  • Schmidt-Gaden's wife is responsible for the whole organization /management of the choir. She orders all the costumes...This can be difficult at times, because businesses change their product line and don't have the required sweatshirts anymore..
She makes sure that all the sheet-music is organized and available. She writes newsletters to the parents and even then not all the parents receive the letters, because some boys forget to give them to their parents, so she needs to call them... The whole organization is very complex and there is always work.
Music is dominant in the whole house.. At the Carl Orff Institute in Salzburg (Austria) the Schmidt-Gadens met. Since then they are an inseparable team, both on a private basis and job related. Nearly every travel of the choir from Bavaria to rome, paris to Chicago she accompanied her husband .
    Cut to the 2 choir:
Those boys are over 2 years members of the Tölzer boys choir and now reached the second choir. Dietrich Bednarz is the conductor, who was once a Toelzer boy himself. In all of the 4 Tölzer choirs over 200 boys are singing. 6 conductors and pedagogues are overlooking the children. Each Year choir 1+2 and the soloists of the choir have more then 250 performances.
Then Bednarz is interviewed. He says that choir 2 is the most difficult choir , because here the children need to become ready for the 1 choir (the concert choir).
And around Christmas they are not singing as the 2nd choir, instead they are singing as the Toelzer Knabenchor and even receive the same money like the concert choir does. So the boys must be as good as the main choir.
That's always stressful for everyone, but in the last year he managed that all boys stayed on and the reached a great level of singing. But to get the boys there you have to encourage them...and infect? them with ambition...
    Schmidt-Gaden:
Every Year...around eastern... This year 30 new boys were accepted to the concert choir. The new ones are called "Tribis"- The word is an invention for the children and originated from the german word Trittbrettfahrer (free riders)
The new members of the St. Thomas Boys choir were called Aspiranten (aspirants/candidates) and weren't allowed to sing with the choir for a whole year, they just were allowed to listen. (Today this might be different)
Schmidt-Gaden found this not right.. The new ones are allowed to sing, but they are tested in the rehearsals...:
Plus Tribis (means everyone) minus tribis (without the new choir members) and einzeln (solo/single) Every rehearsel 20-30 boys are singled out and tested...The other boys are criticising their mistakes and that's how the soloists are selected.
Frederic Jost one of the 1 soloists is shown...The 1 soloists receive their voice lessons from Schmidt-Gaden himself. Frederic sings " You dog, you ugly dog...(free translation, but close) and is told to do this with a friendly face...Than Schmidt Gaden explains that in 50's/60's boys didn't sing in opera productions...During the Nazi Regime boys did, but this practice was discontinued...Only the Regensburger Domspatzen sang once in the opera of Salzburg after world war 2 ...The 3 boys of the magic flute were performed by young women of the opera school.
But 2 conductors (Reger (?) and Sawallisch) had the idea to use boys instead of young women and tried soloists of the Toelzer boys choir. Since then Schmidt-Gaden received world wide requests. Today Toelzer's already performed in 2000 magic flute operas.

Maybe...you can see Alexander L in the beginning of this docemantary...but someone has told that Alexander is a very shy boy, so maybe he didnt want to be in the show by him self.
