Can you react to the speech of the movie braveheart from Mell Gipson
life is hard enough, but the biggest fight is with yourself, second thoughts are impossible to avoid, in one second your life can change forever, a call, mom died. that second your life changes, its and example. But for me the worst experiences are those bad news that made me feel powerless, life surely hits hard, listen to older people, they are trying to make you understand that life will flash before your eyes, enjoy the simple things, as simple as gravity. I'm 25 and I had to learn the wrong way, now I'm alone, life hit me hard and its been keeping me on my knees, i just wish my parents were alive, i never got to say thanks and how sorry and dumb i was. i could spend the rest of my life us 3, mom, dad, and me, just us three hugged forever
This scene broke me. Rocky wasn't just talking to his son, he was speaking directly to me. And you.
Agreed. It still gets me every time.
100% Agree!!!!
and himself.
This scene literally changed my life. I was in a very bad place while I was doing my PhD and I stumbled upon the whole scene on RUclips. It did make me remember who I was and allowed me to embark on a journey of self-healing and empowerment.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Same! I tried to memorize it lol
The speech from Rocky 5 always gets me.
It's kind of funny to think about it now, but I saw this film in the theater when I'd turned 31, my dad had recently died of a sudden heart attack, and I was "feeling old" dealing with the subject of mortality. The theme of this episode, especially framed within this speech, gave me a big slap in the face and reminded me my life was far, far from over....unless I just gave up, of course.
Aside from reminding his son to visit his mother, I believe this speech reminds Rocky of when his wife helped him with her own speech in Rocky 3. The two scenes are very reminiscent to each other and it almost seems like he channels her through this speech. I’ll never forget the last bit of that scene where Rocky asks “how’d you get so tough?” And his wife Adrian responds “I live with a fighter”.
The body language in this scene is so great. Both actors are believable because of their ability to act with their whole body. 😮
I think this scene is so great because anyone can feel it and understand it
The classic “brush back” to end the scene. Rocky gets in his son’s physical space as he passes him. Subtle body language about who is the boss.
Sometimes people forget that before being a famous actor, a strong sports man, a painter, a producer, a directer, an ICON , he was a writter...an EXTRAORDINARY writter. Im so very thankful to Mr Stallone for Rocky.
Additionally, Sylvester Stallon knew what it was like to struggle. Before he found success with Rocky, he was living below the poverty line to where he sold his own dog in order to keep a roof over his head since acting offers were either scarce or paid peanuts. Life hit him, he kept moving forward and gave us one of film's most beloved icons.
Exactly. His writing is what made Rocky in the first place.
What I really like here is not only is it a great speech, but it also makes the subplot in Rocky V that much more important and relevant. Robert's issues of living under Rocky's shadow is also underscored in Creed & Creed II as well. All this actually helps make people new to the Rocky franchise wonder why old-timers didn't like Rocky V so much; and I'm completely fine with that. (We just had to wait 16 years for Rocky Balboa for this speech; whereas one can binge watch all the Rocky/Creed movies in a weekend.)
Rocky's speech made me teary eyed.
I have also blamed others and circumstances for many things in my life. Regardless of what has happened I can either lay down and give up or I can stand back up after getting hit and I can keep fighting.
I hear you, I was getting a bit emotional too as I recorded it but I tried to keep it under control.
Hello Donna how're you doing today?
you and a billion other people. including me. The difference is we see it and can act on it. I think getting to the point of seeing it is the HARDEST part``
The pause he made before starting was a great beginning. Also, how he listened to his son set the tone for his fantastic uninterrupted speech.
Yes, my wife said the same thing. Rocky actually listened and considered his kid's point before he responded.
Probably the best dialogue to be put on film.
One thing I did notice is how engaged you were whilst watching this scene. By the end of Rocky's speech, your eyes were subtly glazed. Thank you so much for your genuine reactions and the breakdown of such a powerful monologue.
Hi, Chris. It's obviously not the first time I've watched it but it "gets me" every time. I for sure was getting emotional, but I mostly held it together (with great effort!).
@@alexanderlyon this is the best channel I have found.
Thank you!
The camera shot is amazing. because it feels like he is not just talking to Robert, but also to us, the audience too.
Yes, very true! No doubt that was planned because it's perfection.
a friend and me watched the Rocky series and we hit rewind on this speech a couple times! it’s a goodie. We saw the last line about visiting his mom as the KO punch.
Oh, and of course a speech recommendation: the motivational speech of Braveheart
What does KO mean? Thanks
"KO punch" means Knock Out. It's a boxing term.
This ALWAYS makes me cry. I think ive seen every Rocky movie at least 5 times. I cry during every single one. This is such a great analysis. Thank you!
I hear ya. I got a little choked up myself in the video. But I was concerned if I tried to re-recorded that I would’ve gotten even more emotional! 😂
I am watching this together with my 9 and 12yo kids. they asked me questions from "what is storytelling?" to questions that made me speechless. This is a good education to me and my kids. THank you so much
Thank you for sharing!
Rocky's gestures are spot on. When he says, "it will beat you to your knees, not pointing fingers, and that ain't you!" He emphasizes his points so well.
Yes, agreed.
My dad used to give his own version of this speech to me. He'd say that how you got to your low point doesn't matter because you are what keeps you there and you're the only one that can get yourself out of it. Blaming others only adds weight to the struggle
Wow! This is good!
So true why my parents taught me never to give up and don't let others put you down why I don't care what others think do Your best you can
Really good scene! I think everyone needs to hear this speech. We need to be reminded that we all at one time or another are knocked down in this life but the key like he said is to get back up & not let it keep you down.
Haven't seen this movie in many years.
Such a heartfelt scene that was executed so well. Thank you for using this!
Good job Alexander. There couldn’t be a better choice to breakdown than this one. Whenever I feel a bit down and out I rewatch this bit. There is definately something in the way he delivers the speech that makes you take it personally.
I feel the same way.
Thanks for making this video clip to focus on the life-learning behind it! This is a great speech that go way beyond the just-feel-good effect! This is a testament to the great 7-habit's "be proactive" title. 7-habits is the mother of all self-help wisdom!
Rocky manages to sprinkle his unconditional love to Robert throughout. Very powerful! Very impressive!
For anyone who like this speech and not-yet study the 7-habits, I sincerely urge you to do so. Not just scan through them. But to study them deeply until you can claim to "live by them." Use the knowledge to reflect on your own life. You won't regret spending the effort.
Maybe it is the New York type of "accent" and the inflection of Rocky's voice that grabs us all. Not to mention that he does, as you say, begin with something most of us can relate to, his mom. It pulls us in, so to speak, because of the empathic feelings. The whole visual, emotional and sound of his voice package, coming at us all at once, in a good way. Makes it feel genuine to me anyway. And,,,,like you said that even though it is a " movie" it stirs real emotions. Paraphrasing here. Many thanks Alex! Great way to start my day. :o)
Yes, I agree, Michael. His voice and accent sound authentic. Nothing phony about it. It's a "real" voice and that adds impact and emotion.
Awesome video, thank you!
I was looking for a speech of some kind to put in 2 parts of a new song I'm working on called "Only The Strong", and when I woke up this morning this Rocky speech popped into my head right away, so I looked it up, and I'm not sure yet if it'll work for the timing of the song, (*might need something more concise); but then I stumbled onto THIS video, and a whole new side of communication/linguistics/etc. that I didn't even know existed!
I'm a self taught rapper/producer/songwriter, a writer in general, and I've been moving towards creating more content & potential public speaking engagements in the near future... and I've always been very intrigued by, (and passionate about), writing and the English language; and all the different things I can do with it, by learning to understand different aspects of it, and crafting it into a powerful tool for delivering whatever message/feeling/effect I wish to express at the time.
Now I have your channel and a new rabbit hole to dive into, that I know will help me progress even further!
As soon as you mentioned the Ethos thing you got my attention, as I had never even heard of such a concept, or the fact that professors exist who teach this stuff... like I said, I'm self taught in every way, so I often go years missing fundamentals & major aspects of things I would've learned much earlier if I had gone through formal education/training of any kind... like music making for example; I was in year 6 before I really went back and learned actual songwriting & music theory, now it's a year later and I've leveled up x100 because of it.
Anyway, glad I found this, I'll be subscribing and checking out more of your videos as I go!
Cheers! ✌😎

In his appeal to Pathos, and his line about visiting his mother to bring the arc full circle, his voice has retreated to calm...but his face and body convey disappointment at the path his son has, so far, chosen to take... he walks almost through his son, like a tank, making him move out of his way. His body language looms... unbreakable...powerful... he's Rocky now...the champ!...and that physical power exits the conversation with him in control... making him the one to follow. The son started the conversation as the leader...and he let him lead... and when Rocky was finished, Rocky was the one to follow and the son was left in awe.
I love that you point out : ...the path that the son has chosen..."SO FAR" ! ...making it clear the son CAN make the changes he needs to.
I personally love the line “It’s not about how hard you can hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit, but keep moving forward.”
A reminder not to confuse strength with willpower. That you can be in pain but still make progress. That everything doesn’t need to be perfect for you to find happiness where you are.
Rocky's son is held back by the opinion of others; his son is in control of nothing but himself; when he figures this out, he will be free to express his identity - thanks for illustrating that the truth always packs the greatest punch 👊
Great analysis. The biggest thing I’ve taken away from this iconic speech is that it can be applied to any life challenge. Work, relationships, personal development, whatever it happens to be - You can give in, or face it head on. The boxing analogy Rocky naturally defers to (‘it ain’t about how hard you can hit’) makes it quite relatable for everyone, because even if you’re not into boxing most people can appreciate that metaphor of facing an opponent.
I like the way the camera zooms in closer on Rocky and his son as he starts to raise his voice and become more impassioned during the speech. It brings more intensity than a wide shot would. I like also that they chose not to have Robert speak at all during the speech or after it. We are left with only Rocky’s words to linger on, and it emphasises that Robert has no answer or refute here - Rocky is 110% correct.
This was a wonderful video! Well done! I'm so glad I found your channel. Your messages enlighten and inspire me. ❤️
It's absolutely imperative that Rocky chooses the moment of greatest impact to raise his voice in communicating to his son. If you start out that way, the message, no matter how well constructed will lose meaning if the one being spoken to feels as though they are being chastised. To keep that moment of raising the voice for the end, he shows that any frustration or anger he has is not directed toward the person of his son, rather at the lies which his son has mistakenly embraced.
Yes, it was an awesome emotional build up.
This is so good, Alex! One other thing that stood out to me was body language and hand gestures. The way he's standing with his shoulders square communicates confidence, rather than cowering back in response to his son's accusations, and helps to complement the message. Also, holding up his hand and pointing to his palm helped to underscore the line about how his son was so small that he fit into the palm of his hand. He did just enough without overdoing it, since too many hand gestures and things can be distracting.
Nice details, Kelly. I agree that his body language and gestures add lots of impact. Good call out.
Great point. The hand gestures really fit. The holding his hand up also showed his pride for his son. Wanting to elevate him, raising him up (father and teacher). Seeing him as more important than himself. It also stands in such sharp contrast to his son's disappointment and embarrassment at the start of the scene. You feel even more for Rocky at this point as it is so heartfelt.
Fuck all that B's
I bet my life when Stallone did this scene it took 1 take
This isn't something you can practice or pantomime
This is something you either believe or don't believe
You either feel it in ur bones or you don't feel it at all
Oh man so impactful. Forgot about this speech and immediately became emotional during and empowered even though I’ve seen this before! Truth and love. I like your breakdown and learned from it. It would take me a lot of foresight and preparation to make a speech like this, but oddly sometimes it just flows. Like you mentioned speak from what you know… that might be the most powerful thing!
Agreed, the most powerful lesson is speak about what you know.
Your videos are excellent, thank you so much for your hard work I strongly appreciate it.
I always loved this scene, after your reaction and comments there is even more depth to it. thanks
I liked the way that Rocky listened to his son's emotions & allowed him to vent out his frustrations! No, life is not all sunshine & rainbows but when we realize that difficulties are to help us be better versions of ourselves, we will then have a greater understanding of our purpose on earth! As Rocky said, "keep moving forward"! Brenda from NZ
Wonderful, Compelling exposition. Thank you.
I have subscribed to your RUclips channel and liked your reaction video. Great reaction and great way of breaking down Rocky's speech for other people to understand it better.
First of all I have my uncle to thank for getting me into the Rocky Movies as a child as he knew I was a big boxing fan in the 90's. I am now in my 30's and I still Love The Rocky saga. I also have Sylvester Stallone to thank for creating the Rocky Movies because it did back in the 90's and still inspires and motivates me to this day to stay on my life purpose and mission(s) in life while chasing all my goals, dreams , ambitions and desires that i have in life.
Now these Rocky quotes keep me moving foward , especially when times get tough in life.
Quotes from the Rocky Movies like Rocky's Trainer Mickey Goldmill says" i didn't hear no bell, so Get up , get you s.o.b. cause mickey loves ya" and a few sylvesters stallone's Quotes of Rocky Balboa such as - 'no one owes you nothing, you owe yourself"
However the biggest Rocky (Slyvester Stallone) quotes that helps keep pushing me foward and helps me keep a positive attitude is this Rocky Quote -
The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows.
It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it.
You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life.
But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward.
That's how winning is done!
Now if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth (life purpose). But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that!
That is some of the Rocky and movie Quotes that come to me whenever I am feeling negativity or having a 💩day / week, I stop and think about any situation i am in while having these Quotes remind me to fight life back despite any circumstances and how hard life, my (purpose) mission is because there is other people in worse and more tough situations than myself, so no matter how much life tries to knock me down, i always remind myself to Get up , stand up and fight life back as much as i possibly can 🥊🥊.
The "you started looking for something to blame, like a big shadow" reminds me of Platos allegory of the cave. Very philosophical and accurate. Love this movie!
Your Videos are Extremely helpful and inspiring to me via my quest of being a good Orator
Thank You Mr. Alex !!
May God continue to strengthen you so as to keep up with the good work
You're Touching a life Here in Nigeria
This really was a great and impactful scene... I needed to hear it today (and every day really)
Wonderful video Sir. I am a die-hard fan of Rocky series. This is a magnanimous video. Al Pacino's speech in Scent of a woman in the court is fantastic too. Charlie Chaplin's speech in The Great Dictator is marvelous too.
Totally agree, and, yes, Pacino's speech from "Scent Of A Woman", definitely, another fantastic favorite.
Great video. I memorized this scene from watching it so many times, and when I was in rehab I recited it at the end of my exit speech. ♥
Thanks for sharing!
@@alexanderlyonGood vid. However its not about the world, he is stating only you can keep yourself down. Life. Your life specifically. The world is supposed to be difficult. So our true being learns how to be better and above all grow.
Thats what he is saying. Its not what you do, its how you handle what appears to be obstacles and overcome them. Not how hard you hit, but can get hit and keep moving forward. Key phrase, keep moving forward.
We only stop or move forward. We either stay where we are or grow. Our purpose here however is meant to grow as individual beings. Learn from individual lives. To understand how we are all different as well as all the same.
The pain, anger, sadness, depressions, even addictions are due to us limited or stopping our growth. And yes, they are all positives. They only stop you when you look at all those things from a negative perspective. Those things are meant to force us to move forward or live in a stuck and unhappy state of being. Which not only doesnt serve yourself, it doesnt serve others, above all doesnt serve our true existence, our creator. Call him what you will.
We are all connected. You will attract positive things into your life when you look at everything from that perspective. You will also give permission to lift all others to join that positive state. So on, and so on.
I would correct you on one thing you said. Yes, this is a movie, and we know these characters are not real. However, this is certainly real-life speech. I think this speech should be played for every high school senior class heading out into the "real" World because the message in it pertains to almost everyone.
seeing you tear up after watching the speech, speaks volumes to you who you are. Would love to interview you on my podcast !
What?!?! I wasn't tearing up. Ha. He gets me every time.
@@alexanderlyon sorry, thought you were,,my bad :P
It was very dusty in the room at that exact moment and the dust was in my eye! Ha.
I just found your channel, and have been really enjoying the content. This is one of my favourite scenes of all time, motivational for sure!
Welcome aboard!
Love this speech.
Yeah, me too!
I loved your break down, thank you very much for this sir.
Enjoyed the commentary. Movie clips - so many. On the Waterfront falls into the same class. “I could have been a contender”
I was just about to bring that up! Has he done a video on that scene?
Outstanding I watch this episode hundred times❤
Oh my goodness, Alex, were you getting emotional? I was just watching your reaching! Great clip and an awesome lesson. Thank you.
Yes, I was starting to get a bit choked up by the end. I've watched it many times in the past but it always hits me. But, thankfully, I was able to get through it without needing a tissue!
@@alexanderlyon For my MBA course and this week's leadership discussion post, I plan to start it with "The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows." I will make sure to cite your video in-text and on the reference page. Indeed, it is motivational and inspiring. Traits of a good leader.
Ha. Well, no need to cite my video since the credit goes to Rocky. But thank you for the encouragement and comment.
Thanks for your analysis, most of the movies of Rocky has excellent scenes like the one you showed, watch rocky 3 when Adrian confronts him about telling the truth, it's almost as beautiful as this one, thank you
Great summary. You asked for other amazing speeches, and 2 of them are by Pacino. Scent of a Woman "But not a snitch" or Any Given Sunday "We claw with our fingernails, FOR THAT INCH". Theyre both amazing. If youre feeling a little mischevious, his speech as the Devil in Devils Advocate is pretty amazing too
Wonderful lesson. Thank you very much!
Do you know an anime called Naruto? Most people don't know this but it's an anime full of lessons and values. It would be great that you react to one of its scenes. Specially the scene when Inari is whining and complaining about how misarable his life is and Naruto put him on his place with a harsh but powerful message.
Absolutely amazing word smithing here.
Also another aspect of this particular case if how Rocky reacts calmly by listening to his son first without shouting at him and telling him that he is wrong... I guess that is the patience that one has towards the people one loves.
This is perhaps one of the most powerful moments of Cinema history
Always excellent ❤❤❤
Best ever. The higher-ups wanted to cut this.
You are very genuine too! and I guess that is why we collectively like your content... I know this is a bit off topic but I'd like you to tell us a bit about what you would consider to be a good short story; whether these aspects would apply to it also in writing. Many thanks
Interesting question. Many of the rules/norms are the same for speaking and writing and the story format is the same. But I don't write short stories so I couldn't speak with confidence on the details of that.
I'm not native englishe speaker, but for me Dolly Parton's answers was an example of smart englishe and not been provocated by envy, cheap woman.Thanx so much Professor.
Have you reacted to Al Pacino’s speech in Scent Of a Woman yet? To me, that’s the best monologue of all time. I’d love to watch your analyses :)
This really got me emotional! You did a great job controlling ur emotions..trust me i wouldn't have. The feel of these movies and the characters created by Stallone will remain unmatched, no matter how many similar movies come up like Creed etc. Btw, Mickey's speech in Rocky V is also very moving. "And nature is smarter than people think..."
yeah, no matter what people say about R5 you can't knock the Mick scene
This dialogue and speech is from the sixties's black and white series Mr. Ed the talking Horse. That was Mr Ed talking to Wilbur.
It’s a cold, dark place where this is filmed. The outside is wet and cold and you can see this when Rocky’s breath is seen.
Also, there is a dirty alley between them. They stop on either side of the alley and deliver their lines. It’s a powerful visual.
I’m not sure if you’ve broke down Pacino’s end monologue at the end of, Scent of a Woman, but that would be an amazing scene for you to analyze.
The son is asking him to dim his light because it hurts his eyes. How many of us are asked to dim our light by insecure people.
Fire!🔥💪
I remember when Stallone wanted to do Rambo 4 and Rocky 6, and a lot of people laughed at the idea as he was too old for either role, and turned the second greatest film for both franchises. Rambo 4 in the uncut version has also a great speech about war.
He was choked up
Great podcast. I would like to see a podcast on using poetry reading aloud to develop skills, such as slowing down your speech, the well-place pause.
Also, I would like to see Professor Lyon review some speeches of Bibi Netanyahu, who I think is one of the best public speakers.
I love it❤
You're on point
He mentioned comics which reminds me of a line from the Amazing Spider-Man comics "with great power, there must come great responsibility." More words to live by, IMO.
I didn't have a father and my mother was not able to raise me properly meaning "prepare me for life".
So I use these fictional characters to help me through this hell. God bless you Sly Stallone.
I live in Singapore if I ever talked to my parents like this I would get my butt kicked lol.😂
Good job
The way he emphasis beats is key here.
I should watch this movie again 🤔😎
My suggestion for this "stand alone scene" would be to highlight the moments of volume increase.
I am a parent and have given some lectures to my children. During the times of strong emotion, my first reaction is to increase my volume. My kids almost reflexively "tune me out" and retain nothing from the talks. In this scene, Rocky is able to keep the talk moving forward and increase his volume. Is this just movie magic or maybe I am using the wrong techniques.
Love your work, keep posting videos like this.
Well, I don't have any parenting advice but I do appreciate you sharing your experience. I personally would use a movie scene as a template for a parenting style but I like the way he gave the speech itself.
These are very interesting. I’d love to see a reaction of Robert Downey Juniors interview with the same man you reviewed interviewing Quentin Tarantino
Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman; hearing speech scene.
This is why the recent Creed movie needed Rocky, just a pre fight speech would have been awesome and enough for us Rocky fans
I'm looking forward to seeing Creed but I'm sure it won't be the same without Rocky.
Actually, don't think we need the "Creed" movies, at al !
Can you talk about rockys speech after the last fight in Rocky 4?
It's a great speech. I love that one. It's pretty short, though. I might just be a few sentences. I'll think about it. Thank you for the suggestions.
@alexanderlyon how the other one in Rocky Balboa that he gives to the people that didnt want to give him the license to fight
That's a good one too.
I feel like the son i live under a shadow and navigate through my life trying to make hits and just get by but i am afraid of getting hurt in order to try and reach my full potential
Sounds like my dad putting me back in my place.
Plus, he walks through his son at the end.
Yeah, nice touch!
@@alexanderlyon I was wondering why or the benefit?
I think it forces his son into action by making him move out of the way or stand strong in his place. His son yielded, so he needs more time.
Pathos. The emotion
often timesw I watch this just to top up my motivation
Can you do the President's speech from Independence Day. It always raises the hairs on the back of my neck!
Good suggestion!
This speech is unbelievable I’ve just split for my narcissistic wife everything was my fault I tryed to fix her over the years we were together have a child together she just turned round one day and said I ain’t happy I want a divorce so i moved out I lost all my friends during this marriage my hobbies myself I watched this loads and it picks you up only you can change you you can’t go around blaming other people or trying to change people or fix them I’m working on myself from now on for me and our child
Gotta do Inches by Al Pacino in the movie Any Given Sunday
How about something on love and caring?
Sounds great. Feel free to suggest a specific movie scene so I can look it up.
Anything from Good Will Hunting
Good suggestions!
are you related to alexander lyon?
??? That's my name.
@@alexanderlyon 😂sorry! I mean't are you related to Irene Lyon?
No, I don't know anybody by that name.
I had forgotten how unhealthy the son's words were. Glad you included that part in the clip.
You missed "Yo, Adrienne!"
Great line!
Al Pacino forget the name of movie but he played football American coach
I think Sylvester Stallone is an underrated actor.
Inspirating note
Fuck the pressure, you are the better version of your parents that's why you are in this nasty place. You gotta prove yourself and you have to if you do not you are gonna end up getting yourself down
