Being 19 myself and being in the hobby since 17 I’d say it can easily be done. From someone who has all the necessary knowledge it can see very simplistic when explaining to someone else but it is genuinely only because you are so used to it. When your son recapped on what you had done today I would say except a few prompts being needed he had a fantastic response on what to do and the order. Fair play to him!

Being a teenager with tanks i have a few tanks.
Tip 1 watch lots of aquarium coop!
Tip 2 get api stress coat when changing water
Tip 3 get a shirt without sleeves, when you are reaching into a tank you will get your shirt sleeves wet (every wonder why king of diy weres sleevless shirts?)
Tip 4 Never wash your hands before maintaining the tank! The soap could hurt the fish!
Tip 5 always turn the heaters off when you drain the water beneath the heaters! It could start a fire!!!
Have fun! Ps always have a towel near by, you will (just like me) will probably spill alot!

If you smoke, vape, are living in a house with smokers where smoke has contaminated surfaces (3rd hand smoke), wash your hands. Nicotine is extremely toxic to fish, and is way worse than waking your hands. I wash my hands everytime my hands go into the tank, and I've been keeping fish since I was a 12 y.o. (I had three 10 gallon tanks, a 20 gallon tank when I was 12-16) I've never had an issue.

When I was 14 I got a job at the LFS and saved up to buy myself a 180 gallon tank I got permission to buy (I don't think they thought I was as serious as I was). Now I won't pretend I took care of it as well as I do my tanks now over 30 years later, but my fish were healthy through high school and most made it through college despite my only being able to do water changes and filter maintenance when I came home and it being honestly overstocked with, at that point, very large cichlids. So yeah, kids can do it, but I won't pretend there weren't times when my focus waned and the tanks got neglected some. Thankfully, my dad was always there to point out when they didn't look good, lol.

I'd print a paper with instructions on and seal it in plastic to put on the wall (:

My mom did the list thing, with me, when I was learning chores. She'd write the steps down and walk me thru it the first 2 or three times and then let me have at it.

Nice video, Cute cat, not sure I'd trust it alone in that room LOL.. Just thinking about what you were saying at 8:40 about the sand being pulled into the siphon, I wanted to suggest you try drilling a couple of holes into the tube thereby slowing down the suction a little so only lighter dirt gets sucked up so you can make it easier and quicker to go around the whole tank. Might be worth experimenting on a spare bit of pipe..

Awesome video, great to see the family! Your African cichlids are looking beautiful! Why are you trying to snap a towel on the mans butt while he does tank maintenance lmao 🤣

I have been keeping fish since I was 13 years old! If you have the passion, it is a piece of cake for a teenager!👍😊

How big of a tank do you need to keep a teenager in? Are they aggressive?

A very good demonstration on how to teach someone a job. Explain, show, they review the process, correct any mistake and be patient. In addition you are a great dad! A bit lazy but a great dad.
