- The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is India's first six-lane concrete, high-speed, access controlled tolled expressway. It spans a distance of 94.5 km connecting Mumbai, the administrative capital of Maharashtra state and the financial capital of India, with Pune, an industrial and educational hub. The expressway, which was opened to public in 2002, introduced new levels of speed and safety in automobile transportation to Indian roads. It is one of India's busiest roads.
The expressway has reduced the travel time from Mumbai city to Pune to about two hours. It has supplemented the older Mumbai-Pune National Highway (NH 48) which had become extremely congested and accident-prone. The expressway starts at Kalamboli (just before Panvel) and ends at Dehu Road (just before Pune). It cleaves through the scenic Sahyadri mountain ranges through passes and tunnels. It has six interchanges: Shedung, Chowk, Khalapur, Lonavala, Kusgaon and Talegaon.
The expressway has two carriageways, each with three concrete lanes, separated by a central divider and a tarmac or concrete shoulder on either side. The expressway handles about 43,000 PCUs daily, and is designed to handle up to 1,000,000 PCUs. This road has improved transport between these two metro cities.

@@KeepOnDriving The zebra markings on the side barrier looks ugly. Why don't they just paint it with reflective white color instead of black and white stripes. Just white paint can help detect pedestrian or animal in the background. The patterns makes you feel tired. Even watching driving videos makes you feel hallucinated.(Did NHAI came up with this idea based on research or they are doing it because of someone's idea or recommendation)

There are 2 super major problem with this particular expressway. 1st, there were no proper fencing on the on the sides. The sides were absolutely open anyone can enter from the side especially an animal just imagine going at 100+ speed and suddenly something popped in front of you. It is absolutely risky driving on an expressway with no proper fencing and 2nd problem is there were lot of instances were road was turn was very extreme almost to 90 degrees I usually drive at 120+ on Ahmedabad-Vadodara expressway and the road is almost straight. So yeah those extreme turns were risky for someone driving at high speed. NHAI should have tried to made it more straight without lot of extreme turns. Except these, road is good and well made. I think Mumbai-Pune expressway is great as it is made through the Western Ghats with many twists and turns and 5-6 tunnels through the hills whereas Yamuna Expressway is made on plain areas. Driving experience was also good on MPE because drivers have better road etiquettes than they do in NCR or UP.
