In a recent Bible study class on the book of Hebrews, I gave this explanation of faith (WRT Heb. 11:1) : Suppose that your son or daughter calls you for a ride home. He or she now has faith that you will come and pick him/her up. Why? "Faith is the substance (underlying material) of things hoped for..." (Heb. 11:1) and Hope is a reasonable expectation of a positive future event. Hope = Ride Home = Reasonably expected positive future event. Faith underlies that hope: your child has faith that you will pick him up. That faith is supported by knowledge -- Your Child knows you will pick her up because she knows you. That knowledge is based on evidence: Past experience of your behavior ... and also on Relationship: As your child he or she can call on you when needed. When your child says, "Dad's coming to pick me up" that is not a pretense of knowing what she doesn't know. It's faith in the unseen (your arrival) based on what he knows (that you have always picked him up before). Your child walks by faith and not by sight.
As I was watching this video, I was thinking about how a wife may have faith that her husband would pick her up from church and I was thinking exactly along these lines. The child is a much clearer and more meaningful way to illustrate this idea. Neeto.

Atheists define the Christian faith as this: "Belief without evidence". But I'm trying to understand how they can say that there isn't enough evidence to warrant belief in God, yet they define faith as what I stated above.
S Gloobal Depends on the definition. I don’t believe god does or doesn’t exist. Have no position on that. So going by the definition of, ‘an atheist is someone who believes god doesn’t exist’, no I am not an atheist, but I’m also not a theist either.
Uncle Jesse well technically, TECHNICALLY, we are all "free" to think what we want....but only as far as the sin nature dictates. An atheist wouldn't buy that though!
I trust Christian Jesuits who fought foot binding, Indian slaving, Sati practising, truth seeking people. I trust the determination of Crusaders who left their riches to fight an invading and merciless opponent who was destroying everything relating to Christianity. I trust in miracles like Joan of Arc's, Francis of Assisi's, Mother Theresa's journeys. That's why I am a Christian and many many other reasons.
Doesn’t that mean you trust in human beings? Shouldn’t your faith be rooted in God? After all, the Crusaders did much harm. They killed Jews and Christians on top of Muslims because they couldn’t tell the difference (not saying I think it’s ok to kill Muslims who aren’t soldiers).

So respond to a perceived strawman make a strawman of the others position then give verses unrelated to biblical definition. Also then misunderstand strawman by claiming that giving a definition of blind faith means the person is describing your subjective definition of faith. So ya bad video look up some definitions and when making the biblical defiinition use the actual passages related to faith.
"The universe and the life contained within it bear all the hallmarks of intent thereby validating the consideration of an intentional causal impetus, defined as God, who is worthy of contemplation and worship there from." Prove me wrong?? Let the game begin.
Just to be clear on what your saying, you think the right thing to do, is use the present definition (defined in a dictionary from today) of a greek word from nearly 2000 years ago?
Tearren , yes, I don’t see a problem with that. We do it all the time. If we talk medicine people will assume the modern definition, not the ancient one. The most important thing though, when debating, is to agree on the terminology. Discussing faith when you don’t agree what it is is rather pointless. P.S. faith is not of Greek origin as far as I know.
BibleTalk101 , yes I did. However after rewatching I don’t think Dr. B’s tweet qualify as a straw man. He is simply saying “This is what I think faith is.” A straw man would be if A said “We must have faith” and B said “So you think we should follow blindly and not question”? But that’s is not what Dr B is doing here.
BibleTalk101 , for your second paragraph about my second sentence you lost me. How am I creating a straw man? I’m just saying claiming that it would be reasonable to use dictionary definitions when debating (as long as you don’t agree on another definition).

Excellent response to this popular atheist jargon. However, I would add that 'faith' is a way of knowing as well, in a sense. This is what Alvin Plantinga's book 'Warranted Christian Belief' (chapter 8) is all about: we have a cognitive faculty called faith, which was repaired by the internal instigation of the Holy Spirit upon regeneration. By the way, Plantinga is an epistemologist. Still, I admit Plantinga's usage of 'faith' there is a rather epistemologically technical term; the layman's usage of faith has more to do with trusting rather than knowing.
I've got Boghossian's book, and it was honestly hard not to burst out laughing every time I read his definition of faith. Is he honestly saying that every single religious person on the planet knows deep down that what we say we believe is nonsense, and we're just pretending? Or does he not know what the word "pretend" means? In any event, this video is an excellent response to what can only be described as nonsense.
First off, subbed. Second? It drives me a bit nuts when not just atheists, but some Christians still insist that faith has to be blind and that it's a sign of strength to do so. It seems that how we have faith in friends and family doesn't seem to connect for some people. Obviously, we don't just blindly have faith in our friends and family without some kind of evidence or reason, or whatever it is that's required. But it also doesn't help that the Google and other online dictionary supports the false definition.
The way I always think of faith is I have faith that my chair will hold my weight, due to the knowledge that it was designed to hold my weight, and the evidence that it has held my weight previously.
So Christians have faith that their God is real for what reasons then? There is no proof of his existence, there are no demonstrable things that would be unable to be done by anyone else that lead back to God and there is no evidence that he exists
So many people do this!! They try to change the definition of words to suit their own agenda in arguments. Like little kids changing the rules in already established games lol.
So, he says "Faith is trusting in what you have reason to believe is true" and "Christian faith is trust based on knowledge grounded in evidence". This surprised me because it's the complete opposite of what I've come to understand from Christians that I've discussed this with. I've always thought that a scientific fact is based on evidence, whereas faith is a belief held despite the lack of evidence. All Christians that I've discussed this with tell me that they have NO evidence that God exists, but that they have faith that he does.
you ether didnt discuss with christians anything and are lying or discussed once of few times with some really ignorant christians. Evidence is present in both science and religious belief, they arent defined by presence of absence of evidence. There are different types of evidence and scientific knowledge is different from philosophical knowledge and so is different from spiritual/religious knowledge. Evidence for god is plenty and evidence for christianity is plenty...thats why christians exist
@@KolyaUrtz There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of God. If there were, I would not be an atheist. Many religious people claim that such evidence exists, but their arguments always contain flaws, for example quoting the Bible to prove that the Bible is true or referring to the existence of the universe or animals as evidence of a divine maker etc. Read any serious book on philosophy and you'll see how such arguments all collapse under scrutiny. As for evidence to Christianity - why single out Christianity? Why not pick one of the other main religions? I'll tell you why. It's got nothing to do with whether Christianity is the one true religion; it's because you were raised as a Christian. Had you been born in Afghanistan, you would have been a Muslim, believing that Islam is the one true religion and that Christianity is rubbish. Think about it - the truth seems to depend on where you were born. Then think about it again - the truth should be independent of who or what you are.
Totally with you on this. Shows how important it is for Christians to understand their core terms Biblically, rather than believe the atheist propaganda version, too

Some people, even some Christians I’ve met, advocate blind faith. (I’m a Christian.) Mark Twain once said, “Faith is believing what you know ain’t so.” I can’t agree with Twain but it’s a popular idea.
Samuel Bishop Usually, when Christ rebuked the disciples for their lack of faith, they had already witnessed Him doing miracles. Still, after the resurrection they had a tough time believing He had risen from the dead. In their hesitation, they were reminded of what He had done.

That’s great! If you go to STR.org, there is a link on there to book a speaker. Hopefully this lockdown ends in Canada and I’m able to start traveling again.
Well done. I regularly watch youtube atheists and read their books for the same reason political conservatives ought to listen to NPR. I want to know the nuances of an incorrect world view in order to better free individuals from attachment to that view. I’ve been perplexed at how very popular and respected atheists have so many logical fallacies. Your videos do a great job of concisely and accessibly pointing out the fallacies with good humor and charm. Subscribed.
Well said, agreed, I do the same. Most Christians should.
Known thine enemy, as it were. The only way to truly confront or debunk the beliefs of others is to actually know what they think and even why they think it. That was my brother's reasoning for buying a copy of the Quran when he found out he was being deployed to Iraq & Afghanistan.
Hebrews 11:1-3 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (2) For by it men of old gained approval (3) By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out things which are visible. I think the 3rd line is pretty profound. What is seen is not made of what is visible? Discribes atomic structure? 2 Peter 3:10 &12 the elements will melt with fervent heat

As an agnostic person, I can tell only one thing that, I won't believe in God unless I lay my eyes on him, or he appears in front of me, to speak with me. I won't believe in anything that's written in these "old" scriptures.
But you believe other historical accounts just not the Bible.
@@flavorgod, no I don't.
You should rephrase your statement to 'I won't believe in any God or magical being...' There's literally thousands of them that people worship across the world, including some yet to be invented. Just a thought.
@@thatguywhocallsmebill5797, yeah many will be invented, maybe 100 years or 200 years later we might see arnold and ronnie Coleman being worshipped as gods of strength and muscle, or even bruce lee might be worshipped as God of martial arts ( he's already worshipped too much). All future gods might be modeled after today's celebrities. That's what we Indians made out of Lord krishna too, he was a very clever king of his time ( approximately during the iron age) with knowledge in politics and war strategies, but now he's worshipped as a God in our country, and I bet the offsprings from the lineage of people who hated him in his time now bow their heads in front of his temple, such is his influence.
@@mr.nobody7258 I think you might be right. Celebrity has been a big deal for a while now. Interesting about Krishna being worshipped as a Deity now, having been a King in the past. Take care my friend and thanks for keeping it real.

Atheists define the Christian faith as this: "Belief without evidence".
But I'm trying to understand how they can say that there isn't enough evidence to warrant belief in God, yet they define faith as what I stated above.
Good point!
What kind of evidence do you have? Please share.
Don't ask Red Pen. He says the gospel of John are eyewitness accounts. This can only be described as a lie.
S Gloobal That appears to be all from the New Testament. How do you know that’s reliable evidence?
S Gloobal Depends on the definition. I don’t believe god does or doesn’t exist. Have no position on that. So going by the definition of, ‘an atheist is someone who believes god doesn’t exist’, no I am not an atheist, but I’m also not a theist either.
Love the way he tore that tweet apart and fed it back to em 🔥😭

What on earth made you think that?!
@@rembrandt972ify because they always tell me that.

@@gigahorse1475 you make a good point ... All people ,no matter how great we are , are not worthy to even untie our lord's sandals , thats who we need to put our trust in
If your trust reaches no further than these, then a Christian is not what you are.
God? Jesus Christ? The Word?Just asking.🤔🤔🤔
Hey you're all right about it's wrong to believe in people and not Christ. But the point I wanted to make was that beside my love for Jesus and God I love my Christian history and want to be apart of it.
Short, sweet, and to the point!

Great video!
The word for faith is the original text is 'Pistis' please go look up Pistis instead of defending a strawman.
Really great content, also very well explained, on that point. Loving the Chunnel mate, keep at it.

Man, these videos are awesome! I love your sharp wit.
Fighting a straw man by creating another straw man. The right thing to do is to use the dictionary definition of faith.
This was so good!

@@TheInevitron I know, right? You online atheists are crazy...

@@TheInevitron Define believing. Define magical. Define insane. Define evidence. Define knowledge. Define sure. Define you.
Define a universe where the rational intelligibility of the said universe is possible by beings not intelligently designed but rather were produced randomly. Also, explain how a universe without a mind behind it produces information when information and randomness are literal opposites. Do you believe what you think and say are truly random?
Perhaps you don't realize all the baggage by means of presuppositions you bring to a conversation with theists. Given our worldview, the exchanging of ideas is possible. On your worldview, nothing is possible, yet here we are. I would say, since God is axiomatic, every single time you think, you become hypocritical. Romans 1:18-22

"It's not that I believe God doesn't exist, it's just that I don't believe he does exist."

Very good videos.
Thank you for your videos!
Very enjoyable channel.
I love your videos
First off, subbed. Second? It drives me a bit nuts when not just atheists, but some Christians still insist that faith has to be blind and that it's a sign of strength to do so. It seems that how we have faith in friends and family doesn't seem to connect for some people. Obviously, we don't just blindly have faith in our friends and family without some kind of evidence or reason, or whatever it is that's required. But it also doesn't help that the Google and other online dictionary supports the false definition.
great video

The way I always think of faith is I have faith that my chair will hold my weight, due to the knowledge that it was designed to hold my weight, and the evidence that it has held my weight previously.
So Christians have faith that their God is real for what reasons then? There is no proof of his existence, there are no demonstrable things that would be unable to be done by anyone else that lead back to God and there is no evidence that he exists
Beautiful stuff. Love it.
Thank you.

So many people do this!! They try to change the definition of words to suit their own agenda in arguments. Like little kids changing the rules in already established games lol.
Well said sir!
Thank you for walking in The Spirit and be able teach us these things. Eye opener. Heart opener. New subscriber

Some people, even some Christians I’ve met, advocate blind faith. (I’m a Christian.)
Mark Twain once said, “Faith is believing what you know ain’t so.” I can’t agree with Twain but it’s a popular idea.
The scriptures go against this quite clearly. "Prove all things" as it says.
Samuel Bishop
Usually, when Christ rebuked the disciples for their lack of faith, they had already witnessed Him doing miracles.
Still, after the resurrection they had a tough time believing He had risen from the dead.
In their hesitation, they were reminded of what He had done.
