Thank you for talking about Simone Biles, I'm in the gymnastics community so seeing it from an "outsiders" perspective is interesting! At the end of the day, Simone was dealing with the twisties, probably triggered by the insane amount of pressure she faces as the GOAT (and essentially the face of Team USA, USA Gymnastics, the Olympics, etc). The vault she did at team finals was SCARY and even though she landed it, it wasn't the correct vault (a 1.5 vs a 2.5 twist) and she was SO lost in the air. The reason why she landed so gracefully is because of her experience in the sport and her physical strength. I think a lot of people don't realize how scary it is to be lost in the air. The fact that Simone had the choice to back out and not risk injury AND not risk low scores (that could have led to no team medal at all) was huge for the sport and how it's progressed over the decades (i.e. Kerri Strug having to vault on a broken foot). She trusted her team to hit their routines and bring home a medal. Truly a team leader. I'm so happy mental health is being talked about for athletes. My gymnastics experience as a kid would have been so much more positive if the Simone Biles you see today was around back then. You guys rock, keep up the good work :)
i love how joe makes fun of d&d and says it’s weird and then IMMEDIATELY starts talking to frankie about walking through a dungeon like a dungeon master lmfao
D&D is so fun once my character fuckin made someone piss their pants and I got to roll for percentage of bladder emptied🤣 its creative man I feel like they would enjoy the roll playing
Joey is afraid to be a nerd. He makes fun of Frankie for collecting toys, but also wishes dragons were real. The man is an enigma. D&D is rad. He owns a Tony Stark Iron Man helmet. Played Yugi-oh. I used to be like Frankie and not like D&D and clown on people that played it. My friends ex was like," I don't get why you don't like it. It is literally theater without the stage." I have no idea why that changed my mind but it did. Now I watch actual plays.
Saying Simone was brave for prioritizing her health is not an overstatement, Joe. It might not be something that'll resonate with most people, but it certainly struck a chord with all gymnasts. The fact that this is coming from the top gymnast in the world is REALLY important and impactful. Most athletes are no strangers to career-ending; long-term; debilitating injuries that could’ve easily been avoided if they didn’t feel pressured to live up to someone else’s expectations. Everyone should read about the story of this Soviet gymnast called Elena Mukhina. For years she told her coach she didn’t felt safe performing a certain skill and for years she kept being ignored. She did end up having a bad fall on that very same skill and breaking her neck. She passed away years later, bc of complications from her quadriplegia, and yet the saddest part is that she said the first thought that came to her mind was: Thank God I won’t have to go to the Olympics now.”
I think admirable is a more appropriate word choice . I see Joe's point and yours as well, not saying she wasn't brave but think about it. Everyone's "brave" these days. It just starts to lessen the value of the word over time. I think that's the only point he's trying to make (I think). If we use different wording it would make the statement that much more impactful in praising her actions.
@@alexanotfromamazon Thank you Alexa! I do see what you're saying. But I'm not super picky with the word of choice. Call it brave, admirable, important, relevant, a conversation starter... It’s really about the fact there’s merit to what she did and it shouldn’t go unnoticed. I just tried to provide a little context for those who don’t follow gymnastics so closely or don’t know the story behind so many other athletes who had a worse fate than Simone (and could only wish they had a safe space to make a choice). I think Joe and Frankie already have a much better grasp (and empathy) for what happened here, but the more you know, the more you can unpack. I like that he also mentioned Kerri Strug’s vault in 96, bc the lack of context then really stirred the public’s perception. The fact is that Kerri didn’t have to vault. Mathematically the U.S had already clinched the gold. The coaches could’ve claimed ignorance, and say they acted in the heat of the moment, but it’s still their job to look at the scoreboard, do the math and strategize accordingly. Specially when someone’s well-being and safety are at stake. So… While most Americans saw her as a hero, to her negligent coaches she was basically deemed expendable. That was the end of her olympics and elite career. Considering that to this day that moment is perceived as one of the "greatest Olympic moments of all time” I don’t think she regrets doing that vault, but at the time it was happening, and she didn't know the impact it would have, her safety and choice were not granted to her. And that should be one of the take-aways from what Simone did.
I know i dont compare to Simone, but i quit my job of 19 years in a nursing home last week bc of the stress. I started out on the bottom at 21 years old and worked my way up to a dept head at 40. I was treated horribly from the other dept heads as well as the administrator for 2 years. Last Saturday i decided to quit. For my mental health.
i agree, i’m currently 21 so i don’t have as much work experience as you, but i was severely abused at my grocery store job i had been at for 3 years i recently had to give it up because of the toll it took on me. i cried almost everyday at that job and it takes a lot to make me cry. sometimes it’s just time to start over
Jacoby Miles actually went through the same thing as Biles, where she got the twisties in the air. Unlike Biles, who landed safely, Jacoby landed on her neck & got paralyzed. This happened in 2012
I heard several things online about Simone Biles. The topic you guys talked about and then an underlying reason why she pulled herself is because the judges would not score her as high as she deserved because she was just too fucking good. I was reading a bunch of people also sharing similar articles complaining that the Olympics was a joke because they didn't want other gymnasts to be disappointed because she scored better. Or maybe it actually was mental health. Either way, all the idiots saying that she is a disgrace to this country are all cro magnons. Thank you.
She talked about the reason about why she bowed out and how her body and mind were not in sync (twisties) And she mentioned a little while ago how she’s underscored because the tricks she does are way too hard (which is so dumb she should be scored correctly) but she didn’t bow out for that reason.

Marine here. I really appreciate Joe acknowledging the military like that @ 55:42 It's crazy how many of the guys I served with are just homeless now 4 YEARS after they got out. It gets worse for combat MOSs because it doesn't translate to the civilian world. Had a Captain tell me "You can do law enforcement and everyone will hate you by today's standard or you can be forgotten." It's amazing how everyone says they support the military but nobody does a damn thing to help. We are more focused on people who come to this country illegally than the ones who defend it.
Most of us joined out of highschool so when we get out after 4 to 8 years you missed a lot of the world if you were deploying to other countries. Then they tell you to go to college which is good advice, but you're very late, you haven't done basic education in 5 years. Your friends don't recognize you. You've done things you can't forget. You are a good product, but nobody needs you for that anymore.

Not to say that veterans should be at the top of the list but it's like we aren't even on it.
@@c4yourself319 lmfao 🤣
When Joe said "you've talked to buzz?!" I thought he meant buzz lightyear 🤣
the space talk had me crying laughing lmao
Monday is for the bois.
"OH CRAP WE GOT A BIG FAT PROBLEM ON OUR HANDS, OH CRAP, WE GOT A BIG FAT PROBLEM, HIDE"
JOE "Immediately dies"😂😂😂😂
Loved this episode!
Joe, please put the tree behind Frankie. There’s too much happening on your side

@@nayanpanchal39 oh is that why everything is over on joe’s side now?
It’s spelunking😂 had me thinking I’ve been saying it wrong ya fuck 😂😂😂
In terms of Insta being toxic, I don't know how but my insta is the most healthy, happy, peaceful place for me! It's all cute animal videos! I see nothing negative on there, and that, plus not consuming the news in any form, keeps my peace.
20:35 Joey and Frank I have news for you fellows, this is D&D. You just need to roll for perception or insight. I think someone other comment said this but this a total dungeon master move.
Plus, hunky Joe Maginello plays and has been playing since he was 13.
