    I have a question about the use of the peat moss itself. I’ve heard a lot of mixed answers online that the process of harvesting peat is destructive and there are more sustainable alternatives, one of which is the coconut coir you use. So I wanted to get you or your dad’s take on this.

    • @GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork

      As you can see it's very easy and you can customize it to your particular plants. Things like lettuce or cabbage you can increase the nitrogen sources since it is leaves that you're producing and if you're growing fruit like tomatoes, peppers, etc., you can increase the potassium for fruit size. Plus you know what you're growing is organic and good for you!

    Sorry to keep bothering you with questions, but got a few more. One, do you think this mix would work well for something like a potted citrus tree? Two, how often do you need to amend the soil or add fertilizer to it and what process do you follow? And do you just use drip irrigation for the watering like you do in ground?
    Thank you for your patience.

    What would you recommend as a substitute for animal waste products such as bone meal, etc.? Besides for contribution to confined animal operations, I don't know that I can really trust that those products are free of pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, and other pollutants. For example, a study of oyster shells from various locations showed that 100% of the shells were contaminated with PCBs and other pollutants.

    Another question. What about things like blueberry bushes? While reading up on the ingredients there are reports that blueberry bushes need a different type of mycorrhizae versus the regular one. Here I am, down the rabbit hole.
      So my apparent it’s phosphate not phosphorus that inhibits mycorrhiza:
      endo mycos are harmed by soluble phosphate but that shouldnt be an issue with an organic/non-organic phosphorous source. Phosphate bad (chemical salt from phosphoric acid). regular old 'P' good.

      Thanks for using the links! Much appreciated! Yes you certainly can use the mix for flowers though it's probably more than what they really need,I'd recommend using Neptune's rose 2-6-4 in addition. Maybe use Neptune's every other week.
      You really have to be careful about using any hay in your garden, I found that you can't trust farmers to always tell the truth about what chemicals they use on the hay crop,there's at least 3 forever chemicals they can use and boy you will have real troubles in your garden it takes years to get rid of the effects! But if you have good hay that's a great amendment for your soil, better still is good compost to get your biology rolling which is your most important factor in successful gardening!

      Bone char and bio char are a bit different. We have a commercial source for it and hope to sell it soon. If you leave it out of the mix you will be fine.

      To get charcoal, you need to do it a little differently. If you just burn them in an open fire, there will be only ashes left. There are lots of videos on how to make char.

    • @GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
      @GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork  7 месяцев назад +2

      No need for special water at all,people get all hung up on PH and that is sad since using organic amendments and having good biology the PH can take care of itself,I've never tested my soil for anything and have grown many more world record tomatoes than anyone in fact no one has ever grown more than 1 world record in their lifetime, so that's proof that ph can take care of itself. Hope you have a wonderful growing season, if you want you can reach out to me at biscuitridge2004@yahoo.com

    Is the gypsom fast acting? Also the borax…laundry detergent borax? lol. Where do you get bone char? I may be wrong but it seems BioChar bone meal may be different than bone char? Or are they the same?

    • @GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
      @GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork  5 месяцев назад +1

      The gypsum is rather slow,yes the boron is just the good old fashioned 20 mule team borax from the grocery store,just be careful how much you put on, it will be very toxic to your plants if too much is added!

    • @kenkerr7048
      @kenkerr7048 5 месяцев назад

      The reason I asked about the gypsum is I can only find fast acting gypsum. What brand is good for bone char? Or is biochar/ bone meal the same thing? A lot of these recipes are a little hard to find if just beginning/ learning

    • @GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
      @GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork  5 месяцев назад

      Fast acting is ok,I prefer the slow acting. No, bone char is not the same thing as biochar or bone meal,bone char is higher in phosphorus for better root development and blossoms. You can just use bone meal if you don't have bone char.

    Hello and thank you for the video. A couple of questions. 1 does this mix last the whole cycle, or is there top dressing required? 2 does this mix need to sit so the microbes break down the nutrients before using or is it ready to go? I want to start no till gardening so would i just ammend the top of the pot and water in each cycle with the fertilizers?

    • @GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
      @GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork  6 месяцев назад +1

      You will need to either add a liquid fertilizer every so often depending on what you're growing and or more amendments scratched into the top inch or two . No need to let it sit before using.

    This stuff is seriously starting to add up and hurt the wallet! What would be a few must haves and a few I could do without, to save on costs in terms of the additions

    • @GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
      @GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork  5 месяцев назад +4

      This mix is considered an ultimate mix for a reason! That is why there's so many goodies in it. If you want to make a less powerful mix you could reduce the amount of the goodies in relation to the base ingredients of the mix. Keep the amount of peat moss, Coco coir and perlite the same. Reduce all the other ingredients by half. That will save you some cost and still perform well. Since the ingredients are organic, you can't mess up too much as long as the ratios don't change drastically. Things like worm castings are very flexible, you could keep the amount of worm castings the same if you wanted. Also, the mineral dust like green sand and the basalt are not highly biologically active but feed the microbial activity in the soil so there is some room for error with those ingredients. The idea is to make sure you feed the biology in the soil, because that is what will make your soil nutrients/amendments available to your plants much more than just the raw amendments.

    • @jamestomlin5525
      @jamestomlin5525 4 месяца назад

      To cut down on costs, you can look into jadam and make your own microbial solution and fertilizer to add to your soils! You can even make inputs out of the dried additives to stretch them even further.
      But as they say, this really is a great starting mix! I did a familiar mix for my containers a few years back and they're still providing my plants with alot of nutrients.

    You've made compost, not soil which is a naturally occurring substance that takes hundreds of years to be created. It's a really bad idea to remove peat from the land, other more environmentally responsible Countries have all but stopped using it.
