Details Drive the News (2 of 2)

In part 2 of this lecture for entry-level journalism students, we begin with a acceptable but bland version of a story, trim the fat, and add more newsworthy and engaging details. Good journalists get the facts right, by the deadline; if they can also choose powerful words that engage the reader, then they're really demonstrating mastery of language.

In journalism, details drive the news. But don't let a stream of irrelevant details bury the news. This lecture for entry-level journalism students walks through several examples to illustrate how some common writing strategies that you may have mastered in your high school English or college composition classes differ from the writing strategies that will lead to good journalism.

    This analysis is full of generalizations that are inaccurate or misleading. @1:40 the provisional government was not the peasants, it was a mix of the old royalists (pro-war right-wingers) and some mensheviks (democratic socialists) and SR (socialist revolutionaries, a bourgeois party aligned with the bolsheviks and mensheviks). The workers with help from the soldiers deserting from the war front and some Cossacks who supported the bolsheviks did most of the overthrowing before October. Point is, for Chekov's backdrop, the Tsar and the rentier landed aristocracy was so badly loathed a total shambles of a coalition could take the aristocracy down even when right-wing proto-fascist nationalists tried to stop them.

    • @DennisGJerzSHU

      Thank you. To help students understand the context of the play, the main ideas I wanted to get across were that an 1) uprising took the aristocracy down, and 2) the peasants didn't wind up in control. In my attempts to boil a complex issue down into a few bullet points, I -- who profess no expertise in Russian history -- didn't do the topic justice.

    • @DennisGJerzSHU
      @DennisGJerzSHU 2 года назад

      Hello, I'm glad you found this helpful. I don't have any experience teaching high school, but I as a white person I learned a lot about the "Middle Passage" as an important cultural ritual. I'd say it's important to get young people to understand the difference between reading a script (that has to be interpreted by the creative choices of the director and actors, as well as costumers, lighting designers, etc), and watching someone else's interpretation. If there's an African history center in your area, or anyone with personal experience in the kinds of participatory, creative dramatizations of a shared cultural experience, that might be a starting point. As a Christian I grew up very familiar with Christmas nativity pageants and an in-church participatory dramatization of the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus, but those aren't really designed to create a *change* in the participants. So I think some discussion of what the detailed stage directions mean, and what impact the experience will have on the live audience as well as the characters on stage, would be appropriate.

    • @DennisGJerzSHU
      @DennisGJerzSHU 2 года назад

      That sounds rather like a homework question to me. What do you know about the politics of England at the time? What were some debates, controversies, discoveries, or problems Shakespeare’s contemporaries were facing (or ignoring) at the time? Where in the play do the characters face (or avoid, or at least talk about) similar issues?

    Was thornton trans? The idea of them only have TWO KIDS and they use to have two sons…. Until Cain hurt the brother and he because a she…. And the kid at the end being a doll…. Like she did not know she was trans.

    • @DennisGJerzSHU
      @DennisGJerzSHU 2 года назад

      Babies are unpredictable and noisy, so any time a baby appears in a live play we can expect it to be represented by a doll. I don't think the presence of a doll on stage is enough to read Gladys the way you suggest, but perhaps an individual director might want to cast it that way.

    • @steppjr
      @steppjr 2 года назад

      @@DennisGJerzSHU well obviously they can’t have a real baby on stage. But from a play inside a play point of view it could have double meaning. What is the thought of all the double talk about I use to have two sons? And now we have 1. And that she only had 2 kids? Is it suppose to be assumed the girl is adopted?

    • @DennisGJerzSHU
      @DennisGJerzSHU 2 года назад

      I think the most likely interpretation is that Gladys happened to show up the usual way, right around the time when Cain killed Abel, so the number of kids the Antrobuses have was still two, just not the same two. If you think of this play as Wilder's hopeful prediction that the human race will survive thanks to the resilience of the traditional family unit, then it makes the most sense for Gladys and her baby to have arrived the traditional way. A director who does a gender-blind and race-blind casting can turn any traditional play into a commentary about present-day values and relationships. If the point you want to make is that human civilization is going to continue via found families, made up of individuals who create their own identities and find each other, I don't see lines in "The Skin of Our Teeth" that support that idea. Because my professional focus is on the words written in the scripts, rather than what it's possible to do with those words in a production, then to explore "found family" I would not look at Skin, I'd instead look to "Rent" or "Into the Woods" or "In the Heights."

    • @steppjr

      Interesting….. I really don’t know much about theater and just saw this play last night and it hit really hard. After looking up the writer I found that he never married, was more than likely a member of the LGBQIA+ community and back in a time when it was not safe to be. The play made much more sense to me after I learned this. The crowd at the Theater was much older than the group I was with and it was an interesting perspective that most people there would not of understood.

Its called tragedy because people want to look from masters side. rich people become poor is a sad story if you are rich. If you examine Great gatsby , it simply says with all your money and greatness you can never be one of us. True Blue!! Chekhov laughs true blue . thats why hero of this play says i am villager even i wear nice clothes , don't be fooled , i am the winner here on first scene

    Thanks for this context and analysis. I first saw “The Skin of Our Teeth” about 30 years ago and was terribly confused, but also charmed by it. I recently read it, and the information that you share is really helpful in understanding what Wilder was trying to do.

      Thank you for your feedback. I just saw a live production for the first time a few days ago. There's always more to learn about a good play.

    Great discussion. I’m teaching Fences in a high school, and this is helpful for me to brainstorm some ideas to help my students wade into the text.
