    FULL REVIEW:
    Re-inventing an icon is never an easy thing to do, but that’s exactly what Renault is hoping to do with the reborn R5. Having seen MINI and Fiat successfully resurrect classic designs from the past, the French giant is betting big on its iconic supermini. It ushers in a new era of electric Renaults and will be followed into showrooms by a reborn Renault 4, which will also take styling cues from its famous predecessor.
    There are two batteries up choose from; a 52kWh battery that gives the Renault an official WLTP range of 248 miles which will be the only option from launch, while a smaller 40kWh battery managing 186 miles will be joining the lineup at a later date.
    The Renault 5 E-Tech comes as standard with 11 kW bi-directional charging including vehicle-to-load capability. This allows you to charge an electrical device - whether it’s your laptop or an e-bike - from the 5’s high voltage battery. It also means that the Renault supports vehicle-to-grid charging, which allows you to use the car’s battery to help balance your home energy or even to feed power back into the grid and earn money from it at peak times. You do need a home charger that’s capable of supporting this function, though; not all home wallboxes can do this even if the car has the necessary tech.
    Does the new Renault 5 look like a winner to you? Let us know in the comments below.

    Before watching this I watched the "What Car?" review, and they commented on how quiet their car was at motorway speeds, with very little wind noise, and they also saw efficiency of around 4mi/kWh. It will be interesting to see how these cars do when they're being bought in numbers, as it looks as though there are some inconsistencies with build quality at the moment.

    Honest review. Good to hear. I don't understand why ground up EV's do not have 1 pedal driving or frunks. Simply no excuse not to have these at this stage of EV development. (BMW's i3 had both from 2012/13). And real world efficiency for this is a concern (as it is for the Megane). Will wait to see what owners see after buying them. But an excellent price it must be said from a manufacturer that is not Chinese.

      To answer the initial remark, I guess it's somehow a relic trait of the corporate culture of historic carmakers. They like EVs to creep like ICE cars while in gear without even touching the gas pedal. And they are afraid that their usual customers could be unhappy of a change in behavior. But as I said: just give people choices! Allow the setting, just don't make it the default one.

    Bit of a disappointing review from Ginny. I drive a Megane and it has some quirks but is a really good car. The drive selector is easy to get used to even if French logic means R and D are not where you expect. The cable storage is exactly the same as on the Megane and frankly yes it could be a nuisance if you had to get to the cable with a boot full of stuff..but here’s the thing. I rarely carry the cable as away from I pretty much always use CCS rapid chargers so don’t need my cable. On the rare occasion I know I might (e.g a hotel 7kwh charger) I just find some space in the boot. Oh and yes the underfloor storage bit is actually the same issue in many EVs. As to the speech recognition..just say heh Google it is brilliant and amongst many things it will do is turn volume up and down and the same with temperature. Iam not a fan of Google but their car system is really good.
    As to the rest..iam sure driving is a matter of taste and other journalist seem to like it and I may or may not if and when I have a test drive.
    Final bit. Wind noise. I suspect the car you drove has the same problem I currently have and that needs fixing. Basically some of the windows are falling a small amount within the door. If you hit the raise window button it goes away.

    I find it really amusing that car "reviewers" seem to all have trouble mastering 3 stalks and an audiopod in Renault's electric cars. I've been driving a Megane E-Tech Electric for 2 years (my first Renault) and the number of times I've got the gear selector and wiper arm wrong can be counted on two hands, so on average less than once every two months - but of course learning skills varies. As for the audiopod, I think it's a really good solution, you get used to it quickly and you don't have to take your hands off the steering wheel or your eyes off the road to operate it. I previously had a DS 3 THP Sport, it had "pods" for both cruise control and audio control, it's probably the best control of both I've experienced, and far better than buttons in the steering wheel, same as Renault's audio pod, you didn't need remove your hands from the steering wheel or your eyes from the road because you couldn't see the two pods anyway and within a few days their operation was completely intuitive - like Renault's audiopod.

All cars tune those to be conservative (except infamously Tesla) to ensure you won't get caught out running out of juice. Others on the same junket showed 4.6 miles/kWh meaning it is very high efficiency. I guess we'll wait for some careful consumption testing. But bravo on the styling! I think they are just trying to make nice cars that just happen to be EV’s!! I wish more car makers did that! I don’t need a New/Ugly car that shouts I’m an EV!! If I had to say who’s doing that it’s Kia/Hyundai at the moment.

    Compared to the Citroen eC3, it is a bit obvious how they have pared back to achieve the price. Like the original Renault 5 it has poor rear legroom where the Citroen definitely scores. On the boot like the Megane it isn't very long but deep instead. Probably the eC3 has more useful space although the volume is less on paper. As usual Renault errs on the very optimistic as regards range. However it does have external style and Renault have learned not to penny pinch on the heat pump which is only an optional extra on the Citroen. The only car (without a frunk) where you dont have to empty the boot to get at the cable is the Skoda Elroq which has the brilliant solution of storing it under the parcel shelf. Why has nobody thought of that before?

    • @flo_h_96
      @flo_h_96 15 часов назад

      All the negatives you mention have nothing to do with the price and equipment and used materials are still better than on the e-C3. Also the e-C3 is longer and has a smaller boot, obviously it therefore has a bit more rear leg room. But cars of this size always will either have good rear leg room or a well sized boot and not both. The boot of the e-C3 might be easier to use, but in the end if you have something big it still might fit in the R5 but not the e-C3 as the missing space might be the deciding factor. Renault is not more optimistic with range than others. In perfect conditions you can get the WLTP range with all the Renaults, whereas some cars from other manufacturers aren't able to, and only very few are able to go over the WLTP range. The Megane is very efficient and R5 is efficient too according to other reviews. The Scenic is also very efficient in most scenarios. Only on the motorway it's not the most efficient bc they made one of the best looking cars with a distinct design and not only focused on aerodynamic in the design, but it's also not a super thirty car. There other SUVs which are way more inefficient

    Personally a bit disappointed at the price point I'm sure there are plenty will think it's a bargain and it might be compared to top spec 208s but the public are looking at approaching price parity with small petrol hatch backs though the likes of Ford shooting themselves in the foot dropping their cars might help. 10 years of development required before we say these are petrol equivalents though if China is allowed to export their largesse of production things might change though some European automakers might cease to be in the face of aggressive dominating pricing.

    No adaptive cruise control on the lowest trim, who drives all manual on a highway?!?! And no I-pedal with full stop, so you have to switch between pedals all the time like in old cars, they didn't want to make it comfortable for you, high wind noise on an EV, no frunk, no buttons on the steering wheel for basic things and limited range, the "pre-dirt-textile" design ... that really sucks.
    With the, I believe Opel Astra here in Germany (Vauxhall in the UK), Stellantis has proven to built very energy efficient electric motors and cars and I hoped they would share modules within that company, how come this thing has a poor range/efficiency? It better be really inexpensive, else it not going to sell, because there are plenty of cool small EV being released within the next few months.
    One positive thing that matters, it comes with 5 years warranty, not like our overpriced German cars with some ridiculous 2 years, which has already been burning a hole in my pocket two years ago, when my last ICE car wouldn't pass its first technical inspection, because the brakes couldn't be cleared and rusted away, because of super cheap steel. I guess they needed to save money to make up for the Diesel gate losses, where they reimbursed US customers with their fraud but not the faithful German customers that I am not part of anymore.
    Anyway praise to Stellantis to come up with some basic promised quality, which still isn't quite what the South Koreans offer (7-8 years), or some Vietnamese car with 10 years, but no current service network that I know of, but still way better than 2 years for a German car with planned obsolescence.

    • @JonathanMorris777
      @JonathanMorris777 День назад

      When I drove long distances, I had a car with adaptive cruise. Now my current car has manual cruise control which is okay for short motorway trips, but generally I use manual control - but that's because I do maybe 200-300 miles a year on a motorway and the rest in towns and cities.. which I guess is what this car is for, at least those buying the basic trim model. If you do 5-10 miles a day going to work or the supermarket, do you need all the creature comforts the higher trim levels offer? I respect Chinese manufacturers opting for a single spec with all the toys, but in some ways that's a lot of stuff to potentially fail (or stop receiving support) as the car ages, and some people will want simplicity - oh and a cost saving.

      But not everybody needs an adaptive cruise control and people who don't want it or don't need it bc they are for example only do city driving they don't want to pay for something they don't need. Also with the smallest battery range is limited anyways so people who buy that version won't do long trips with it anyway. Also which car in that price category does have that as standard? You can't have a low price and still get all the features, that's simply not possible. The high wind noise must have been a problem with that specific car as in no other review that was a problem, the opposite was the case they all said it's pretty quiet. Also in the other reviews the car was pretty efficient, so it might have to do with the driving style, therefore it has pretty good range for such a small car which isn't very expensive. Other cars with similar size have smaller batteries or batteries of the same size but are much more expensive. A frunk is simply not possible on such a small car with front wheel drive, bc there is no space for it. And yes front wheel drive is better, bc the frunk would be good for the cable, but for nothing else and you would therefore lose a lot of space in the boot if it was rear wheel drive, which in the end means that things wouldn't fit in the boot that fit now bc of the front wheel drive and bigger boot. And if something bigger wouldn't fit anymore, what would you do? Break it to put one part in the boot and the other in the frunk? Also what do you mean no buttons for the basic things on the steering wheel? There are buttons for all the important functions on the steering while. The only thing which isn't is the radio/volume control which is on the lowest stalk behind the wheel on the right side as in every Renault since the late 80s. And that is the best system ever, super easy to reach while driving. Every Renault driver loves that and would be mad if they would change that.

    • @n1vca
      @n1vca 10 часов назад

      @@flo_h_96 Thanks for your reply ... I live in Europe (Germany) and we have a new European law that makes new cars have an adaptive cruise control by design, because less stupid stuff happens and it doesn't cost much ... its easy to be implemented and makes so much sense, you can not just bump into a car if you are not focused, and stop & go is all automatic, which is a part of most peoples drive to and from work. I am surprised despite this EU rule they can sell this?!?! Maybe its just the automatic emergency brake that is mandatory?
      Just look at the coming Hyundai Inster, it will be cheaper than the R5 and come with plenty of passive safety and comfort even in the lowest trim. And it has 8 years warranty, and with few bucks on top it almost drives by itself, but I agree, that is a nice to have not a necessity. Extremely comfortable smart single pedal driving also is part of the base trim, so that should be our standard. I actually like the exterior of the R5 better, on the inside they are both not exactly my cup of tea, but the interior's flexibility, technical features and price are really remarkable and since I spend all the time in the inside driving, and its for me, not for people on the outside, I totally prefer the many safety and comfort features that I have never seen on any other car in this lowest price range.
      You flip the seats and sleep in it, you can rearrange the back seat for more or less space in the trunk, you can flip the co pilots seat and use it as table for eating or your notebook, sitting the the 2nd row ... its just a really well designed ultra flexible car that can have all the safety features you can get a car 4 times the price ...anyway I think it is not enough to put all the focus on a retro car, when it has too many disadvantages.
      But on the other hand I don't want to project my personal extremely pragmatic view onto others, its just that I want the best price/value ratio for my car, no matter how it looks, it just has to meet some technical safety criteria and be very comfortable. I dislike SUVs and actually bought an crossover SUV, because it was as special offer at the time, but an quite efficient one.
      I am German, almost like the exact horrible stereotype 🤣. So maybe many French people are into odd retro designs and it will become a big success, especially if it will be subsidized by the country in an act of patriotism, which I think would be a good step to accelerate the EV growth.
