- The great CHANNEL 4 REBRAND of 2023 has begun...
Announced in the November of 2022, we're starting to see the various branches of the C4 portfolio change their branding to encompass the overall 'Channel 4' brand. ALL4, the streaming service that boasts tons of C4 content for free, seems to be the first to undergo this change, becoming simply... Channel 4...
But why is this happening? Why now? How will the various C4 TV channels undergo this change?

I could see the rebrand of channels going the way of something like Channel 4, Channel 4 Comedy, Channel 4 Movies etc, much in the same way Sky have done over the years. That’s pure guesswork of course, but if they want Channel 4 to be the main brand across the board then that would appear to make the most sense. Personally, I’d have left things as they were, but we’ll see how it all plays out.

I assume it will go like this:
E4 - Channel 4 Entertainment
More4 - Channel 4 More (or something a bit better)
47 - Channel 47
etc..
More Channel 4
On the EPG's I'm guessing the names might be shortened to fit like "C4 Ents" maybe.
I think the rebranding might be a nightmare for the announcers and especially for trails, I mean say "On Channel 4 & on Channel 4"??
No. It won't. They are planning on having it actually go like this:
E4 - "Channel 4 2"
More4 - "Channel 4 3"
Film4 - "Channel 4 4"
E4 Extra - "Channel 4 5"
4Music - "Channel 4 6"
4seven - "Channel 4 7"

It makes sense to me. Channel 4 is a strong brand but they need to futureproof it. If fewer people are going to be watching the actual channel, then the brand risks losing its impact over time. This seems like a sensible solution.

All4 was a perfect name. Channel 4 implies it’s just the main Channel 4 and nothing else, and that it’s live TV online instead of on demand. This rebrand is not only pointless but it causes confusion.

Channel 4 is getting ahead of the game in unifying it’s branding. Traditional broadcasting is dying so the need to have unique branding between channels isn’t necessary.

To still offer 480p on live TV on a streaming service app is not reasonable through, They should at least be in HD.

I'm surprised to hear this. I was equally surprised to see, just recently, BBC Midlands in HD on Sky 101, after years of switching from 115 because the caption appeared "we cannot yet broadcast in HD in your area..." .
Now we see Midlands Today in glorious HD

As always Adam, another top notch presentation. I don’t know any other RUclips channel that puts as much work and effort into every video as you! Especially considering you’re a one man show!
I got an ad for the Channel 4 streaming service before this video 😳🤨.
I think the Channel 4 brand identity has lost its way a little bit unfortunately. The traditional 1982 logo has its place and is almost unchangeable, but was totally underwhelmed by the 40 years celebration of Channel 4, 25 year celebration was so much stronger. I think the presentation department could be a lot stronger in attention to detail and be more original. Maybe all the doubts about its ownership and relocation of HQ to Leeds going hot then cold has distracted channel management away from its core identity. Also did the late 2021 play out suite fire at red bee media cause lasting havoc. Even the subtitles today are in an old typeset. Was reading an article from RXtv info which seems to indicate that it was the delay in getting together the Freesat hd 104 slot nationally after the relationship breakdown with Freesat was resolved.
I saw the change on my Samsung TV, so now I know the rebrand is imminent for all C4 channels!
4:09 I feel like ITVX is a decent name for a streaming app, you’ve got ITV1/2/3/4, but in computer programming, X is like a variable value you assign (like x = Hello World , print(x) in Python). Honestly, It absolutely makes sense, ITV follows numerical order for their broadcast channels, the streaming service would be like a one stop shop for all their content and X can take any value (in coding😂).
It's actually because the + has been used alot so the turned it around and BOOM! It's a X!

I’m so old, I still call it 4OD.
It's rebranded itself recently as simply Channel 4 on my Sharp smart TV!
It seems very clunky to me, especially for live shows, eg The Last Leg, Steph's Packed Lunch etc, as the presenters have often said, "if you missed any this show here on Channel 4 you can catch up on All4". Whereas now, they'll be saying, "if you missed any of this show here on Channel 4 you can catch up on Channel 4"... ?!?
Seems like someone suggested a rebrand in order to make a job for themselves, but that's probably me being a little cynical.
It does make me wonder if the channel rebranding that's still to come will include tacking a word or short phrase onto the end of the main channel's name to make it something like 'channel 4 main event' or 'channel 4 fanfare', or even just 'channel 4 live' in the sense of watching the company's main schedule live as it's broadcast, rather than meaning the shows themselves are never being pre-recorded. So if it's the latter it'd become something like 'if you missed any of this show here on Channel 4 live, you can catch up over on Channel 4'.
In one of the adverts they said ‘If you missed yesterday’s show you can watch it on the Channel 4 streaming service.’
The rebrand is just the beginning. There are more changes coming to the apps soon. I'm not sure what the changes will be exactly but I'm part of a consumer research group where we're set weekly tasks in which we're instructed to use certain features of Channel 4 apps (and sometimes competing streaming services too) and then we give feedback about which aspects we think are good or bad.
i'm honestly impressed with how clean the C4 logo is. you would think it would look cluttered, but no.
I've just noticed in the last couple of days they've started doing programme promos announcing streaming on channel 4 then when it's on linear TV by saying for example "xx on channel 4. Stream weekly or Watch live Friday at 8"
I'm not a fan of that wording, announcing every program as "watch live" makes it sound like it's being broadcast live when it's just on the linear channel as usual. I don't understand the point.
They also seem to be using the E4 branding for the streaming service as well, I've heard promos saying "x on E4, Stream all episodes now or watch live sundays at 9" without any mention of "channel 4" at all - assuming this'll change over time but just a bit convoluted and confusing atm.
The linear channels will apparently keep their names, but CHANNEL 4 will be the main heading, with in brackets below for example CHANNEL 4 (E4) and also in the bracket a slogan for that channel. Which seems pathetic to me and not needed.
The other ITV channels will also getting a rebrand after the latest one next month.
@johnking5174 exactly, like I could just imagine how awful the names will become. Like instead of Film4 we end up with Channel 4 Film or something. I don't know why companies think everything has to be linear.

What about something like “Channel E4”
I think the All4 works in the current world where linear and OD TV work alongside one another. When linear TV is eventually retired, and having channel names makes no sense for a fully online channel, then they can make it all Channel4. I'd say that if I'm referring to watching something linear I'll say the channel name (E4, Film4, More4, Channel4 etc.) and then if I'm not watching it live I'd say it's on All4 not the individual channels.

I think the fact you can catch up on shows by watching on demand is such a part of modern viewing, there’s no need to differentiate. It’s a bit like when VCRs or DVRs were popular, we didn’t need to differentiate a programs that was recorded with a different brand or keep reminding people, “you can set your VCR to record it using something we like to call 4-Rewind”. We just understood they were a channel 4 show that was recorded. Branding like iPlayer and saying you can catch up on iPlayer is just a transitional thing, while people get used to the fact there’s generally an On Demand service for all channels. It’s a bit like the term ‘mobile phone’ as landline phones are no longer seen as the norm, having ‘mobile’ in the name seems a bit redundant.
I think that there are many folks who use the online viewing platforms in the same way that we used to use the VCR to time shift the viewing of programmes.
I mean, it makes marketing sense. Channel 4 is the main "brand" of the corporation, so it makes sense that it's at the centre of all of Channel 4's sister channels.
This is why ITV should’ve kept the main channel name as ITV. Exactly the same reason. Everything ITV should be focused on that channel and their content hub service which should also be ITV. I get what Channel 4 are doing, but they do need to keep the channel names - but Channel 4 for the streaming service works great

with sky nowerdays you can speak into the remote and it will take you to your channel or streaming app you want i dont see how that will work now
Rather than rebranding, they should spend some money fixing their streaming service because at the moment it is a joke. They should also create an app rather than trying to rely on chrome cast which they have implemented very badly.

The channel opened 24 years ago (!) but the production company made films and dramas broadcast back in 1982-3 that I remember fondly to this day.

I'm intrigued to see what is happening with E4, More 4, etc. Do we even need More 4? What's the point of it? It's mission statement was nebulous when it started, now I think of it as the 'Come Dine With Me' channel. I don't even check its schedules.
All that said, Channel Four is still so successful that the Tories couldn't justify selling it off. So they're doing something right

This is why ITV should have kept their channel name as ITV as everyone calls it. ITV should’ve kept it as ITV. Not ITV1
This rebrand makes more sense giving that they want to unify all Channel 4 services under single roof. However, it looks like BBC Chameleon-style rebranding happen again.
All4 was always too close to ’all fours’ for me. “Watch now on All4” would make me giggle every time.

I think the rebranding makes sense. I rarely watch live TV these days and think of the app as "Channel 4" already.
Did you review the new BBC News channel merger that came out a few weeks ago on April 3rd yet? You said you would go over how the merged BBC News/World News channel works after when the two channels in one merger was completed on that date
I hadn't realised it's been eight years since 4OD has been retired. I still search for 4OD to get to Channel 4 on demand (the name just flows logically for me - what do I want, I want 4 OD!) and google still connects me so I've never needed to think about it. It almost demonstrates the brand is not important here, we'll find our way.

I cut my teeth in broadcasting but being an Ingest Op at a Playout Centre. I was made redundant in 2020 due to a slow demise of Linear Television. I know have a good foothold in the Online Streaming world, but still consider myself to be in Broadcasting. A lot is changing for sure; streaming and VOD is the way things are. As for myself; when it comes to watching Linear TV; if I get in from work, I might stick a Traffic Cops repeat on or maybe something like Food Unwrapped as background, and sit in an armchair for half an hour after work.
Another day, another rebrand. Must have taken lots of high level meetings to come up with channel 4 name for it 😂. Preferred 4ODname, All4 just sounded like "awful". Talking of which, it is, just far too many ads make it unwatchable. Not gonna pay for it like I do Itv as only programme I ever watched was Gogglebox. But good luck to them!
I really don't want them to change the Idents just because the current ones with the giant are shot locally to me! Will forever cheer when New Brighton is shown on national telly

I think this is Channel 4 hinting at the eventual death of linear TV. Or at least TV over anything than IP. Sky Glass and Stream hints at Sky/Comcast eventually exiting the Astra satellites, more and more of the UHF band is being taken from Freeview and handed over to 5G (and possibly 6G)
I have a feeling that TV will move to over the internet only, especially with Freesat and Freeview now under common ownership. You might see them become one service - Freestream.

I think it's pretty obvious how the channels will look on the TV guide. Channel 4 Films, Channel 4 Music, Channel 4 Comedy, Channel 4 More, etc. It's a play on words
They still have the tall Chanel 4 robots and the different colour new idents so it’s old and new which I thought they just used the new idents.

Eventually all of the other Channel 4 brands will become Channel 4 and then have a somewhat generic tagline attached to them ex. Channel 4: Drama. Similar to the way steaming content libraries divide content up in to categories.

They can't do that, Channel 4 is in public ownership. It's currently self financing, when is why Mad Nad couldn't flog it off, but it doesn't have to provide a dividend to shareholders, so as long as they continue to be profitable, there's no incentive to rock the boat with subs.
Whereas as Sky, for example, has to have subs, ads, sponsorship, pay per view, etc to placate the greed of the

This makes sense if Channel 4's long term strategy is similar to the BBC's - switch off linear TV channels and stream everything. At that point you only need one front door.... Channel 4.
My one gripe with Channel 4 (All Four as was), it’s as I use my iPhone and cast to my television. Is it Chromecast.
I like all the other streaming services, Channel 4 does not support subtitles in that particular instance. I have asked them several times why, I’d hoped that they might incorporate subtitles.
But as most people now have smart TVs, I reckon it’s not a priority for them.
I can watch with subtitles on my iMac , but I don’t have such a comfortable seat to sit in front of it, as I do for my television!

They've been pressured into doing it. Especially pushing the live shows. Previously you didn't need a TV licence for All4 now though you need a TV licence to use it.
itvx does sound like an adult website. Saying it in an exasperated voice doesn't change that.
So the confusion comes from the company wanting it name to be use for the overall brand like the BBC and not just for a specific traditional TV channel. To differentiate BBC channels when new ones were added they each got a number, BBC becoming BBC 1 when BBC 2 was added. ITV has done the same. So Channel 4 needs to add something to it's original TV channel name. Will it become Channel 4UK for example?

Given the way the BBC changed their radio i-player name to 'Sounds' i expect them to rebrand their TV i-player to 'Pictures' any day now! (Not that my aged Sony Bravia can access any of these streaming services.)
BBC iplayer honestly does sound really outdated. Maybe they will just call it BBC soon. Channel 4 does sound really simple, but i actually don't mind it. It shows its all content from channel 4. The other names were just used because that's how TV worked.

I said this before, but 4oD means nothing to me, and I don't know anyone who remembers it fondly, and the notion that others do is baffling. To me it is and always was a limp and silly name, much like ITVX, which I feel would be a better fit for ITV2 than for streaming. All4 was much stronger, and that's "what it will always be for me".

I wouldn't be at all surprised if My5 went the same way. 2027 is coming and it's potential big changes to the lisence fee. A super "britbox" may be on the horizon, one incorporating all 5 brands on a combined sub & ads model.

I've never used All4, must have been 2014 when I last used 4OD.
Still til this day I just called them, channel 1, 2 ,3 ,4 and 5... No matter what they brand the torrential channels this is what they are known as to me. It's very rare I say 'put on BBC' or 'put on ITV"

This makes sense to me - one name for the channel and streaming. Plus on a sidenote, can channels please stop repeating the streaming service after every program advert? One of the worst is Channel 5 - it's so repetitive.

One of the main TV networks here in Finland, mtv3 (not related to the global MTV) did something similar when they rebranded their streaming service from mtv Katsomo ("grandstand") to simply mtv in 2018. Last year, they brought the old name back, since market research showed basically everyone was still referring to it by the old name.

The new indents would be cool if they were a big group of people making up each 4, Channel 4 (the terrestrial TV channel, see, already I'm having to explain which one I mean, whereas if they kept All 4 I wouldn't have to explain which Channel 4 I'm talking about) a variety of every day people in offices, shops etc, E4 made up of young adults, drinking in a bar or studying, typical young people things, 4Music people in a nightclub, kinda like BBC One's a few years back where they were doing the activities, stopped to look at the camera then carry on, only on a larger scale and instead of just looking at the camera, making a formation and a shot from above looking down at the 4.
Another app that will probably die on my smart TV I guess. It's a 2013 model and when they launched UKTV play it didn't get a rollout because I guess my TV is on an older OS so it was only coded for new TV's, fair enough, it wasn't on the TV when I bought it so I didn't lose anything but when ITVX was launched my TV updated to remove the old ITV player app aaaannd........didn't replace it with the new one, so now I've lost ITV catchup services. If they do the same with the ALL4 app I'll have lost half the catchup services that were on the TV when I bought it.
