We're out. $14.95 a month or $126 a year. It is completely worth it to buy it. Not going to "lease" any software. I either own it, or I find other DAW's that I can own. I can own Studio One 6.5 pro edition for $149.99 complete. They also have a subscription offer, Studio One +. I'm afraid that Bandlab is going to learn the hard way that subscriptions drive away customers.
They can have both, but I 100% agree that there should be an option to purchase using the 'old' model - buy it and it's yours, including a reasonable bug fix etc period, and, a discount for any major release (e.g. how Propellerhead does it). I will definitely support it if they did this.
@@barron267 Not looking for "free". I'm looking for non-subscription. I'll pay $149.99 for Studio One 6.5. That isn't "free". I don't "rent or lease" any software. If that's their only option, I'll buy somewhere else.
@@rocsaltjohnNo, the current price is for Bandlab 'Backstage Pass' membership. This only gives you a preview (none-saveable) of Cakewalk Sonar, it's not the price for the subscription. Listen to what Mike says right at the beginning of his video.
I've had a fairly extensive play with this - liking it a lot. Still a few tiny niggles but looking good. I'm also finding the new UI very light on system resources. Great to have the Concrete Limiter back, I'm a big fan of the low frequency saturation. Great review, as always. Thanks for continuing to keep us all up to speed.
I’m a 20+ year Sonar user. I won’t be doing a subscription based service. Ok with paying each time a major version comes out. Thanks Mike, very nice review!
Great video Mike! - a couple of things for clarification: 1. The spectrum analyser is part of the Pro Channel EQ module, so not only does the spectrum analyser need to be enabled, both the Pro Channel and the Pro Channel EQ module also need to be enabled, otherwise no audio is running through it to analyse. Tweaking the EQ plot as you did in the video will automatically enable both the Pro Channel and Pro Channel EQ. 2. Dragging effects to make sends: Quick grouping is supported with this operation - i.e. If you a have a track selection, holding CTRL while dropping the effect on the send area will add a send on all selected tracks. Also, holding ALT while dropping the effect will put the effect in an Aux track instead of a Bus. Due to how the Plugin Browser works, you need to use CTRL and/or ALT *after* you start dragging - but as long as you're holding them down at the point of dropping, they should work.
It truly is madness...everyone from your office software, to web plugins, notation software, news sites, music tutorials, cloud storage, etc., etc., they all want subscription. How many times can you pay $10 to $20 per month without running out of money? And when you stop paying suddenly nothing works anymore! Madness.
You always show me something new!!!! I've been beta testing Cakewalk Sonar or the past few months and I love the new features and UI. It's made my workflow a little simpler & faster.
I'm really stoked about your new Sonar channel! Most of what I know about the BandLab version I learned from you (there were only ~500 subscribers when I discovered you). While I expect a relatively modest acceleration in the new learning curve this new channel will present (don't want to get thrown into the deep end too quickly), there's one issue that I hope has a solution that you'll get around to. Namely, how to copy clips or entire tracks, hopefully including all plugins, settings, and automation lanes, from one project to another. I've needed and waited so long for such a feature. 😭
Like others here, Cakewalk has been the main DAW for many years for me and I hope it stays that way. Appreciate your all your vids on it very much and will continue to down the road, I'm sure. Thanks for sticking with it, too. Here's hoping the new version isn't too pricy. Cheers.
I started out in the 1990's with Cakewalk Home Studio and a Yamaha MU-80 sound module, making midi backing tracks for my downsized bar band. At this stage of the game, I'll probably be sticking with Cakewalk no matter what they charge.
I was wondering how the interface was going to look. I can see how much it is a continuation of the current Cakewalk by Bandlab rather than a dramatic change. Good to be able to see it. Hope that the company figures out their pricing scheme soon because the longer they delay, the more appealing going to other products will be.
Don't you think they already know the pricing? Of course they do. It's time they came out with it. I could be wrong but I think it won't be subscription based, certainly if they're reading the comments. Probably three different levels at increasingly higher prices.
It looks pretty good Mike. What will make the difference to me on whether or not to dive in is the option for a one time purchase. If they do that and its reasonable I'm in.
I have been a Cakewalk/Sonar user since Sonar 4.....Love it.....I like the new features, just hope it is stable and doesn't cost an arm or leg and preferably without subscription.
I have purchased Sonar lifetime updates before. 👍 I will still subscribe or buy the new Cakewalk Sonar, "loyal" fan for life! The new learning curve is a bit daunting but I am sure it will be fine. 😊 Thanks for this Sonar preview video and awesome new channel! Good luck with the new channel! 🎶
Thanks for your tutorials man I started with cakewalk to produce my first song and used your videos to get the best out of it and subsequently was invited to 2 different bands that I went on to record with and play multiple shows. Good stuff man it was that beginning that got me where I am and your helped me get my foot in the door. Thank you thank you
Thanks Mike for this video, and yes... I'm not going to be disoriented by a big visual change! I especially hope that it's not gonna cost too much, it's a good thing when you record music for pleasure, and not as professional musician.
Thank you so much Mike, for such detailed reviews as you usually make! So many things i still have to learn while being 12+ years Sonar user. Good luck with the new channel and let us be with you on this road!
Mike, Great review. As always, your adept and thorough style of teaching shines through. Thank you for continuing to provide this content. I am routing for Cakewalk. Currently, I am finishing some projecta in Cakewalk, and, due to the uncertainty of its future, have started all new prohects in Studio One. I appreciate your other page as well. 😊

Really glad your following this for me (us). Can't wait to see more about SONAR, particularly the price! So far it looks like I'm going to dismiss it out of hand just because it has a price tag (everything does) but what it is and how often I have to pay it as you know will make all the difference.
I feel like I'm nudging notes to get them in time about 90% of the time whenever I'm composing. Having a negative offset per articulation is a GOD SEND. This makes Cakewalk the new king of midi editing, in my opinion. I'll finally be able to focus on just writing the damn music!
Last night I had a catastrophic timing glitch however it was a one off and could possibly have been op error as by last "night" I mean 4 AM Texas time😅
I'm basically a beginner. Only been using Cakewalk for a year or so off and on. Until I get better at using Cakewalk I can't see using the new features you showed. I will wait to see what the pricing is and how it will be distributed. Thanks as usual!
Nice video! I don't know how I ended up here because I'm more involved with some "other DAW's" but still got curious and watched the video, and I had a good time! It's obvious that you're passionate about Cakewalk and that made it really interesting and fun for me to follow. I really enjoyed the look into the workflow, especially because I'm used to something different.
thanks Mike - nice to see project start and end markers. Would be even nicer if you could set the bar count from the project start instead of the "beginning of time",
I feel so nostalgic when it comes to Cakewalk. Used it since '91 up to when the "troubles" started (I paid like alot of others the forever update costs...cough..😂).. Had to switch over to Cubase Pro in the end but always had a soft spot for it. Now seeing it have more development money spent on it makes me very happy. Fantastic DAW 🔥🔥
Awesome Vid!!! I have been part of the beta testing, and it’s been great! But I was not aware of the Zip save!!! My only complaint is I am not digging the 2D look. But on the beta message boards, we have been told that a classic theme will soon be available.
Great vid. The new Cakewalk looks pretty good. Some good new features. I hope it's not ridiculously priced. If it is reasonable I will most likely be buying it.
There are a few nice additions there and I think I'd get used to the slightly different GUI. The only thing that would make me stay away is a subscription based payment.
Thanks Mike! As always- so helpful and informative! I’ve used both Cakewalk and Studio One for years. Looking like Cakewalk Sonar might be back in the game!
Thanks for this early look, Mike. I'm still using CbB, the entirely free one, and I'm still hoping it will remain accessible indefinitely, even if never updated again. It's familiar, and I'm used to it and know how to do what I want to do with it (including, in many cases, thanks to your tips!). And I saw nothing in this glimpse at Sonar that would entice me away - so far. I know there's more than what you've covered, but based on just this I'd likely stick with CbB as long as I can. When and if I can't, I'll look at Sonar - if the pricing is reasonable (meaning purchase outright, not subscription). Otherwise, I'll probably have to move on altogether.
Love Cakewalk Sonar and have been a user before and during Bandlab's dev involvement and it has been great and the most logical and user-friendly DAW I know of. Would love to also test the version you previewed here, as it keeps just getting better every time. Thanks for starting this channel!
I'll probably have some opportunity this weekend to do some testing. I'm eager to learn if things like CAL scripts still work. My efforts are very MIDI-focused so I'm not anticipating any issues there. I'll admit, I miss the pointer finger in the air tapping along to the snare in the intro :) but I can appreciate that you're starting something new. I hope more of your Creative Sauce subsmake their way over here.
Hello from Germany, thanks for your video, much infos to find. But I have a strange question: How does it sound? Meanwhile I have testet Cubase after using the BandLab-Version and I find it much more powerfull and better sounding... but so under-developed versus Sonar Platinum - it hurts and shows everyone the extreme high level of Sonar!
Hi Mike, good to see you back! Thanks for this insight. Looks nice with some interesting new features. Of course I will hope for quite some more making it worth the switch from CbB, especially regarding my favorite part: the Arranger. I think CbB lacked some smart "programming" of Sections: like playing multiple (sequences of) Sections back-to-back was selecting one after the other i.o. selecting one giving it a "play x times" option. I hope that still will be on Sonar's drawing board. It helps my composing/structuring workflow as the overview will be more manageable. I'd elaborated on that on your FB CbB page. Warm greetings from Amsterdam.
I would be interested in knowing more about how well it communicates with other midi and audio devices like Roland, Akai, Audient, Boss, Shure mics and various preamps etc... and if there is a mastering suite included. Good video.....can't wait to hear more!
Thanks Mike! We’ll have to see what they do. I’ve had Cakewalk since 1996. I still have the original Sonar CD’s with the program. I hope they make this reasonable. I would hate to be in for an expensive experience.
If I don't remember imcorrectly you can also drag amd drop samples into the pads in Session Drummer 3 which makes it very easy and good to use with different sample packs. No trimming or adsr though
Thanks Mike. Looks promising. I wonder what other things might not work beside color customization, i.e., will PAL scripts still work? What user customization things may need to be rebuilt, such as Custom User Scales in Snap to Scale, Workspaces, etc.
Thanks for the preview of the new Sonar. One thing I hope they will do is come out with a more interesting color scheme. These remind me of early schemes but I have come to enjoy a more colorful layout such as the current Cakewalk by Bandlab with the individual track colors. Other than than that it looks great. Would you happen to know if the sound quality is the same or has it improved.
Well , ive tried this new vers but since i saw this video i didnt think there was so many changes, ( wasnt looking hard enough ) starting to like it more and more, hope the final vers is worth the wait and price TBA ... also hoping that there is a good choice of UI outa the box, thanks buddy for your insights to this vers, from the old man in Uk ,🎸
Good vid. Some cool new features. The automation smoothing will be nice. I'm hoping there will be more keyboard shortcuts than the version it's replacing so that I can add them to my Stream Deck.

Reminds me of the old sonar platinum by Cakewalk
Thanks for the preview of the new Sonar. One thing I hope they will do is come out with a more interesting color scheme. These remind me of early schemes but I have come to enjoy a more colorful layout such as the current Cakewalk by Bandlab with the individual track colors. Other than than that it looks great. Would you happen to know if the sound quality is the same or has it improved.
Nice looking DAW and nice features.
Hi Mike, thanks for the update. Good luck with the new channel
Mike, If they do a subscription format i will go to Studio One Pro. I don't rent software.
Good vid. Some cool new features. The automation smoothing will be nice. I'm hoping there will be more keyboard shortcuts than the version it's replacing so that I can add them to my Stream Deck.
Thanks for the show-and-tell, Mike!
