This portrait retouching tutorial is of a photo of Caleb Negassa, a good buddy who has helped with the Film Fundraising course. This photo was shot for our Photography Masterclass live demonstration lessons by Sam Shimizu-Jones.
Basic Steps for Editing Portraits:
Crop to your desired size/aspect. Use 1:1 aspect for most social media profile pics.
Fix white balance
Fix exposure with basic tone sliders
Adjust saturation/vibrance
Add or adjust contrast with Tone Curve
Add more style by de-sharpening areas around eyes, mouth, hair, and parts of faces with radial filter
Sharpen and brighten eyes with adjustment brush
Whiten teeth with adjustment brush
Remove blemishes with clone tool
Brighten sleepy eyes (skin beneath eyes)
Add vignette (optional)
Add grain (optional)
These are my basic steps. Of course some portraits don't need all of these edits. Some portraits need more. Sometimes I adjust HSL or split toning settings - adding yellow to highlights and blue to shadows - to give photos more of a style.
KEY TIP: Make Your Eyes Pop
My biggest advice is to make sure eyes are sharp and bright (not too bright). This will make any portrait pop more!

When I created the mask around the eye area for some reason my brush selection is not showing next to the edit button, do you know what might be the reason for this?
Good stuff. For portrait editing do you always go down the list adjustments in the same order? Trying to make sense of how to start using Lightroom.
great tutorial. I would also remove some of the blemishes especially the one under his left eye
im happy to thank you nice vido
Great lesson but Lightroom is fairly complex. I need to learn the "hotkeys".
nice very nice
well done.
Simple yet very well explained at almost any level.
how would you save this edited photo?
When I apply the radial filter the picture get a white cast all over except for where the the radial is located. Any suggestions from anyone?
Check the sliders, I expect exposure is to the right. If you want to change the area affect click on the "invert mask" button at the bottom
THANX
Hi how do I just brighten or darken a specific area lets say the pic is
well lite but the model face is to bright and i want to tone that down,
how do i do that thanks
dodge and burn
Use the radial filter to select the area, use "invert mask" to change to inside/outside selected area
the end result looks under exposed to me, isn't it?
I’m so confused!!!
This is a first. I've never seen eyes made clearerr by brightening the entire area with the radial filter even over the nose. His eyes are no longer sharp. Shame!
