Nice video. I wondered how to get that look, the "deckled" edge would be my preference. It's rustic and natural looking. I've been playing with watercolour paints this weekend. Man! I suck at it. I thought the tape would just come up and it ripped the paper. Your flower is gorgeous, with water droplets. Nicely done.
Thanks so much for this video. I always wondered what was the best way to do this and now I know. I will be interested to see how you float-mount your paintings for framing.
Thanks Kristine, Glad you like the video. Students will often ask me how to do things like this in class, and I'll definitely be posting a video on framing. Thanks for watching!
Hi Ross - Your hand-torn edge seems to work out very well, but just in case you weren't aware, you can get a deckle-edged ruler which would give you the same effect...here's a random link for one - but if you prefer to do it by hand, each to his own! store.traxartstudios.com/products/decorative-edge-ruler-12-inch
To achieve a white border around the painting it would be necessary to use an additional type of tape. To do that make an inner border with 1" drafting tape. The outer border is the 2" brown gummed tape that holds the paper to the board, and the inner border is the 1" drafting tape that creates the white border that frames the finished painting. The drafting tape is easy to pull off because it's just like masking tape and not glued down. Thanks for watching my video!
awesome video! i keep having an issue with my stretch paper where the gum tape is not sticking to my paper! it sticks to my board just find but where it lays on the paper, its completely lifted! ugh any idea what to do?
Hi Brooke, You should watch my video entitled “How to Stretch Watercolor Paper, the Classic Method by Ross Barbera.” In the video I give a detailed demonstration on how to avoid that problem. Thanks for watching my video!
To me, the edge looks like a torn edge and not a deckle edge. A deckle edge has a very specific FEEL to it because of the way it is created. Do as you wish of course.
Hi Lynn, I used traditional brown packaging tape / Kraft paper tape, 2" wide that requires moistening. I'm working on a new video that will describe the stretching process in detail. I also have an older video on stretching watercolor paper posted on RUclips entitled "How to Stretch Watercolor Paper by Ross Barbera." The new video simplifies the process slightly. Thanks for watching!
The painting that you see me talking about at the beginning of the video was intended to be exhibited without the need to be framed behind glass, so I varnished it with multiple coats of or Golden Gloss Medium and Varnish. I’m about to release a new video in which I demonstrate the mounting and varnishing process. The title of the new video is “How to Mount a Finished Watercolor Painting onto Canvas by Ross Barbera.”
Great video, I like this technique, thank you.
Thanks for doing this video. I really appreciate it.
You are an awesome teacher and artists. Thank you for your attention to detail.

Wonderfully helpful video. I too am looking forward to seeing a vid on mounting your work.
Thanks for watching! The mounting video is coming soon, and I'll also be demonstrating a few alternative way's to display watercolor paintings.

How would you remove the tape and leave a white masked border around your image?

What varnish do you use

realisticart okay! But what kind of varnish do you use on your boards that you stretch your paper on?
On my stretching boards I use Mixwax Polycrylic
U haven’t felt real pain until you’ve had to remove one of those mfs
