In 2011, when I was 17, I read his books and became soo occupied by savants and autism. Tammet was the main subject in my bigger school project back then. I even wrote him an email (and got an answer from what I remember). I also didn't have the opportunity to make a power point presentation like all the other students did, therefore I created old school like posters for my presentation and one of them was a drawing of his visualization of the first decimals of Pi, or at least my interpretation of it (: a colourful landscape. studying him and his world gave me many afternoons full of curiosity, inspiration, placidity. Autism still is really close to my heart, so is synesthesia. Thank you Daniel for that..kind of invitation to such magical corner of our human dimension.

You know you are listening to someone who is both very different and very special when they say, "a ginger root is the number 757 and makes me feel incredibly alone". For me, I can't even conceive how this combination occurs within a mind. It truly makes me think how esoteric and existential. You get some idea of the way his mind works just by listening to his speech pattern, it hardly ever changes cadence or expression. I really can't tell what emotions he is experiencing at any point, he just seems calm always. It's very interesting and frankly I could listen to him all day.

World-renowned neurologists tried and failed to understand how he can do what he does and how his brain works. He really is unique and much, much more than a memory athlete.

just to clarify there cannot be more connections in the brain than there are atoms in the universe because each axon and dendrite requires atoms. It is the number of patters / structures which can be generated with those connections, which outnumber the atoms.

Wow, now I know why when I learned music I used to associate it with Math. He associates different parts of his brain to get a larger bigger picture about numbers and colors etc.. Now I know I used to put notes and sounds with numbers and I enjoyed it. I used to create shapes in my mind with the sounds I produced , for me it was fun and easy. When I play music I already know what I am going to say, I color the music notes to use them according to the moment. And no, I was not using drugs or anything LOL..And.. It's so delightful to learn from Daniel.

would love to hear him answer these questions : 1. does he think that he will lose the ability one day to learn languages as easily as he does now, does he think that little kids have the plasticity, that allows them to learn languages, and he never lost it, that the young child's brain is connected across regions that is lost, and he has retained and 2. This got me going down a rabbit hole. You are correct, there are an estimated 10^20 connections in the brain and 10^80 atoms in the universe. But one way to state it correctly without changing the analogy much is there are more possible brain states than there are atoms in the universe.

Listening to Tammet suggests to me that the opposite might be true. That every thing in life for someone with autistm contains within it a wealth of emotional associations. Uhhhh yeah the chess makes sense because that is just intrinsic position of pieces, two dimensional permutation. But the physical connections of synapses in the brain are literally made up of atoms themselves ( 1 neuron containing approximately 3 hundred trillion 3 x 10^14 atoms), so it just intuitively doesn't click.
The number of possible connections that the neurons can make within a brain is larger than the number of atoms in the universe. It's a combinatorial thing and oftentimes worded wrong. I'm actually surprised that he worded it that way.

I don't agree that when learning a language, that one has to learn more faster to have a more basic fundamental understanding to proceed. I do though agree that he is partly right, but that also at the same time, it has to be done at a very certain level, so it is not overwhelming. Being able to find the right gradient to learn at. I think that is why schools are generally failing, because everybody gets to learn at the same rate, while not dealing with the most basic stuff.

I dont agree with the "condition" term. Who says that this is a "brain defect" . . What has just become a privilege... Evolution of intelligence is by chance and fault..by intent and the need for. For me it's the evolution of the brain..whatever the origin was...as his epilepsy would explain.. it's greater than that in my perspectives. It shows what the brain is capable of... So is Asperger. Ummm...no, I’m sorry. I need to see the numbers on how this could be true. I understand there would need to be a sampling and then estimation calculation applied to the KNOWN universe and same for the brain connection, perhaps. But to take this claim at face value? Thaaaaat’s a little too far out there for me to freely accept as likely.
