  • I Purchased this 20 gauge 500c from Cabela's on 4/18/16. Upon test firing i ran into this problem. So I returned it to Cabela's on 5/3/16. It was shipped back to Mossberg for repairs.. It was returned to us 6/14/16 with the problem NOT fixed and this is the results.. I have owned a 12 gauge Mossberg 500a for many years and I have never had a problem with any Mossberg prior to this. Stay tuned for an update...

@Geno B do not do that . Drop the trigger housing and reset the safety plate .

I just had the same problem. 2 things that I think fixed it. I bought a new safety, metal, and installed that. Stretched the ball bering spring to give it a little more life while I was at it. That didn't fix it completely. I had to strip apart the action and really clean the firing pin and group, that did fix it. Must have just enough gunk to not freely float in there. I cleaned it every time after shooting, but didn't break it down that far every time. Was kind of a pain as I didn't have all the right tools I felt like, but got it done and safety doesn't move now. Ive had that gun for 15+ years, Mossberg 500 20g.

Had the same issue but after years after I had bought the weapon. Bought a new metal switch and cleaned out the switch and that was it. Over the years with dirty thumbs a lot of gunk has bottom into the safety switch.

Mine will occasionally do the same thing - IF the slide is racked hard. If you rack it not-so-hard, then it doesn't engage the safety. What is happening is the back side of the bolt is traveling back just enough to bump the top of the safety block. Solution is to file a little bit off the top of that safety block.

I just bought a used 590 flex today. Same thing happened. When I stripped it down I noticed the exact thing you described. Every time you cycle the action, the bolt hits the safety block. Dremel that down a tad, easy fix.

@@jesusoftheapes bwahaha. For a pretty shotgun with more issues. Great idea. Unless you get lucky and stumble upon one pre 2000.

@@elche1976 Lucky ? The 870 is the most available shotgun on earth. Remington did make a Mossberg copy series 887 and they had all that thin stamped steel internal garbage inside them just like the mossbergs. The 870 had stock fitment issues with late Remington products in the slump years but I would still take a post 2000 870 over any mossberg. Now that Remington is under quality management the 870 looks like it is back to its old self. Take a Mossberg 500 apart and do the same with an 870. The 870 is a better design.

@@jesusoftheapes most available? Maybe because they're sitting in pawn shops or stores. I'm not saying that as a joke. Go look it up. 870 used to be the best selling. 500 overtook it. Likely because of the poor QC on 870s that you choose to ignore or accept. Again, do simple research if you don't want to believe me. That's the glory of truth... truth > your opinions.

11/8/2021 I just got a 590 shockwave that does this. Looks like Mossberg still has this issue.

Seriously? From what I hear.. it's a problem with the saftey.. maybe it isn't Machined correctly.. I sent mine back to mossberg twice with no correction.. I would reccomend a refund.. and request the same firearm.. but with a different Frame..

That's odd as heck. Never seen that happen before. Mossberg should've repaired or *replaced* your shotgun. This was published 06/14/16, so what was the final outcome? I'm a huge Mossberg fan, so I'd love to know.

Im very sorry about the delay on updating the final outcome.. I took it back to Cabelas for the second time, and they gave me a complete refund for the firearm. . In the long run. This rare malfunction was a blessing in disguise.. I took my cash and went to a local mom and pop gun shop where I purchased the EXACT Mossberg I desired in the first place directly out the catolog. Instead of what was "in-stock at the moment" at a big corporation like Cabela's.

It was just one bad egg.. I 100% stand behind Mossberg's products. . and will continue to support them. . they make some of the absolute best pump action shotguns on the market in my opinion.

I have a few 500's, a couple of 590's, a 590-A1 and a Shockwave. I absolutely love them all. I own a couple of 870's, but I'll grab a Mossy every time. There's just something about a Mossberg. I hope you enjoy the one you picked out (the 2nd time).

Never understood the huge mossberg fans . I hate tang safeties in the first place and I have yet to see an 870 express fail in anyway .

If you take the thumb safety off while it is locked to breach the inner paddle falls down and will do this or will fall far enough the safety just does not work .

  • @chriscole4266

What ended up being the issue?

    • @jesusoftheapes
      @jesusoftheapes 3 года назад +2

The thumb bar was either removed with the action closed or a stock bolt was to long and hit the safety pad and needs to be reset .
