    Paul Mcgann's Tardis is my favourite, over all others.
    I love the homely design, but also because (I feel) it says a lot about the 7th Doctor. There's a certain feeling of loneliness in how large it is. I imagine that, whenever he left or lost Ace, he sort of lost the motivation to leave the Tardis and decided to make it a more personal environment.

    • @chriszone50
      @chriszone50 5 лет назад +6

      I completely agree, Mcgann had the best tardis, it even had a skylight so you could see space and the planets from a transparent ceiling. I was hoping the series 11 tardis would be a bit bigger and beautiful like the 8th doctor's Tardis, instead, we got the absolute opposite and instead of a skylight, we got a custard cream biscuit dispenser.

      I always said to myself if I had a Tardis that would be it, then I realised how unrealistic that would be because I am scared of the dark XD

      Sylvester and Paul’s console room is my third favourite console room after Eccleston and Tennant’s and Capaldi’s Series 9 console room. Sylvester and Paul’s is my third favourite for the exact same reasons.

      I'm afraid I have to disagree I think I would like it more if it didn't look to me as though someone has taken the tardis console and put it slap bang right in the middle of someone's living room , I don't mind the console its self but it's the whole look of all the homely stuff in one room I don't like , I like imagining that the tardis has other multiple rooms that these thi g could be in xx

    Found your page by accident, but I have to say it's a joy to watch and listen to such articulate and erudite commentators! I have sampled some of the squillions of classic story DVD reviews by other various Fan RUclipsrs and honestly, they've been the most painfully tedious experiences of my life - all low, monotone, humourless voices telling me about the DVD authoring specs on the packaging in excruciating detail - I really couldn't bear it! You guys are fun - clearly knowledgeable - and I am going to search out more reviews and rankings! Thank you!!

    Got to say even though I don't like Matt Smith and Jodie Whitakers Tardis console I love the Christopher Eccelston Tardis. It may be that I hold a nostalgia towards it as it's the Tardis I grew up with. But I think it remains faithful to the original look but takes the Tardis in a new direction. It feels like a broken down spaceship and like the Doctor has had to repair it and replace parts over the years and it feels very aged. I also like the organic quality in this Tardis because it feels like a living being but still like a spaceship.

    Great video and solid choices. My own list:
    1. 1st Doctor's (1963 / Adventure in Time and Space, with all white console variations not counted);
    2. 7th/8th Doctors' (TV Movie);
    3. 9th/10th Doctors' (it was my first, however I definitely prefer 10's "brighter" version i.e. Series 3-4);
    4. 12th Doctor's (Series 8-10, with Series 7B not counted because I much prefer the orange lighting);
    5. 5th/6th/7th Doctor (The Five Doctors et. al);
    6. 3rd Doctor's (Planet of the Daleks et. al);
    7. 4th Doctor's (Pyramids of Mars et. al, including secondary control room);
    8. 11th Doctor's (The Eleventh Hour - sorry, it's a cluttered mess that tried to capitalise on what made the previous room great and failed. The only thing I like is the time rotor);
    9. 13th Doctor's (no excuse - it's the only truly awful design!).
    In short, great but I have to ask - why didn't you include the War Doctor's interior from the 50th? I really liked the mixture between

    Awesome video - would totally agree on nearly all of the rankings of the console rooms you noted! Capaldi's definitely my fav of the new series but would even take Jonathan's idea of Colin/Sylv's tardis as my favourite over all. Would love to hear your opinions on the police boxes as you noted plus even the 'other' rooms inside the Tardis, e.g. bedrooms, zero room, wardrobes etc. Could watch videos like this all day! Amazing stuff

    My ranking:
    1. Capaldi/Smith Tardis. Looks best in the Capaldi Era with the bookshelves and stuff.
    2. Paul McGann Tardis
    3. Eccleston/Tennat Tardis
    4. Tom Baker secondary control room season 14 Tardis.
    5. The Davison/Baker/McCoy Tardis
    6. Matt Smith's first Tardis
    7. The Original Hartnell/Throughton Tardis
    8. Tom Bakers final Tardis
    9. War Doctors Tardis
    10. Tom Bakers first Tardis season 13
    11. Jodie Whittakers Tardis
    12. Jon Pertwee's main Tardis
    13. The Time Monster Tardis

    Interesting discussion. I agree the original Hartnell console room is the iconic Tardis. The design was based on the anechoic (EMC) chamber used to test microphones at the BBC. For more examples Google image search "Sound Proof Room".

  • @hgwells1899
    @hgwells1899 5 лет назад +10

    It's not just 13's ugly great stalagmite time-rotor going up and down but also the waggling tops of the pillars, where they're crooked over like fingers or the leg-ends of a dying spider. Not a good look, shown so far as I know only once, that fact suggesting despite the time and effort in producing the effect, maybe they'll ditch at least this pointless and unnoticed add on next season.
    11's TARDIS interior left me cold until that scene (in the Doctors Wife?) in which he was harnessed beneath the console with his steampunk goggles like a mad scientist. A look I favour myself.
    8's had the scale and grandeur, a romantic notion much like his own, of boundless dimensions and time travel with no finite edge, and I loved it.
    Ultimately it's Tom Bakers console room for me. That white roundel'd room IS the TARDIS and even it's sound, that background hum, the doors electronic opening whirr...puts me right back inside it every time I hear it now in a Big Finish audio (as do 5's and 6's). The engine of my childhood imagination re-echoing, alive and brimming with wild impossibilities once more, across all the space and time of the intervening years (relatively speaking, of course ;)

    My dream for Jodie would've been a very homey TARDIS, kind of like Capaldi's but wooden instead of metal, like a house. Her doctor is very inviting, and it could've been a place for her and her "friends" to hang out. They can't even sit down in the actual new one!

    Personally I prefer the TARDIS console that Mike Tucker designed for season 27 (in the end it was used for Doctor Who Night) something about the console hovering really appeals to me and that it would have been the first to incorporate the time rotar to the ceiling. The Titan Comics’ version is a nice improvements with the gold / ivory roundels and like with a few consoles have a vast amount of space.
    Some others to mention:
    The Junk Console from The Doctor’s Wife - a slight similarity between consoles 63-89 but in hindsight not the best.
    The Victorian Parlour Mark I from Virgin New Adventures - an early version of the TV movie console where the time rotor was not connected to the ceiling and had a wall of roundels.
    The Edifice from BBC Eighth Doctor Adventures - took the appearance of a gigantic four-dimensional Flower of Remembrance. It was composed entirely of bone.

    Just wondering what about the other console room that wasn't used, the unused desktop theme😀
    Also would be cool to design a custom Tardis (INT/EXT) build for example you could have it as mixture of classic and modern put together also have it as a competition of doctor who Tardis designs and a video how to build it step by step. How cool would that be 😀👍

And I do think the big double doors was a great piece because it's your heading from normal world into Narnia. lol

    1. Hartnell & Troughton’s TARDIS (Default)
    - Perfection.
    2. Capaldi’s TARDIS (Neon v2)
    - Very Sci-Fi and looks gorgeous.
    3. McGann’s TARDIS (Gothic)
    - So grand and homey.
    4. Davison, C.Baker & McCoy’s TARDIS
    - Very Iconic and very 80's
    5. T. Baker’s Season 15 TARDIS
    - Lovely
    6. M. Smith’s 2nd TARDIS (Neon v1)
    - A vast improvement, but bare.
    7. T. Baker’s Secondary TARDIS (Wooden)
    - Overhated, I like it, but console is too small.
    8. Pertwee’s Season 8 TARDIS
    - It's okay
    9. Whittaker’s TARDIS (Crystal)
    - It feels TOO dark.
    10. Davison’s TARDIS
    - meh...
    11. John Hurt’s TARDIS (Mix)
    - It felt too clustered.
    12. M. Smith’s 1st TARDIS (Brass & Glass)
    - Felt too artsy.
    13. Eccleston & Tennant’s TARDIS (Coral)
    - It just feels too organic.

    I could never choose a favorite between Hartnell's and Peter/Colin/Sylv's. A good TARDIS interior, to me, should always convey the sense that it is both a space ship and a home, and both of those versions do that phenomenally.
    And honestly, it's for that reason that I just can't get behind fan favorites like the TV Movie and Tom's Secondary console rooms. Those two, while beautiful in their own way, just don't look like the inside of a space ship to me.

    I think maybe the original consoles intension was to look white on screen intending that the console was white but as it came around to the pertwee era the producers didn't want to repaint the console piece probably because it would have taken too long. 1. The crystal pillars moving. I’m not a fan of it as I find it very distracting.
    2. No hatstand. The hatstand hasn’t been in the TARDIS since 2011 and I want to see it return.
    3. No phone, I wish there was a phone on the back of the doors.
    Apart from that, I think it looks quite small compared to the other NuWho consoles and that it starts quite low down. Not a personal favourite of mine.

    If I had to rank them I’d go:
    1. Capaldi’s TARDIS
    2. Hartnell and Troughton’s TARDIS
    3. McGann’s TARDIS
    4. Tom Baker’s first TARDIS
    5. Davison-McCoy’s TARDIS
    6. Whittaker’s TARDIS
    7. Smith’s Second TARDIS
    8. Smith’s First TARDIS
    9. Pertwee’s TARDIS
    10. The Secondary Console Room
    11. Tom Baker-Davison’s TARDIS
    12.. Hurt’s TARDIS
    13. Eccleston-Tennant’s TARDIS
    14. Pertwee’s fishbowl TARDIS

    The new TARDIS is the worst for me too. My faves are Capaldi s9 onwards and Tennant's when lit brightly. Smith's first and the cold, blue, stark second before the Capaldi rejig were bad for me. But not as bad at the spider hand gross crystal one we have now...and I love crystals.

    The main difference between new who and classic who tardis are that in the classic series the tardis is treated like a machine and is often regarded by the 1st doctor as "the ship" and in New who they treat the tardis like a living thing which I prefer personally I grew up with new who so to me that the way it should be for me I'm not a massive fan of jodies interior but love the exterior, I don't like how they have the full police box showing at the doors as I think it slightly takes away the magic and the illusion of the tardis being bigger on the inside plus I think it looks a bit ugly.I also love my tardis consoles to have loads of buttons and switches and nozzles and levers instead of just having the levers and taps and bells, that's my personal opinion. I don't really like the 1996 movie tardis interior either for me it just feels like someone stuck the console in the middle of someone's living room which I really don't like because I don't like how the homely stuff is in one room , it doesn't feel like the main console room to me. My favourite of all time has to be the 11th's 2nd/12th doctors console I just love it so much I love the gallifreyen writing on the time rotta with the spirals that spin round when the tardis is in flight, just wish Smith had this tardis for longer possibly after series 5 as I feel he had the other one for too long in my opinion xx

    For me the worst is that weird wooden tardis interior from tom bakers era. With a tiny little console thing in the middle, just weird why they did that😂 I love the walls and the rest, but the console could be better.

    I wouldn’t mind the new TARDIS console’s mechanical stuff instead of buttons if they were more like Ten and Eleven’s, where they actually took up space and felt like actual machinery. Thirteen’s console’s moving components feel too gimmicky and don’t actually FEEL tactile. Each segment of the console looks so bare, with gaping swaths of empty coral slab, then tiny little trinkets you can flick a bit? If I only had one word to describe this TARDIS console, it would be “flimsy”. You can make it immaculate or you can make it a patchwork, but I want to be impressed looking at this thing, not feel like the Doctor bought three or four knickknacks to put on her weirdly-shaped table.

    Least favourite is Smith's first console room. Looks too childish and weird for my liking.

    Completely agree. Console room seems to be one of the worst aspects of the show now! With Eccleston/Tennant's TARDIS the space really worked despite the clunky feel, this one feels really crampt and TOO DARK AGAIN. Prefer brighter console rooms.

    I’ve said I’ll give the new one a series to see if I change my opinion of it but with 2 eps left to go I can’t see it happening. I still hate the new design.
