I totally agree. I often watch great drummers like Jeff Hamilton, Peter Erskine, Carl Allen and so many others discuss playing the ride and I am just thinking “what ?? ...NO way !!! Are you listening?” I can’t say that a free, rebound technique is “wrong” but to me... just like you said... if you listen, and memorize the sound, you body will do what it takes to get the “right sound”. Ed Soph said in a brush video here on RUclips... guys always ask about the pattern I’m playing... he says, forget that... “Go for the sound... not the pattern”. It’s the same here, IMO. Maybe I misunderstand what these greats are talking about, but I’m with you. Really listen👂
