Laura, you're cracking me up. That's not a pepper grinder but a coffee grinder. Grind coffee beans with it. Put the beans and water into the coffee pot and put the pot on the cooker. Add propane, turn it on and get 4 cups of coffee. Coffee builds up your stamina when depleted. The lamps and such that you can find will only work with the white house, otherwise they're just decorations. For a pre-designed or custom cabin you need the DIY generator. Then you build the lights, fridge and other stuff to work with it. You can build wall lights at the workbench so there's no need to put lamp posts in your house. However, I do get it, you want to move on so that's cool.

Next build. Put hardhat hanging beside the door (if can put it on a wall), the rain coat under that with the work boots under it.
Come home, take off your hat and raincoat, remove boots (don't want to dirty the floor), and get ready for dinner. :-)

Honestly any upgrade has to be the best one.. the max Fireplace was epic looking, IMO
I think that the best way to enlighten your base is to hang some industrial wall lamps (indoor and outdoor). They are brighter than anything else, they're powered by the power generator without excessive consumption, and if they are wisely placed, only one for each room is usually enough to ensure sufficient brightnes. You'll be able to craft this item after upgrading the workbench at the third level if I’m not mistaken.
PS: And to complete the whole, you should also consider to build a decent vegetable garden and a chicken coop which will not be useless for survival...

Regarding the generator. Prety sure you have to turn on lamp in the generator first and then turn on light. Playing dev version.
