    A confirmed look at the Motley Crue backing track rig. I know the person who builds the rigs and gives this private demo. The program is MOTU Digital Performer. The same program I use, programming and running backing tracks for some of the biggest artists on the planet.

    This is pretty standard now days with metal bands. Most play to a click with in ears and have timecode for all the lights as well as midi changes for guitar patches. They also throw in the extra tracks that are on the record like synths, maybe backing vocals, the other guitar bits, all the stuff that makes the album sound big and huge so they can play live. Its not cheating, its for the performance and show that people are paying a decent amount of money to see. The band still needs to play in time to the click track. It's just the way things are done now days, its more efficient and the performance is better. The band is still playing the songs live.

    I would be interested in seeing what kind of rigs other bands use. I have read and heard that this is standard operating procedure these days actually. I guess this is why seeing up and coming bands in smaller venues and even clubs is so cool, you see them really playing the music and it may sound like a garage band, but sometimes, depending on what kind of music it is, that may be the main draw. It seemed like this rig simply gave the music a fuller sound that may not be possible outside a studio setting or without several extra musicians and what not. In the end, a Crue show is a spectacle and it's kinda expected to a certain degree, ever since they began with the rotating drums and pyrotechnics and what not so they continue in that vein and the technology has really upped the game quite a bit!

    • @mixhits9306
      @mixhits9306  Год назад +3

      To be honest, just about every touring band/artist uses playback to some degree. When it comes to pyro, it keeps the show very safe by firing everything at the exact right time. It's also what keeps the video/lyrics on screen in sync. The problem is that it gives a sterile feel to 4 piece rock bands with all live instruments. On a, let's say, Usher tour, there are a lot of programmed tracks from the studio sessions that are used in conjunction with his live band. Thanks for watching!!

    I'm a professional musician and yes, this is 100% how things work today. I play with multiple acts and have been using "backing tracks" for years. You want your drummer to play to a click. If they do not it is impossible to use tracks (unless there is a constant time being kept by a shaker or whatever within the track itself). For my artists we do not use tracks for any vocals or any of the instruments that are actually on stage. I see no issue with any of this whatsoever. I do see an issue with using vocal tracks however. Please don't hold it against bands that use tracks as I do as the goal of this is only to enhance the show experience that you are receiving. It's the major "artists" who get up there and lip sync the whole show all the while their raw soundboard feed sounds like a grunting cat trying to keep from using up it's 9th life that pisses me off.

    There tends to be a lot of misconceptions on what the difference between a backing track is and what playback is so let me break it down for those who are curious.
    Backing tracks are used for additional instruments like pianos, synths and aux percussion that the band could not recreate live without literally having to hire additional members and buying the gear to go along with it. Playback is a prerecorded track of what the band is supposed to be playing but are not and they're miming to the track. This is exactly like lip-syncing. THIS is bullshit. No one wants to see anyone simply pretending that they are performing. Backtracks on the other hand are more than welcome in my book. They allow the bands to keep costs down while still delivering on the production side of their live performance.
    TLDR: Backtracks enhance the production of a live performance. Playback is the equivalent of lip-syncing; pretending to perform while a prerecorded live show plays through the speakers.

There are two guitars in the songs, so either get Mick’s rhythm guitar from a backing track or you get another guitarist to join onstage. And I’d bet you’d think it’s worse to have another guitarist join them, because then it LOOKS like they can’t play their own songs by themselves. I am a drummer and I play in bands that play this kind of music. I currently play in a band that plays hard rock from 80s that does not use backing tracks or click. We just try to play clean and methodical and not get drunk. Of course the tempo moves a smidge up and down and it sounds live like it should. The expectations are too high. Because fans are able to watch videos of live performances on RUclips and critique every imperfection it causes these pro bands to use this tech. No one wants a bar band to play better then a seasoned 80s band with massive success. They have to try and make themselves sound perfect (except for Vince) to set themselves apart from amateurs. For example, Tommy Lee is seasoned and he has lived the life of a million kings. He probably doesn't practice every day like a teenage kid trying to get famous. He has the hits, history, money, and world level gigs under his belt to prove himself. He just won't be able to play with perfect tempo like a young up and coming dedicated discipline MIT grad drummer who plays to a click every waking hour. He isn't a technician. He isn't a drum scientist trying to play drum clinics for musicians and show off his progressive jazz chops. And he is getting old. And he has smoked and partied. Drums and vocals are the first ones to show their age. Finger movement instruments are less physical and more tedious in the hands and the hands have lots control from brain input. Minus arthritis of the hands...you can play finger instruments longer in age span. This is probably why Mick can still play all of this live despite his body hurting. What really sucks is that if you are the musical on stage performing with this technology....you aren't having fun like the audience is. The band (or mostly drummer) has to hear that monotonous click is in ear the whole show. It's god awful. And if the band gets off the rails and you are the drummer locked in to the click you can't real those other guys in. The whole band is probably hearing that click just to be safe. It's miserable. These monster level bands would be better off playing 1 big show a week and preparing for the show the day before the show. Play it live and be rested up. The audience needs to be more forgiving and allow the bands to play live. Judge it for what it is. I always liked the rock bands that played with wildness. Van Halen sounds raw live....EVH experimented in the live songs and didn't always stick to playing it like the record. The 1980s drunk and wild VH would be critiqued on RUclips today as being sloppy. But back then....it seems normal and good to the audience because they expected a raw live sound and if it's a wild band like VH or Motley....it would be drunk and raw. Oh well. We are in the age of digital perfection. Now rap, country, and pop....it's to be expected that is fake. That stuff is not viewed for the musicianship (with exception).

    Ehhhhh, I don't think this means what you're thinking it means. Almost every band these days uses the type of system this gentlemen just walked through. Things like click tracks, canned orchestral parts, guitar effects, vocal harmonies etc. are all typically run through computers so that the live performance can match the quality of the album. You might consider it cheating but nothing this guy just said insinuated any of the musicians were not actually playing their parts, which is what Motley Crue is being accused of. Having "canned" Mick Mars solos etc. Or Vince lip synching. That is not at all what this guy just said.
    To not use the type of setup this guy is talking about would essential mean that you couldn't have pre-programmed lighting, pyrotechnics or even pre-recorded piano/orchestra parts. Because no matter how good a drummer is, if they do not have a metronome or "click track" playing, the tempo of the song is going to slightly drift and then your pyro, lights and pre-recorded parts wouldn't line up in the song.

Also I had a conversation with the live FOH mix engineer for Tocque and seems they also utilize MOTU DP for live tracks , what is it about DP in general that may be better than PT or any other DAW for live tracks , likely small potatoes I would assume , they are all pretty standard now adays?

    • @mixhits9306
      @mixhits9306  Год назад +1

      @@bobco5 Hey Bob! Thank you for stopping by! I've tried every DAW for playback and I'll tell you why I chose DP. Both Pro Tools and Logic used in playback are linear. Meaning, your entire show is in one session and all the songs can share some of the same tracks/channels. For example, if you make a volume automation/fader/eq change for one song, you could inadvertently be making a change on another instrument 6 songs down the timeline. Also, both PT and Logic would be using a marker system to jump around from song to song. DP uses what's called a "chunk" system. It allows each song to be it's own "session" within a project that gives you the option to makes changes to said song without affecting anything else. It's like having 15 sessions open at once that you can easily switch between in real time, as well as having a setlist that you can change on the fly and also gives you the option to automatically pause each song upon ending, chaining some together as well other helpful options. I feel as DP and Abelton Live are the two most widely used systems for playback. I own and am comfortable with every DAW out there, but always try to choose what's best for the job and think DP is the best all around for playback, control of video, lighting, pyro/fx, but to be 100% honest, I would never use it to write, produce, or mix. Logic is my go to for writing, and Pro Tools for recording/mixing. I may have to do a PT vs DP playback video in the near future. I hope you have a great day!

    It’s a glorified click track, which is used on just about any stadium show, as it’s impossible to hear each other and stay in time. It had nothing to do with being a good musician. The backing vocals are the only parts being “faked”, other than an occasional additional guitar part, due to them being a one guitar player band. The show would be virtually impossible without this, without being a disaster. Been done for decades, the tech has just gotten better, and you really don’t want it to stop. The shows would suck

    • @mixhits9306

      While I agree, I also disagree. You absolutely do not need tracks to hear each other. That's wha in-ear monitors, and a monitor engineer is for. I promise you they hear each other perfectly. Staying in time is a whole other issue. Vince is so far off when they use vocal delay, they're completely off the grid. The Rolling Stones (not a fan)are like 250 years old, no tracks. There are countless rock acts touring that are not using tracks. Nobody can argue that rock acts playing to clicks COMPLETELY sucks the life and feel out of almost every song. Perfect example is the breakdown in Live Wire, and also Home Sweet Home. And I'm not convinced Tommy even plays the piano intro.All this aside, you do make some valid points, especially that it would be a disaster without them.

If you didn't have that - it would take an army of people to coordinate and ticket prices would be even higher. I actually think there's an art to a drummer being able to play to a click but make it seem like they are not.

    Their music isn't complicated enough to justify technology like this. Look at Rush, Dream Theater, Yes, Genesis, etc. That's music one would assume needs "assistance," but it's played live. Everything is done by the band, or with the help from crew triggering extra effects (only because the band members are at their live performing limits, playing 2, 3, maybe 4 different things at once). But they don't rely on things like this. To me, it's a sign that they just can't do it naturally anymore. Like KISS. Sad, but true. I like the Crüe, but not like this. It's unnatural.

      Rush, Dream Theatre, Yes, Genesis - every note played entirely live? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Rush in particular became very heavy users of keys, sampling, sequencers in the 80's to the point where Alex Lifeson felt the Guitar was getting pushed too far into the back of their musical landscape. Rush may have triggered most things live but there are huge sections of songs, for example on Power Windows that are created with & can only be played by a sequencer. Yes -- their biggest hit which I guess must be Owner Of A Lonely Heart? The most recognisable part of that song is a keyboard/sampler based fill that was created with & could only be played by a sequencer... Have respect for the creativity & hard work these artists have put into writing these amazing, timeless SONGS & stop talking ignorant rubbish about how they choose to reproduce their music live. The audio that goes into a band memeber's earpiece is either a monitor mix or a cue track. The monitor mix is the live audio that's processed through the monitor, allowing the band memebers to hear what the others are playing/singing easier and clearer in the extremely noisy environments of live shows. A cue track is a vocal rendition of an individual band memeber's internal thoughts they would use to stay on time, and almost always is nothing more than counting in time with the beat of a song. Both are completely different than a backing track, whch is prerecorded audio of instruments that are fed to the audience with the audio of the live performance, giving the appearance that there are instruments being played by people off stage along with the ones on stage, when in reality there are only the ones on stage.
