  • The wisdom and purpose of sending man to this world is to know the Creator of the universe, to believe in Him, and to worship Him and gain the spiritual maturity and awareness worthy of paradise.
Just as faith requires supplication as an absolute means, and just as human innate nature, in other words, fitrah strongly demands it, Almighty Allah states in the Quran:
"Say, 'My Lord would not care for you if it were not for your supplication. The Beloved Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) urged the importance of supplication in many hadiths.
Prayer is at the centre of our daily lives. There is one very important point of supplication. Today we will address it, in shaa Allah, that is the importance of halal food in acceptance of our supplications.
Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported, "Once, when I recited the verses of the Qur'an, 'O you people! Eat of what is on earth, lawful and good' (2.168) in the presence of the Prophet, peace be upon him. Sa'd ibn abi Waqqas got up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Ask Allah to make me one whose supplication is heard.' At this the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, 'O Sa'd, consume lawful things and your supplications will be heard, and by Him in Whose hands is the soul of Muhammad, when a man puts into his stomach a morsel of what is forbidden his prayers are not accepted for forty days, and a servant of Allah whose body is nourished by usury or by what is forbidden becomes more deserving of the Hellfire."
In another hadith, Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: He mentioned [the case] of a man who, having journeyed far, is dishevelled and dusty, and who spreads out his hands to the sky saying “O Lord! O Lord!,” while his food is haram (unlawful), his drink is haram, his clothing is haram, and he has been nourished with haram, so how can [his supplication] be answered?
Yes, these warnings in the hadiths are priority issues that we should consider as we are in dire need of supplications.
Mawlana Jalaluddeen Rumi underlines the significance of being mindful about what one eats and drinks with an anecdote in his Mathnawi:
“This dawn, inspiration has been cut off from me. I couldn’t receive any occurrences to my heart and no flashes of thoughts arrived either while I was writing. I realised then that some suspicious food had entered my body. Because both knowledge and wisdom spring from halal food. Love and compassion are the fruits of halal food. If ignorance comes from a morsel, know that that morsel is either suspicious or haram.
The body that is nourished with impure food gets sick and diseased; and the spirit, soul, and heart are badly influenced with ignorance and ill manners by the sick and diseased body.
Today, we pay a lot of attention to the ingredients of the foods we eat, and if they contain gluten or if they anything harmful, we do avoid them and we should avoid them.
In addition this, we should also realise that the body is the home of the soul, rooh. The soul is the foundation, and we need to pay much more attention to our soul and our eternal lives in the hereafter than we do to our body and our short worldly life.
The food that we eat also has great impact on our spirituality and moral education. It is mentioned in Imam Nursi's autobiography that when he was young, he memorised the sacred texts very rapidly with the sheikh in the old madrasas, and his sheikh marvelled at the speed of his memorisation in his young age. He wanted to visit Saeed’s parents to find out what could be the reason for this wonderous ability. When he arrived at their village, he asked about Little Saeed's father and was told that he was on his way back from grazing his sheep. When he came in, he noticed that all the sheep had leather bridles that muzzled their mouths. The sheikh asked him curiously why the bridles were there. Saeed's father, Sufi Mirza, said "I graze my sheep outside the village and pass orchards and cultivated lands of other people on my way, because I am afraid that my sheep will eat from other people’s land which would be haram for them. This is the sustenance of me and my family, so I am careful about it not containing any kind of haram.”
The sheikh was amazed by this sensitive and thoughtful behaviour. Then they went together towards the house to learn more about Saeed's family. The Sheikh asked Saeed's mother about the speed of his memorisation, and she said, “During my pregnancy for Saeed, I never stepped on foot without having made wudu, and after he was born, I never breastfed him without getting up and making wudu first.”
The Sheikh knew that this was because Saeed’s parents did not want to feed Saeed with any haram or impure food whatsoever, so they tried their absolute best at providing him with only halal and pure food. What a wonderful sensitivity and thoughtfulness!

Abu Razin (ra) reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The parable of the believer is that of a bee. It only consumes what is purely good, and it only produces what is purely good.”
