Watch, observe and learn from Mother Nature! Good one George!
To add to people that have already stated it, this is not Cardamom. This is Alpinia nutans, or Cinnamon Ginger. The leaves of Cardamom do not smell when you rub your hands through them, and upon crushing release an only slightly-gingery smell that's barely detectable, and then they smell like grass cuttings. Cardamom also has hairs on the undersides of the leaves, and the leaves do not feel like vinyl like Cinnamon Ginger can. You'll also notice that there is strong diagonal pleating in Cardamom leaves that does not curve towards the mid vein, unlike the plant you see in this video. I'm in Florida in the USA and have the real plant, so I can confirm! Haha
Thanks for the heads up!
Thank you for sharing this, I believe you can eat the leaves, by cooking it in soups. or dry the leaves and ground it into powders for use in cakes. I live in Melbourne, and a friend gave me a seedling today. I will plant it in pots and if no flowers, I will just use the leaves. Cheers.
Great idea!
You have a very taste of gardening just like me yesterday i planted it i also collected a little afourer mandarin thanks
Great 👍
Awesome video mate.
You can use the leaves for cooking, tea, etc.
Amazing how similar the tubers/roots look to turmeric under the ground
How is true cardamon frost tender? Only false cardamoms and shell ginger types are frost Hardy
The title says cardamom , so don’t know why it takes 3 minutes to establish that the plant is cardamom. Can anyone recommend a garden channel that actually takes two minutes to explain two minutes of information instead of twenty.
Thanks for the video, I was planning to grow one too. Has it flowered/fruited in the last 5 years that you’ve grown it, if so how soon did it fruit after planting?
No flowers or fruit yet, if ever. Zone 10 and higher needed.
Will this seeds in US zone 6 (around OH, Indiana, Kentucky)?
Also, can I grow this from a green seed?
Not sure
Hi, I hv a cardamom in pot .. I have placed it to receive morning sun here in Melbourne..today is probably the warmest day .. noticed the leaves are curling? Is this normal?
Cardamon prefers mostly shade. I would keep them watered and shaded in summer.
First time I see bay laurel blossoms. Cardamom plants look like ornamental gingers to me.
You are right, they are also called false cardamom.
Hey! How is growing your cardamom now? I am curious to know it's updates!
It's good. Update coming during September.
@@RealLifeFruitopia waiting... I am also growing cardamomam at home from seeds! I am from india!
Hi George, do you still have this plant after 3 years from this video?
Yes, it's flourished into a bush. Grows well from cuttings.
@@RealLifeFruitopia I’m going to give it a try growing in Eastern Vic. Maybe some in a pot and some in the ground with overhead protection. Have you had any seed pods from it by now?
@marisaphoenix1893 No flowers or pods after 10 years.
Thank you for this video... can I grow this in a cooler climate?
Yes in a pot. It grows like ginger. Bring inside in winter.
What zone you are in
9b
Jeez man what don’t you have? You know you have your yard right when you can picture yourself camping in there for months at a time. This is what we should strive for.
I don't have my favourite fruit tree of all and never will unless I move to FNQ or Darwin :)
What are the leaves supposed to smell like on true cardamom? I have a cardamom or cardamom-related plant in a pot. I am not sure whether it is true cardamom (Elettaria cadamomum) or another ginger family (Zingiberaceae) species such as black cardamom (Amomum). The leaves of my plant look virtually identical to the leaves on yours, and while the leaves of my cardamom plant are aromatic, the aroma is not exactly the same as that of dried green cardamom seed pods commonly used as a spice. I have never had flowers on it, let alone seed pods!
When rubbed, the leaves on my plant smell almost identical to the spicy pods that you buy from the store. The variety I'm growing does flower and produce pods in the tropics.
How big is your yard?
Above average size 1970's suburban yard.
Having loading issues on this video or is it just me? The ads play...
Working fine for me.
Real Life Fruitopia I’m still having issues, can watch other vids just not this at about 1:30 in can skip forward it plays for a bit then won’t load again
@@pinball000 That's strange
Working fine for me too
Just you 😅
I see oxalis around the clump of your cardamom plants.
I'm from India, we use this spice in our desserts, dairy, even in our curries.
Adding cardamom with Black Pepper has been researched as a cure for Cancer cells by many Ayurveda specialists.
I put it in my tea everyday.
We use cardamom in cooking and teas. It holds a special place in our home. Thanks for sharing from one of our favorite countries.
What you're describing there is a cardamom ginger, AKA false cardamom & dwarf Cardamom. True cardamom, Elettaria cardamomum, should not have any fragrant to their leaves and are very tall plants, full grown size is 2 meters or more. False cardamom leaves are fragrant and can be used in tea/cooking but the fruits are nothing like the true cardamom, and therefore these two plants cannot be used interchangeably. It would be great if you could edit this video so then people who are looking for the true cardamom aren't getting the wrong information.
Done! Thanks for sharing 👍
This is probably false gingers or false cardamoms native to the mountains of Asia and Himalayas
This is not true cardamom
Indeed it can't grow in that climate if it was
Very painful to listen too
Thanks for trying!
