I love the movie, love the original DC characters, love Todd Phillips' original take on the prelude to them descending upon Gotham City, told from an underdog's perspective who doesn't even quite realize what he's starting. This film is like the opening of Pandora's Box (letting Gotham City's infectious mean spirit out) even before there are any superheroes/supervillains in that place. How we were taken even deeper into Arthur Fleck's troubled psyche than in the first movie, how Gotham's corruption became even more palpable, how fantasy crashed with reality in even starker contrast, how consistent with "Joker", how even more crazy and tragic than the first one this movie got to be - that was amazing to witness at the cinema. As a fan of DC's best Gotham City comics, I absolutely love this film.
That turn where he fires the lawyer and goes full joker and Gary comes in and the movie gets to that point of what was brought up about the questioning and the movie just really amped up we got that explosion then that song from hangover is playing and we get like another at least an hour and 10 minutes of movie at that point the entire time at that second half I said this is better then the first
consider the fact, that its not without precedent, that filmmakers, writers etc have spoken out against the interpretation of their respective movies, take fight club, for instance, from which many young men took a similar message and arguably missed the same point- or more recently, breaking bad- phillips just went one, or rather several steps, step further, because not only did he attach an original IP to it, but during folie a deux, theres several moments, that lead the audience on a bit.... i saw people walk out, during different points in the movie and though i think, it was mostly due to them, having had enough of the singing portions, it was clear to me, that many thought, until arthurs confession in court, even up to the prison rape, that this will bring out joker/they will get what they fucking deserve.... and as a fan myself, i can understand why some might feel righteously pissed, it didnt happen, but also, because they probably dont want to admit, they were invested, up to a point, in the now so popular narrative of critics, that it hates its fans....its made really clear, that this regards only a certain sub-set of the first jokers fan base and it mostly gets addressed directly, after the court explosion.... not a whole lot of time is devoted, to showing how unhinged some of his followers are, so i dont buy into the movie existing purely out of spite, i think phillips may have actually trusted his audience too much, because he gives several chances for an out, only to pull you back in- the unfortunate thing about that is, that it really only works once, thankfully it worked for me, that first time and that i rewatched the movie today- i think some fans are taking it so personal, that they take too much of the narrative, at face value, theres a lot more going on here, underneath what some assume is the reality, within the movie.... i can explain, for anyone who is interested, but for now, let me just say, that neither the argument that this movie exists only to spite people (it was joaquins first oscar win and his first sequel and he wouldnt have done it, if he hadnt known about the risk- also he seemingly opted out of another movie and is getting sued for it, he may spend a good chunk of his paycheck and the guy still has a growing family, too), as a cynical cash grab, its simply too big of an outlier and the claim, that the character of arthur ends, exactly where he started, really makes me question if we watched the same movie
If you watch both this and the first as a whole right after each other you get the movie Scarface it’s incredible to me I liked the second a billion times more there is something at the end that ads a supernatural element to this universe that takes it out of the reality direction

Gaga deserves an Oscar. Brilliant film and it stands on it's own away from the Scorsese fetishism of the first. Phoenix's utterly broken humanity when the mask slips and he starts crying in the courtroom for what he's done to Gary, his one and only real friend. This film is heartbreaking and also weirdly joyful at the same time. Harley Quinn is monstrously evil in this movie. She makes Margot's Harley look like a cartoon. The ending that elevated Arthur from gun toting psycho to 'the ORIGINAL Joker', a god among maniacs, a religious figure the Bat can never dislodge or capture and who was most likely his brother. I like it more than the first. This is actually scary, that a film so brilliant can be released to such bitter disappointment at not being spoon fed Batman/punch/Joker/punch drivel.
Folie a Deux is a fabulous movie and this was a fabulous interview! more content on this flick please, the narrative around it has snowballed into insanity and there need to be positive headlines that get seen
@@abdullahking7611 I wanna know in what sense that was good, not offending yall. But if the meaning isnt a silly pretentious joke about how we fake the glorification of some marginated people and then throw them away by expecting them to always be the icon we want them to be; then its just a piece of sh11t, pretentious and with no sense overall.
Because Arthur realizes that doing the Joker shtick did nothing positive for him, only garnered the wrong kind of attention, traumatized his friend, got him into Arkham, was based on a lie told by his mother in the first place, got him beaten up by guards, and another friend of his choked, and most likely cannot keep him from getting a death sentence. His life is miserable any which way, the Joker shtick only made it worse, still nobody cares for who Arthur is, so he might as well stick up for himself without Joker, at least own his life while it still lasts instead of keep playing a silly game of makebelieve.
They have destroyed huge potential. The film is a tragedy, and the bots in the comments saying that it is great and better than the one will not fix it. pity your money people:/
Its wild that people have passions and want to share it with others, especially people they really respect and may only get one chance to interact with...right? Yeah, having a personality is *definitely* cringe.
@@DrewtheJit If anything its devoid of a personality. When your personality is constantly externalised via media consumption, if anything your just a drone a consumer and no more. So embarrassing…. This is not a movie, this is a monumental failure…. The interviewer is putting all sort of underlaying msgs and explanations to make sense of the movie charade; “organic singing, 🎵? “. What the hell is this?
I'll leave you with my opinion. I think it's a great movie, it breaks the mold of superhero movies, it's a musical of a tragedy, it's based on a non-existent villain, it gives credibility to the idea that the Joker could be anyone, and I like that theory, as the birth point of a villain! Your last question hit the nail on the head. Todd Phillips made the movie the way it is. Because of the response he got from the first.
