  • To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the K-28 Locomotives, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad hosted a special excursion powered by both operational K-28's 473 & 476. DSNG 476 was cut in as a mid-train helper to recreate the look and operation of a Silverton bound train on the Denver & Rio Grande Western.
This video, (Part 1) features footage from the northbound run to Silverton starting at MP 468.75 'Granite Point' near Rockwood.
Part 2 features footage from the following day for the return trip from Silverton to Durango. On Day 2, the mid-train helper was split into two separate trains for the majority of the day until the concluding runby on the Highline.
Part 2 will be uploaded on December 30.

Absolutely fabulous! What an exciting experience those folks had. Hearing those locomotives chuffin along is simply wonderful. I feel like a child watching this!

Great ride! Going to do this again this coming summer. Better than Disneyland

Very good here, with many great views, but there is no one aboard the passenger cars, even the Silver Vista.

Shocking to see such polluting black smoke in such a beautiful place

Were these two engines still running on coal? I thought they were all converted to oil burning by this point.

No, they are not burning coal. Both 473 and 476 have been converted to oil.
