the strangest of towns! - ruclips.net/video/uFht43WGE70/видео.htmlsi=CqNgeHz46C2upOZf
The steeplejack is looking down
upon his beloved town -
there's little left now, dear Fred,
but there's enough to make you weep.
There's that many boarded up shops there, the window cleaner's got a fu**in sander.
Very sad to see the decline in most of our towns and cities now
True
Because no one has any money to spend after paying their rent
Bolton in the 60's and 70's was one of Lancashire's finest market towns.
Once boundary's were moved and we became part of Gt Manchester the rot set in and 50 years later it's still a dumping ground and druggie paradise.
You innocently walked over at least 3 underground toilet locations....Nelson Square , the Market Hall and one that used to be next to a bank in the Town Hall Square....
History can be both amazing and sad 😢
If Bolton was still part of Lancashire the decline would have been inevitable.
And yes I live in a part of Northern Manchester that was part of Lancashire.
The decline witnessed in almost all Northern "satellite" towns was coming.
Local authorities are plain and simple inept plus successive governments that don't give a doss about the North.
What happened to Bolton? I used to live near there as a kid, 20 years ago, it wasn't the prettiest and had its quota of chavs but it was still a buzzing place to hang out. Thanks for this video, shows how time, and maybe demographics, always change.
I still think it is an ok town to hang out....but it has changed abit for the worse. Shame as it was bangin in the day!
I moved to Bolton 18 years ago and it was pretty great back then, but the speed at which it’s slid downhill into being the decrepit shadow of its former self is harrowing. The food and drink festival every year is the best in the country, but aside that they need to think about making rents lower and parking free, otherwise everyone will just go to Middlebrook Retail Park, which has all the big names of shops and restaurants, plus a cinema, transport links, bowling, and free parking.
If it's any consolation it's the same decline as everywhere else
It's still a good night out at the weekend but poor for shopping. That big building at 6.30 was Marks and Spencer who have now left the town centre.Middle class types who shopped there are now travelling to Bury or Chorley.Smaller towns with better shopping.
There are no more 'centres' because that is where people used to interact, freely communicate and get closer than 2 metres, just saying
Looks like The Smiths video when Morrissey is walking round a boarded up Salford estate. Kin ell.
They need to make the centre smaller. Maybe they should try what Barcelona did. Level an entire block and replace it with a park with a bandstand in the middle. Gives people something worth going to that’s not a shop.
Not a bad idea that. Do need to visit Barcelona!
Sorry but yet can't polish a turd...like all over we R now sitting back n watching r great country turning into islam
Same tale as many towns..i used to have nights out there in late 90s, it was really decent
Yeh i still think a night out there looks top!
Used to go to Bolton’s Water Place very often as a kid. Shame that got shut down
What was that?
@@honestplaces Just a water park with Rubber Dinghy Rapids, Bro!
@@Chrisallengallery i thought that.....just wanted to make sure 🤣
If you can look past some boarded up buildings, it's great night out, probably busier last weekend of the month like most places, the town hall and crescent behind it is some great architecture, used constantly for filming itv dramas.
It has, like many towns in the Midlands, suffered 'white flight'.
Had to stop in Bolton on Thursday last week - see some fella try to fight a pigeon at about 11.30..
All of a sudden, I felt the need to go back to the train station.
elephant and castle is a nice pub fairly quiet but food is good and drinks are good for the price
Can't beat decent prices!
Such a shame, but it’s just like the rest of the towns up and down the UK. Used to go to college in Bolton, there used to be some smashing pub and clubs in the 90s and the shops were good too.
Yet the price of houses in the North West of England are strong!
Council Town parking charges didn't help high street health. And did little to reduce parking congestion either. Cost more in fees to nip to my local town than the stuff I was buying. So I eventually got out of the habit of going.
Same in alot of places
This like many towns in the U.K. is due to Car parking charges .. over zealous. Parking wardens .. internet shopping
Brain dead councils
Sad to hear this, one of my great grandfathers was from Bolton. Six degrees of separation.😂
That was good when you said the elephant & Castle in there on a Saturday watch United get batterd as usual
Not on Sunday though! 👍
I prefer it when ya going pub and have beer, but I understand you like to check out the towns and city and there heritage.
Trying to take it easy
Out of town retail had a massive effect, especially the Middlebrook one at Horwich. The centre now, is too spread out. Needs concentrating in a smaller area.
The old fine buildings are due to wealth of the former textile industry which Bolton was built on.
It’s our strength.
That’s like paisley in close proximity to Glasgow but full of former industrial decline & cheaper rents and rates & properties to buy it’s just gotten worse & worse even the McDonald’s in the high st shut down 😢
Glasgow not much better 😮town fulla shut up shops, pubs, clubs, restaurants.
Why the fk come to a place e to screw the reputation. Despite closed buildings, this has to happen for future development which has now been assigned. Bet you don't come back then, when it's happened though will ya???
Nah
The Balmoral before the smoking ban, you'd be hard push to find a busier pub.
Since it’s been a dumping ground for asylum seekers, the town is ruined
typical racist nonsense. asylum seekers didnt create record high prices for gas, electricity, council tax, food, petrol and diesel. thats what ruined the town centre-people cant afford to go out and spend money as often as they used to do.
@@user-te1hi9rx7bright!! Most just want to work & rebuild their lives.. the crack users are the problem
Walk into Grimsby town centre. Magazine shop closed which is your starter. Poundland closed. Main menu. Entry into shopping centre everything closed. Seriously that town is dead.
Bad that 🤣
Pound stretcher has moved to a new building, not closed.
Come to Suffolk bro. I’ll shout you a pint 🍺
Ironically The Market Hall, which, when refurbished, everyone kicked off about, is actually the nicest part of the town these days.
The humongous space behind you at the beginning used to be the college where I went. Fucking great times they were.
The town I used to be so proud of is an absolute travesty now. It's too far gone to be rescued either
Market hall is decent! Did you enjoy the nightlife?
@@honestplaces I did! Although I was always into alternative music so I never liked the bradshawgate scene. Back in the day, I went to The Alma (behind you at 0:24), what used to be The Varsity (to your left at 06:16), Dog & Partridge (RIP, used to be near 2:02), Kico (used to be behind you at 4:19) and then Hawthorns (closest you got was 2:38, but it was out of town). We're talking like 20 years ago now, but I had some amazing times in Bolton after hours :D
@@hdng1984 that alma looks sick! That hawthorns looks abit more upper class. Deffo not short of places to go!
I once won a holiday to bolton it was great😅
When?
I'm a Leeds lad, I do enjoy your travels! I live in Amsterdam now, when are you coming here?
Cheers pal.....amsterdam seems too expensive for me 😭
Looks like most places in Britain is THE WAY OUT.
Very sad 😞
Depends where you go of course!
Looks like Bolton Wanderers weren’t the only thing that went downhill in the past 2 decades. Sad really.
Lot of non natives in that market thought you had stepped thru a worm hole and reappeared in Mumbai for a minute there.
love you go st Helens mate you would enter and look for the quickest exit out of there
If we think about it its an absolute disgrace that there are any boarded up buildings in any high street anywhere ! 😮
Should be turned into community centres or temporary housing for the homeless no excuse for boarded up buildings
My son lives there
Good video but can't believe you walked past the 3rd oldest pub in England and never said a word 😭🙏🍺
I wanna know your opinions on the new renovation of Barnsley Town Centre
Never been to Bolton but it looks massive more a City than a Town
Its that bad, even the ethnics dream of being back in pakistan
Brilliant 🏴🇬🇧
I've never been and i'm not in a rush to. But i guess people from there have plenty to enjoy.
It wasn't too bad. I'd deffo go there for beers 🍺
You could do Salford next. The quays and there has been massive development on Chaple street.@@honestplaces
Pre 2000 Bolton was heaving, every shop was open, the markets were packed and lots of pubs. Used to cue up for an hour just to get into the nightclubs.
@@siKnowleschannel69 yeh i heard that! Was the place to be!
A lot of these empty old buildings could be set a up with camp beds on the floors with a soup kitchen on hand , we could house the migrants in them .Then the hotels that are been used for migrants could be used for the genuine Uk homeless
Of all the northern provincial towns that you’ve documented, which are the top 5 in your opinion?
Good question.....probs Bolton 👍
That's my town. It was actually even worse 3/4 years ago
Sad. The state of the place. Doesn't anyone care - some of the architecture is nice, obviously from a bygone and better time. Depressing to see the decay in England. Does the government not invest in its towns and cities any more. Nice that it has got the old cobblestones; could still be a nice place if some money was spent. Church is nice and I hope it is still used. Later parts of the video looked a bit better.
7:15 lol
Even in the 70s you had to wipe your feet after leaving most of the pubs what a hole.
I wish the king would get his money out and give it a start again.how is that ever going to get better, sad,,
When was it ever on the up? 😂
Bolton is Sad , grim and almost dead .
No wonder Peter kay pissed off 😂
England looks really bad :(
mmm........... for some strange reason, bolton house prices are the highest ever in uk history ?
Blue building is a pool
Same all over the country... These empty shops should be converted into refugee's housing ❤
Really?
Living in the UK must be like living in a gulag 💀💀💀
The Jewk
@@robwood8331 Take off the k and you’ve just named your problem 😉
Best place around Bolton always filming tv series peaky blinders always being filmed here and all the top series

Do a night walk , if your frightened i can help
Too scared
To funny, ha ha ha.
decline just happened to co-incide with brexit... but the tools who voted for it thought they knew better.
A puerile comment.
UK became a proper shithole long before Brexit
So Brexit is going well then…..
We never really got brexit, in name only
@@Danny-qq5nr You have gotten everything you wanted for the past 14 years and it’s all rubbish. It’s almost like the enormous fade haircut and regional accent mob are thick.

Pre Brexit- good. Post Brexit- looks like Ruzzia...
Pre Brexit overrun with foreign hordes, post Brexit even more.
We love the foreign workers here in Prague- from Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, the Baltic's, Moldova... who all came back to Europe after Brexit, and those who no longer go to the Uk after Brexit, and come here instead. We need the workers...@@bushwhackeddos.2703
No it's much better these days remember going here 5 years ago on a Friday it was a ghost town and every other shop was boarded up now only a few. I've seen towns that are in much worse shape
High street is finished.... nothing to do with Brexit it's called the internet.
Cultural enrichment and woke weak leaders to blame.
