My guitar professor always said, "there are a certain type of player that can play those super fast technical lines, we call those people saxophonists"
Damn, so good from both of you. When your student plays, I’m like “Well shit, how is Dave going to top that?” Then you play and show us the teacher you are. Even though I know that’s not what these are videos about, you never fail to impress me man.
Wow, thanks so much - I really appreciate that. We were both just letting go on this one - sometimes the emotion just has to be the main focus! Once again thanks for that!
dude i didnt even know that tunes had a form one year ago. Playing at jams everyday at highschool and at club jams you'll be surprised how much you can learn. Of course practice for hours at home, but playing with others is critical too!
Wow.. I am so inspired right now. I was actually randomly browsing beginner alt sax tutorials because after years of listening to saxophone players (I play guitar myself, decent grasp on intermediate theory) it hit me: I should perhaps just pick up a damn sax and start taking lessons! It just speaks to me so much, and this video tipped me over the edge! The way it resembles a voice, the almost spiritual energy (Coltrane influences heh), just the amount of creativity there is in coloring these notes and runs, ugh. I am not sure how attainable the level of play that young man is showing here is in my life, but I am sure as hell going to damn try!
The music is incredible, but being able to see the reactions of the master teacher and his star pupil is priceless. They, at this moment in time, are spiritual soul mates, locked in a rare groove, that doesn't happen everyday. What a nice experience for us listeners who can understand a bit of what is going on. Thanks...keep at it!
i love how he just lost himself in the music. it’s such a beautiful thing to see a person with such a great talent have such passion. losing yourself in music is the thing that helps keep our sanity. i love this!
100% for Teacher and student - each. Dave, I adore ❤️ your approach to developing an improv. Solo: slowly you build up to a climax, as you have expertly done with Jamie and the other sax experts during the performance of "Caravan". Your student is stepping excellently 👍 and deliberately in your footsteps, as expected. That's great. Thanks, Dave.
If that’s your student he speaks well for both of you. He plays well and you can just straight up PLAY. I’m sure you’re both proud of each other. It shows!
Your student and Austin Zhang should collab and jam out sometime.. both of them are straight up fire. I'm assuming you know who Austin Zhang is, he is from Texas both around the same age.
I have been working so hard this year to get that sound on my solos. I have been working on the approach note technique a lot. I feel like I am getting it a little bit, but also feel stuck. I just wish I understood. This video and the blues one really inspire me! Keep up the good work
Mannnnn your diatonic playing is amazing Dave!! I've been trying to get that down forever....and this kid is just unreal! Can't wait to see what school he goes to!
Dude, Im late but this is phenomenal! I hope I can get this good in a few years, but that would take a lot of practice! Inspirational playing from the both of you
4:16 - 5:00 can you please explain what were you thinking about? Did you get that sound by playing scales (if yes, which ones) or focusing on alterations (also, which ones)? Thanks in advance 😃
Hey - I was using the harmonic minor scale throughout there (D harmonic minor over D minor and Eb harmonic minor over Eb minor). I did some other stuff, but the main sound was harmonic minor.
Wow, nice job guys. What kind of musical devices are you using when you're ripping through those outside sounding passages (like the section starting around 2:25)?
I'm going to start calling you two Dave "Do It Right" and Simon "Says"!!! Talk about killing it... drag it back to the cave and roasting it! Smokey as a Pyro barbiqueing Mesquite ribs on a Diesel grill!
Thanks! Not sure how many others are at his level (or will get to) - he's pretty unique in that sense! I taught him since he was in 5th grade, but he already was playing for a little bit before that.
Thanks! It’s kind of neither- I show the basics of melody and harmony, focusing on creating leading tones and melodic ideas that smooth work over tunes. Then help the students create their own different harmonic and rhythmic sounds and show them how to build their own vocabulary based on sounds they like and hear in their own heads.
Dave Pollack hey, why not do videos on this very process?😳..........or create a few specialized downloadable videos, I would be the first to buy it! Seriously!👊🏾😎 be the first to put something really useful instead of the others!
Check out my other video where Simon absolutely DESTROYS a fast blues! ruclips.net/video/8PAX1QcMdnQ/видео.html

Would have laughed harder If you didn't have to say my man's like all the rest of the 20 year olds.
A talented student + a talented teacher = this video.
Thank you so much! Really appreciate that.
John Gibson, It’s not talent, it’s pure passion and hard work.
@@ThinkCreativeIy How about: it's pure passion, hard work, and talent?
@@JohnPaulWilliam thats about right
John Gibson talent wont get you to that level of playing , only hard work and passion
This kid needs some gigs. Absolutely killer playing
First 3 mins of hearing this.
Me: goes back into the practice room for 4 hours.
We need more videos to influence us to practice and push us more. ✊🏽
Agreed
well said!
the fact that he's the same age as me crushes my soul bc he is 1000x better than me and I'm going into jazz performance),:
Just keep working hard! Everyone is at different stages - don’t worry about comparing yourself

you are fine. just get a good mentor.
Don't feel bad. I'm like 3x's his age and he's doing circles around me...smh 🤦🏽
Impressions is a fun tune to jam on. Whatever you're playing is gonna sound interesting when that half step raise comes around.

7:36 the classic careless whisper line
Dave looks like he's in a different world when Simon is soloing!
The magical realm of music

the way he starts the solo is so hip, you taught him well K
I appreciate that!
3 years now but i still watch this every time since then
I'm going to be as good as that student one-day. Oh man it's killing me. I know I can get there. It wants to come out damn it! IT WANTS TO COME OUT!!!
Keep working hard!! That’s what Simon did- you can do it!
That student has what it takes emotionaly to be great.

Still go back to this video every now and then, an old but a classic one, I'm always entertained every time

Came back to this video and man you are looking at the student like fletcher did at the end of whiplash head nod and all I love this
ive been looking for "war path" type playing for years, and ive finally found it!
Oh man. You guys make my day. Absolute killer. Thank for sharing and for keeping Coltrane's spirit alive from here to eternity 🙏💯🙏👏💖
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate that
Dayum! I would have "hated" him in high school, he is soooo talented!
When I get back to the states I hope that you have some gigs playing … absolutely gorgeous playing!
Send me an email when you're here and I'll let you know!
Dang. This happened a year ago. This kid is outstanding.
Amazing. Youre both great.

Well boys..... it’s time to hit the practice room
One of the best teacher and very fine student
His lines are really brilliant
Simon is the real deal. And I love his grimaces when Dave goes way out. Both burnin!

Can you make a video on the exercises Simon uses or what you recommend to get better at playing bebop?

Wow! Another great video.

Wow 😮 just wow 😧 #goals... I've been practicing tho! And I've learned the head to Confirmation! Still working on the rest 😩

Thanks! Not sure how many others are at his level (or will get to) - he's pretty unique in that sense! I taught him since he was in 5th grade, but he already was playing for a little bit before that.
Simon has a really nice Kenny Garrett-esque tone, I'm jealous.
Don’t be jealous- just keep working towards it! Get the sound you want in your head and keep adjusting until you get closer and closer.
Awesome video! What’s your student’s mouthpiece setup?
Thanks! It's a Ted Klum Acoustimax, and I think he was on D'Addario Select Jazz reeds.
