway I finally realised the shear scale of the dam and what we witnessed. Thanks Juan for the great job bringing this info to the world and a big hello from Australia.
Yes indeed, viewers from around the wold - I am Hanno, from Hamburg, Germany and looking your status videos every day now since three weeks. Very informative, politically neutral but focused on the things around the dam. Love your videos! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for doing such a thorough job at keeping us all informed. Peeling back the layers and learning just what a less than stellar job they have been doing keeping this dam in order. Good Work!
Juan, thank you again for another thoughtful and informative presentation without the hype. We share our love of flying; I retired from Delta back in 2003 flying the B767-400. Keep up the good work!
I've been fascinated by Oroville lake/dam for some time before the recent events and really appreciate you taking time to post all these vids and info. Thank you! Stay safe.
Welcome back home. I'm impressed with the scenery change from your back porch... It seams the inflows at Oroville reservoir are going to increase soon, though... thanks!
Your postings have been the more informative and credible than any others. Compliments for avoiding speculation on the motivations/agendas of so many others
Now we have a much better understanding of how the RVOS works, thanks to your excellent details on the subject! And we'd fly with you anytime, Juan, knowing you'd be at the helm! Take care & keep these videos coming. Julie & Conrad
Wow, lots of information. I wonder why they haven't rebuilt the power plant at the forebay. Years ago at the Visitors Center they had a lot of information explained and with pictures. They also had videos you could watch. I sure miss that. Thank. you again Juan for taking the time out of your schedule and family time to give us all this information. It is so appreciated.
Thanks, Juan. Another presentation that would garner an "Outstanding" @ SOS, ACSC, and even the War College level. Ya know, if the spillway had not been such a dramatic breakdown, none of this history, of the guts of the dam, would have made it to the surface. She is an old dam, and people expect old things to fail. I guess for that reason there has been so much gloom and doom has gotten the traction it has. There are prophets of doom in abundance, but it is refreshing to hear and see the dam as you present her.The spillway will get another showing before this is all over, I just don't see a way around it. Thanks again for the excellent presentation!
I did the whole smash and finished up on the IG team. The last few years included seeing if bases could deal with mass disasters, not unlike the one you are presenting on. SOS did a great job in organizing thinking to present written and oral communications. It is good to see you have done so well, amigo!
Thank You, Juan, again for making videos which stick to the facts and truth. They keep me up on how and what progress is being made in the Oroville water situation. And when I don't get time to view your video on some days, RUclips has them available. Thank You Very Much !!!
Thank you Juan for your fine updates. And in this last update you confirmed the thought I'd already had and that's crisis never comes solitaire. I think that you guys gonna need a lot prayer to survive this years snowmelt and keeping the dam in one piece.
THANK YOU JUAN..!! It is refreshing to hear a highly intelligent description of all the facts from this emergency situation. I would be happy to fly on your 777s any day.!
14 Mar - watched all of your videos - excellent job - expected nothing less when you said you were a 777 pilot (I was a flight engineer, retired now). I look forward to watching more of this series as you dig deeper into the workings of the dam and the way it has been managed over the last 30 years or so. Especially interested in what is going to happen when the snow melt really picks up and they have to open that spillway - as I am sure everyone else is too. Again, great videos, looking forward to seeing more.....
WHY IS WATER INFLOW AND OUTFLOW LEVELS KEEP GOING OFF LINE??????? FREAKING EVERYONE OUT SERIOUSLY!!!!!! And those river valves look in really bad shape!!!!! glad you showed them I never knew about river valve system or about the fire or the accidents that have taken place at Oroville dam. thank you for keeping everyone posted on the latest dam news we all appreciate it!!!
Hi Juan , love your videos , I'm a dairy farmer from Michigan . A Found this Orville situation very interesting, definitely would be interested in hearing about your job and flying in the commercial world. Keep up the good work .
@blancolirio, These videos on the Oroville dam have been a very nice 'long format' set of updates. I appreciate the factual, not sensational, type of presentation. I hope you are able to keep it up.
juan, thank you for the straight forward information about the Oroville dam updates, though I live in eastern Pennsylvania it's interesting to know what is happening at oroville that the news media does not tell in depth what is taking place.
My water system experience, from Sonoma County service, and tells me that Mr. Brown's view of things with the Oroville Dam troubles is close to the truth. Juan has the quality to examine the details and speak those details with accuracy any thrift of words.
You have been doing a yeoman job with your videos, so much better and more informative than anything else on RUclips. Even better than the DWR. Why didn't they do maintenance and inspections during the drought, very poor decision making....
I have seen enough of your Oroville Dam videos now, to say this. If you were to piece/edit all of them together, it would make for a fantastic documentary! They are very well done Juan. Thank you again. I just caught up on your last two videos, and the one on Disclosure Media, and then found that I had missed this older one, somehow. So here I am. Even us Western Iowa Farmers, are very interested in this situation.
My ex father-in-law was a long hauler around the world flights for TWA back in the day. Late 60's - early 70's. Flew out of New York but lived in California and commuted as you do.
Juan, thank you yet again for a concise, accurate and depth of reporting - that 10:43 went by so quick I didn't even realize it was over until "Trouble" started playing. Keep up the great work, like many others, you are the "go to" guy for information :) Can I get an autographed pic? LOL :D - Mike
Juan, Thanks for covering the river valve outlet system! They sure fit the overall pattern of management through crisis. It reminds me of wildland fire fighting - not much effort toward fuel management and then federal dollars for each fire as if it were a war. You've sure sounded like the right man to fly the 777's - always a level head. Thanks for the good work.
The crazy thing to me, looking back on this 4 years later, is the fact that no one said, "Hey, possible fire in the river valve system versus possible dam failure, which one is more catastrophic?!"
Looks like a real nest of worms. Most of the UK hydro power plants are run by large power companies. So far there have been 'serious incidents' but the last deaths were in 1925. Sooner or later - who knows. The annoying things is hydro dams are the most profitable and cleanest way of generating electricity. I guess the shareholders of this dam will have to pull in their belts a bit. Once again this channel is the best and most honest reporting on Oroville in America. Than you so much.
Keep doing a great job....I own a construction firm here in Barbados and this incident fascinates me. Shaky Dolphin will do!
Aaaaand the tinfoil hat crowd shows up. Hi There!
I thought they were contrails, just moisture from the engines condensing at altitude?
Ask Juan to tell you how you bring in a beast like that with only one engine running. That's impressive. Nice job!
Juan, your coverage of the oroville dam has been OUTSTANDING !
The best coverage of the Oroville dam in the whole state of Cali, period!!!

Natedog2400 will do!
I'm assuming you fly out of SFO. Do you drive down for your flight or take your private plane to the area and get chauffeured?
commute on SWA to LAX

What a pleasure to read all these beautiful comments in favor of Juan. Right now he must be the most popular man in California.
The interest in your vlogs is directly attributable to their quality. Great job.

Wow! I would love to hear the eyewitness account!
Still the only REAL dependable report on Oroville. Thanks
Introduced to your channel by the great Oroville Dam coverage you have been providing. Also really enjoy the videos about your many other interests. I would love to see some videos on the 777. Thanks for taking us along!
You are my favorite go-to newsman for this situation - you put a lot of depth / backstory in your reporting and I appreciate it!
Thank you so much, Juan Browne !
Another illuminating report from something that most all of us living close to that big 900' tall dog wake up thinking about every day.. :)
Your great, detailed, unbiased, work is wow - world class - and so much appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time after all that airtime - how do you do it ?? :)
Best to you and your Familia for sharing you with us !
It takes a pilot to show the so-called news presenters how it's done. Good series. Thank you.
Thanks Kathryn. stay well.
I appreciate what you are doing Juan. I struggled to find information that made sense to me before I found you. Not surprised that you have got a large following.
California actually needs you to address D.C. because dude you have really been on top of this in a no nonsense,no bs, and true &honest way!
This is excellent information and I appreciate all the time you spend reporting on and updating everyone on. You do an awesome job.
Mike Davis
In 2021 since the hydro plant intakes are 100% in the air the River system is running now. Great Video... Nice to see the pictures
It seams the inflows at Oroville reservoir are going to increase soon, though... thanks!
Fascinating Juan.Keep them coming.I've watched bunch of your other vids as well, planes ,dirt bikes etc all excellent. Thanks again.Rob
Congrats Dan, You have over 5 million people that have viewed all your videos. Keep up the information on this Please.
Thank You
Wow, lots of information.
Jim Perry Thanks Jim! SOS (Squadron Officer School) was about as far as I got before heading for the airlines. I would have enjoyed the further PME.
I did the whole smash and finished up on the IG team. The last few years included seeing if bases could deal with mass disasters, not unlike the one you are presenting on. SOS did a great job in organizing thinking to present written and oral communications. It is good to see you have done so well, amigo!
Thank you Juan, you're videos are so informative. You've really done your homework and it's very much appreciated.
Thank You, Juan, again for making videos which stick to the facts and truth. They keep me up on how and what progress is being made in the Oroville water situation. And when I don't get time to view your video on some days, RUclips has them available. Thank You Very Much !!!
The best definition of "Crisis Management":
Got a crisis? Create a bigger crisis. Good work, Juan.
Thank you Juan for your fine updates. And in this last update you confirmed the thought I'd already had and that's crisis never comes solitaire.
I think that you guys gonna need a lot prayer to survive this years snowmelt and keeping the dam in one piece.
Well done,....I've enjoyed all your updates, keep up the good work. It's nice having reliable info on what's happening there...
You have the best Oroville dam updates by far! 'Most everyone else is indulging in speculation and fear-mongering.
Lynda Swanson I wonder if the damn things (level sensors) are solar powered, and the back up battery is shot...
Thanks again Juan - you have done a sterling job bringing info to us folks.
Hey thanks for the updates, your channel is by far the best for News on the Oroville Dam
Thank you as always. I feel like I don't have to spend hours looking for updates. I just look at yours and I'm kept well informed.
Hi Juan , love your videos , I'm a dairy farmer from Michigan . A
Found this Orville situation very interesting, definitely would be interested in hearing about your job and flying in the commercial world. Keep up the good work .
@blancolirio, These videos on the Oroville dam have been a very nice 'long format' set of updates. I appreciate the factual, not sensational, type of presentation. I hope you are able to keep it up.
Juan, Another very informative and honest presentation of the situation.
Thanks from Germany.
I've been watching your videos for almost a year, never knew you flew a 777.. that's so cool
Incredible information.........Sure is nice to listen to someone (YOU) that tells it like it is....Thank You
juan, thank you for the straight forward information about the Oroville dam updates, though I live in eastern Pennsylvania it's interesting to know what is happening at oroville that the news media does not tell in depth what is taking place.
These are the most informative videos of the Oroville dam on the net! Great job blancolirio
Thanks for the technical info. You're giving better coverage than anyone here.
Thanks Steve! good idea!
My ex father-in-law was a long hauler around the world flights for TWA back in the day. Late 60's - early 70's. Flew out of New York but lived in California and commuted as you do.
I'm from Australia, Juan, and I've watched all your videos. Thanks.
keep up the good work, you're the best one covering oroville
The only serious information. No guessing, no Conspiracy theory. Thank you from Germany.
Your a Natural journalist and reporter ! Msm has nothing on you. Thank you
Thank you for sharing your amazing video, I live in Denmark and find it interesting to follow your situation. God bless you and your family
Oh crap! Need to maintain equipment! Your updates are great, try to watch every day or two. Thank you.
It's been a pleasure to follow your informative and helpful videos.
I have enjoyed all of your videos regarding the dam. I hope you continue to add more vids of other subjects.
Very good job being a watchdog for the public, my hats off to you sir, a true patriot you are!!
