Thank you for this. I'm reading this play for pleasure and will admit that I'm struggling to keep the characters straight. This was super helpful. Thank you for doing it.

I learned late in life, but the only and best way to learn a play is to watch it. RUclips is a marvel. Then, reading it can refine my understanding.

I'm honored, but I've seen more than a few that are much better than this! Glad you found it helpful.

I think it s comedy when you look from villagers side, strong masters became miserable and u laugh something happens to ones you don't like. Its called tragedy because people want to look from masters side. rich people become poor is a sad story if you are rich. If you examine Great gatsby , it simply says with all your money and greatness you can never be one of us. True Blue!! Chekhov laughs true blue . thats why hero of this play says i am villager even i wear nice clothes , don't be fooled , i am the winner here on first scene

Of course, it's comical and very dark, time and again but I liked it, of course, I found Uncle Vanya better and next is 'Seagull', in fact, I intend to watch/listen all the plays by Chekhov, this time around when most of his short stories I have already gone through. I should not make any haste but I feel that Chekhov was a better short story writer than a playwright, If I may......

When I teach Chekhov in a class full of creative writers I usually do mention his short stories, but I wanted to keep this video lecture a bit more focused. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Thank you. I’ve read far more of these plays than I’ve seen and that means my pronunciation can be hit or miss.

That's a great one, and in fact my daughter and I were just talking about one of Amanda's monologues this morning, but no, I don't have a video on that one.

@@DennisGJerzSHU Wow! What did you talk about? Her "Malaria fever and jonquils" Monologues??? I have to perform this on Monday at East West Theater in LA. Love to hear your take on this.

@karinok She was talking about helping a student of hers recognize the multiple ways in which Amanda’s typewriter school monologue is manipulative. Break a leg in your performance! Come back and tell me how it went, if you like.
