    It's been a good long while since I heard Chris say "it's a whole new thing." That must've been back with the P1 and 918!
    His take on the whole project has given me a new appreciation for it. The One sounds for all the world like it was a waking nightmare from start to finish (and apparently might still be so), but if Mercedes-AMG of all people had thrown in the towel we'd all say it's impossible to put an F1 engine in a road car... but instead that _have_ done it, which is awesome.

      @adogmcdizzle 2 года назад +7

      @@jsleeio You're forgetting the AMG One did it's lap in winter, in poor conditions with the track damp in some areas and on I believe Kesselchen corner about 3:15 into the official RUclips Video lap record, it had to lift because there was mud on the circuit from 250kph to 200kph, normally that's a flat out corner especially in that car. So no, your opinion is wrong, the fact it was 14s quicker than GT3RS in those conditions is insane, and if they did a dry run no doubt it's got another 10s on the board, with ease.

    Chris is the best part of top gear now. The one is truly a one of a kind car. The issues you got where probably due to the car being at full throttle for a couple days in a row. An engine like that can't be ran at maximum for days in a row even though its been sorted for the road. But how they have put that engine into a car that good with air con radio etc etc and it's that fast is crazy. Someone will remove all of that and purley have it as a race car which will be crazy fast.

    • @v0ldy54
      @v0ldy54 2 года назад +2

      @@lovelehstuff the AMG One was said having 700ish kg of downforce (they referred to "half the car weight" at a time when the claimed weight was 1400kg, so maybe it's actually 850 considering the real weigth), which is really not that much for a car that heavy (1700kg).
      The standard T.50 already has a better power/weight ratio than the AMG1 (plus even considering poower alone it's not that far off, especially once the electrics run out on the One) and probably a batter downforce/weight ratio too, however it's still made to be an actually usable road car unlike the 1 so it might not be enough to beat it on a track (but it surely wouldn't be far off on specs alone).
      T.50s is a different animal, it's even lighter (852kgs is just INSANE), slightly more powerful (with 725hp it's LMP2 power/weight territory) and with tons more downforce.
      They said (and considering Murray's LITERAL track record I believe them) they actually LIMITED the peak downforce to about 1500kg, and with a huge aero efficiency being a fan car.
      You know what that means? That it can corner at 2.5g, there is just no way the AMG One is faster than that thing, even actual GT3 race cars wouldn't be able to compete with it in any aspect.

    I spent a lot of time in the AMG ONE over the last few years and the biggest issues for me was the noise in the cabin yet it being so quiet outside, that’s a strange experience because you can’t appreciate just how loud the thing is inside. Also I found the seat too upright so it got uncomfortable almost instantly. I think these cars outperform the tyres they come with, it would be very interesting to put a set of slicks on and see how it responds.
    In saying the above, I do think this will be one of those cars that will be more appreciated in 10+ years. The feat of what they’re trying to do is incredible however I’d have personally preferred someone to have taken an earlier F1 engine like a screaming V10 and dump it in a road chassis.
    The GMA cars and the Valkyrie are the best sounding production cars at the moment. Cosworth are geniuses.

      It's still way too early to claim victory. Do keep in mind that this was still a factory prototype and we're yet to see how it fares in the real world. I'm not questioning or sidelining the achievements of the team at AMG, not for one second, but how such a highly strung machine stays relatively reliable is something we'll have to wait n see. Mercedes themselves have been quite unsure of the feasibility n reliability of the engine and is why they repeatedly sent out feelers out to and even flied in those who put down deposits to ask them if they would opt any other powerhouse instead. I believe they were given V12 n V8 options as well. That's also the reason why they ended up with quite a few cancellations. The fact that they informed US buyers at the last minute that it can only be used under _show and display_ led to further cancellations.

    Not that my opinion matters and not that they won't sell them all...but it's hard to remember the last time I cared less about a new supercar than this one (I guess some of the "me too" all electric vaporware fall in that category). Very odd to work so hard to get that engine to work when nobody particularly loves the current F1 powertrains (even if they are incredible technical showcases).
    Frankly, it doesn't even seem like it's moved the needle much beyond the 918. Put the 918 on custom developed versions of the latest rubber and it seems like they'd probably be in a similar ballpark. Perhaps I'm just jaded by them blowing the initial projections by so much that it seems like a complete failure in my eyes.

    Some consumer advice :
    - if you want the best on the road: buy a Carrera GT or an LFA or a T.50
    - if you want speed on a race track : buy a Bentayga, a trailer and a race car

    The whole 'F1 Engine in a road car' is a bit of a fallacy. Pretty much everything about it is different to the F1 PU other than the basic block and configuration. The F1 track spec ICE is actually producing more in the region of 800-900bhp on it's own (compared to the 560bhp in the :One) as the MGU-K is only allowed to deploy around 160bhp (and only in short bursts) and the MGU-H doesn't actually deploy any motive power directly as it is used as an anti-lag system to keep the turbo spooled in low rev situations. Having a ~600bhp formula 1 car for most of the lap just doesn't make sense!
    The hybrid element is so much more powerful on the :One compared to the race car, with the 2 extra motors driving the front wheels making up most of the difference in power output compared to the F1 spec ICE.
    Yes, the headlines are the same. But beneath the skin, the :One is a whole different animal.
