A Nickelodeon star who participated in explosive documentary series Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV isn't impressed with former producer Dan Schneider's video addressing the doc's claims about his time at the network, including allegations of sexism and creating a toxic work environment.
Alexa Nikolas, who played Nicole Bristow on Zoey 101 and appeared in Quiet on Set, released a lengthy reaction video to Schneider’s RUclips response, in which the Zoey 101 co-creator admitted "there's definitely things that I would do differently" and said "I definitely owe some people a pretty strong apology." In her own video, Nikolas called out Schneider for releasing the public statement instead of making private apologies to the kids who worked on his sets.
“When someone doesn’t personally come to you and apologize, it’s not an apology,” she said. “If you hear about it through other people, it’s not really an apology right? An apology is to the person that you hurt. That’s what an apology is for.”

By the way I just want to recommend that if you’re going to comment with some not-safe-for-TOS terms, you might want to consider censoring with stars (s*x, p*do, etc) because your comments will get auto-moderated by RUclips, I have no control over it unfortunately. Cheers!
Edit: Since this video is leaving the regular audience I just wanted to clear up two things. One, more info has come out about the Drake Bell victim case than what I was initially aware of, I was going by what they said it about it in the documentary when I recorded this, and he is absolutely not absolved just because he told his own CSA story. Like he is still very clearly in the wrong. Additionally, just based on a misunderstanding in the comments, I'm not saying that any personal testimony in the documentary is a conspiracy, but the story around Dan Schneider has become so sensationalized that it often propels people down illogical conspiracy rabbit holes about everyone in Hollywood being p*dos, which, you know, does not help anybody. Hope this clears things up, appreciate the feedback!

What breaks my heart the most about what happened to Drake is that his dad actually tried to protect him, but was outmaneuvered by both Peck and Drake's mom. The fact that he thought he did save his son, only to discover what happened after the fact just makes it all the more devestating.

I agree with you about the Amanda Bynes thing. I understand that it's impossible to tell that story without bringing her up, but she obviously dosen't want to talk about it, and it seems like she's still struggling with her mental health, so it just felt kind of weird and exploitative that the doc was implying that Dan victimized her when Amanda wasn't there to give her perspective. I think that it's amazing that these child actors are at a point in their lives where they feel comfortable sharing their stories, but that dosen't make it ok for them to talk about what might have happened to Amanda. I feel like people have become obsessed with trying to figure out what specific thing "broke" Amanda Bynes, instead of just accepting the fact that she's dealing with some pretty significant, long term mental health issues and will talk about things if/when she feels ready and able to. I think people feel entitled to her story because they saw her grow up on tv, and that's just not fair to her. There's already more than enough evidence that Dan Schneider is a horrible person, we don't need to interpret Amanda's healing journey just to get one more sensationalized soundbite for people to spread around on tiktok.

The docuseries felt exploitative and it felt like everyone is piling on Dan as the person who "ruined people's lives" yet no one even came forward to allege Dan did anything s3xually abusive to them. The story really should have been on Nickelodeon and Brian Peck. I do believe Dan when he says he did not hire Brian Peck, but I also know Dan was an abusive and awful person in his own right. The thing I'm questioning right now is if he deliberately hurt or abused kids or if he was just a bad person who was mean to everyone equally. I'm starting to think he was just a bad person who was mean to everyone, kids, adults, etc. and he didn't do anything specifically targeting kids. People seem so eager to say Dan did it, but no one has come forward and told their story of what Dan did to them, and that to me, that idea, that they can speak for abused people and say "Yep, Dan did it" is exploitative to me.

I think looking back adults may be putting some of their thoughts into what was just stupid material that made kids laugh. One of the foot scenes is Tori using a bow and arrow with her feet... • @AppleStrawberryLove
      @AppleStrawberryLove 2 месяца назад +15

@@LordRayken I'm going to address the last part: YES. That scene is absolutely f*tish fuel. The very definition of the word "f*tish" includes the fact that it is a non-s*xual object that has no s*xual context around it that causes the person to be horny, and even be unable to get horny without the object. So, for someone into feet, no, it doesn't have suggestively framed. For someone with a f*tish, just the imagery is good enough. But to do that with a character that the show wants you to perceive as cute and sexy? Yeah, having her use her feet is a nod to the feet people going "I see you. Want some of this?"
Also, to debunk your other argument that you're slightly making. Ruining someone's life doesn't have to involve SA. You can just be emotionally ab*sive and ruin their life. Also, being mean to everyone is diminishing way to describe workplace s*xual harrassment which is one of the issues. To be very blunt, I think you need to watch the documentary again if this is what you got out of it because clearly, you need a few more go arounds for your media literacy to sink in.
Finally, I don't think the documentary was trying to say that Schnieder did do anything to Amanda Bynes. I think they were more of trying to show how toxic the environment was and just point out that this likely played a hand in her ongoing issues. Look, I don't like speculating, but I find it very difficult to believe she was in that type of environment and it had no effect. I think it's more that it very likely compounded some existing issues at best. Just like, I wouldn't say her role in She's the Man led to her mental health crisis, but seeing as she spoke about how dysphoric that role made her feel, I don't think it helped what she was already dealing with. I'll put it this way: mental breaks that require interventions do not just happen typically. They are usually a culmination of many smaller issues. Just like if you look at other people who "snapped" (both from mental health use of the word and true crime sense of the word), you rarely actually see one big cause. It is far more common to see issues brewing, stressors piling on, and similar things before the "snap" happened. So that it really wasn't one thing. It was all these other things and rather, this one thing was when the dam broke. It didn't cause it, but it was when everything that had been accumulating overflowed. Now, I do I know this is Amanda's issue? No. But again, I think it is fair for us to look at the environment she was in, the pressure she was under, the things she has spoken of, and other factors, and for us to draw a reasonable conclusion that "This didn't help. It likely was a contributing factor that exasperated things."
Also, to be clear: even as a teen, I was weirded out by the foot thing. I was aware even then that this was bordering on f*tish fuel because, yes, I knew that that was a thing. I didn't get all of them, but at the same time, even watching as a teen, it was often enough that I noticed and went "this feels like something else and not a gag..."

I think it's worth saying that we can hold space for the pain of Drake Bell and also acknowledge the harm he did. One does not cancel out the other. He was harmed because he was the accessible vulnerable party as a child, and he later found himself in a position to harm someone else who was vulnerable because he was not given adequate support to break that cycle. Our culture is not good at allowing nuance and it's extremely hard to address the cause of abusive patterns if we don't.

I'm not saying what happened to Drake Bell isn't absolutely horrific, but he chose to perpetuate the cycle of abuse. To me, at least, it felt like the documentary was attempting to almost absolve him of his own actions by framing it as "oh well, what can you expect, he was abused." As a CSA victim myself, I just found it to be insulting. I think there's also something to be said about the fact that he's trying to restart his career now, as if this is something he can use to regain the public's trust. Drake Bell is a predator with a pattern of abuse not only towards a minor, but several of his past partners. I don't know, I have kinda mixed feeling about it, I guess. What Drake did (and of course all the others that act the same way) IS HORRIBLE, and I'm not denouncing that in any way. But I like to maintain hope that even if you did something horrible that you can never atone for, you can still choose to get help and be better and stop hurting others. I'd like to live in a world where monsters could be redeemed, instead of never fully trusting anyone because they, too, could be a monster and have that be inherent to them instead of something that can be controlled and mitigated. I'll admit that his "I've done my time" stance isn't exactly comforting nor does it inspire confidence that he won't do it again. I just wished that having something horrible like this happen to someone wouldn't be the thing that seals their fate, you know. It's so bad to be defined by something that was done to you instead of something you actually did.

There is some research that should be put into it. I feel the show couldn’t talk about it because it would be too controversial but the court case through zoom is public and there are videos of individuals who got the transcripts from the trial. The girls friends testified that she was lying in her testimony and that she told her friends she was going to do this to him because she was obsessed with him. He did plead guilty to inappropriate messages but in the case they explain that the messages stopped as soon as he found out how old she actually was. You hit the nail on so many things I felt while watching this doc, particularly about all the speculation on Amanda without her presence. Thank you for also speaking to something I've been feeling lately, about Qanon's focus on equating people who work in the entertainment industry with CSA. It's easy to get the idea that Hollywood has an especially high rate of these crimes because news involving famous people gets disproportionately wide circulation and attention, meaning we are all more likely hear about, pay attention to, and remember news of CSA within Hollywood than the CSA that happens within schools, churches, teams, & families. There's absolutely a lack of oversight in the entertainment industry that (as we see in the doc) allows easier committing of these crimes, but I think many people fail to understand how widespread this type of crime is and tend to be more suspicious of it in groups they already don't like, while assuming it's less prevalent in groups they identify with.
It's an old and effective tactic to create a narrative saying a certain group commits SA (especially CSA) as a way of dehumanizing that group -- you can see it written about Jewish men in 1930s propaganda; about Black men for literal centuries, about Mexican men, about queer people, etc. Qanon is currently using the tactic for essentially the same reason -- it's not a coincidence they work so hard to stoke distrust and hatred of people in Hollywood, an industry / geographical location with particularly large populations of liberal, Jewish, queer and Latinx people.

@@makayla03333 I agree it's prevalent, but I question the assumption that it's MORE prevalent there than in other organizations. Many people seem to believe so, but I wonder what that belief is based on. I honestly don't know whether it's correct or not; I certainly wouldn't be shocked if legitimate research suggested higher rates of CSA in the industry than in other organizations. But I personally had trouble finding that specific info. (My search wasn't extensive though, so lmk if there's actually a bunch of studies by reputable sources that I missed.) Again, I don't know whether the rate is higher or not, but I doubt that current attitudes and perceptions about CSA in Hollywood are primarily based on evidence. They seem based more on hatred for certain groups associated with Hollywood. Why else have conservatives become extremely vocal about CSA in Hollywood specifically, an industry where liberals and minority groups make up a large portion, while not speaking up with the same frequency or vehemence when it comes to CSA in other communities like churches, schools, etc, where it is also rampant? There are ways we can work to stop these crimes in our communities, including the entertainment community -- but I don't see that work being done in earnest by most of the people who proclaim how depraved Hollywood is. Anyway, I'm serious about wanting to find research so if you know any studies specifically about rates of CSA in the industry vs outside of it, post 'em here!

You bring up a very solid point towards the beginning of the video about the dangers of generalization/pigeon holing based off one isolated occurrence. To me, it's the same kind of idea as people refusing to recognize that some social issues are grey areas and can't possibly be framed in solidly black or white without doing irreperable damage. I feel like a lot of people have either never learned or have forfeited their critical thinking/comprehension abilities for the sake of choosing the "Right" answer. We all need to understand that things cannot be tossed into general buckets of an idea (ideas like "All of Hollywood is like this" ) especially when innocent lives are involved.
Yes, there are multiple cases of dark things in Hollywood, but there cases of the opposite too. To insist that everyone in Hollywood is a dastardly pest with evil and exploitative intentions reduces the issue to a joke or conspiracy, making people tend to take these real isolated incidents far less seriously.

Okay, but to clear up some things about what Drake did. These are the facts. This part all has evidence to back it up, with the court records. :
    1. Drake was ONLY charged for communicating with a minor through text.
    2. NO EVIDENCE OF PHOTOS EXCHANGED WAS EVER FOUND.
(And texts that were deleted can very easily be pulled back up, so if photos were exchanged the FBI would have found it. But NO PHOTOS WERE FOUND. Meaning the minor absolutely. 100% lied on her end, because she says in her testimony that photos were exchanged. Doesn’t look good for her.)
    3. Drake says that the account he was talking to was fake and lied about their age, and he was unaware of the person’s REAL age, and once he found out that the person was a minor, all communication stopped on his end.
    4. The only reason Drake pleaded guilty, was because he was given a plea deal, where pleading guilty was what gave him just probation and some community service hours.
Now, here is some hearsay that I have heard. I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS PART IS FACTUAL OR NOT.
    1. Friends of the minor who pressed charges against Drake, have literally said she lied. They were with her at the concerts and have said she never spoke with him privately in person, and they were the whole time.
    2. The minors aunt has also came forward to say that it was lie.
Now with all that being said, I think that this case SHOULD NOT speak for all cases. I believe that with each allegation brought up, all evidence should be considered.
Unfortunately some people do lie in court for money and attention, BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN EVERYONE DOES.
Statistically speaking, most allegations of sexual abuse towards young children and women are 100% real, and victims of these crimes need a safe space to come forward and speak about it and get justice for those crimes.

Dan Schneider was on the 80s sitcom Head Of The Class from 1986 to 1991 as Dennis Blunden. Who knew that in real life Dan was his Head Of The Class character Dennis. 🏫🤔📺📚

Didn't Amanda Bynes old tweets from the early 2010's imply Schneider knocked her up? I do think it was a mistake not to bring her on to talk, but I'm sure she was invited, but rejected. I felt like 4 episodes was too short.

As someone who has been abused both as a minor and an adult, I found this documentary eye opening not exclusively because of the whole Drake Bell thing, but rather because I got to see how similarly abusers work. Abuse happens because the tactics behind a lot of it are wildly successful. It’s not your fault as a victim and you’re not alone.😊

I haven’t watched it yet (I have recorded it tho) but what I’ve found pretty interesting from a decent amount of people is that they’re surprised the documentary is done decently well. Like I guess if you mainly watch documentaries on streaming platforms they are generally hit or miss because there are different crews for each one. And while it was immediately streamed on max this is an ID channel documentary and that is their bread and butter. They only do true crime docs. So I’m not surprised it was a generally decent documentary but I am surprised so many people are surprised by that fact lol.

For other notes, Brian Peck was in the first X-Men movie in a cameo with Stan Lee on the beach. The scene with Robert Kelly
And he did commentary eith the director Bryan Singer. And producer Tom DeSanto defended Peck.
The people behind that film definitely have some skeletons.

Touching on the Amanda Bynes situation: I’d say I’ve seen majority 2 kinda of commenters, though I will say different platforms have different engagement sometimes and I’m comparing my experience on IG to Tiktok. But on IG there’ll be commenters who are totally in support of Amanda with “you look so good” or overall super encouraging with what she’s doing. Then you’ll have the whole “poor thing, look how soulless she looks” types of comments but I’ll shut down that kind of negative focus here and there when I have the time.

So I have watched all four episodes twice now. Because with documentaries like this I always try to watch twice. Once to just listen to the story the documentary is trying to tell, and the second time to be more objective.
I did not feel like you did about how they handled the Amanda situation. To me, I never felt like there was going to be a bombshell dropped. Both times I watched I felt like it was just more set up for “this was the culture of Nick, this is how Brian Peck and Jason what’s his name we’re allowed to happen.”
I understand your concern about people fully sliding into Q-anon stuff with this kind of story too, but I think at this point it can be acknowledged that CSA is wildly prevalent in Hollywood and other elite circles.

Here’s something that people need to know about Hollywood. You create a character for yourself and you convince 30 people that you are this person all the damn time. And the other side of Hollywood of people who know that you are a worthless piece of garbage. The moment you go to court you have the people that you lied to, by creating a persona character for yourself knowing if something ever did go wrong, you have those 30 people that can back you up because they were under your illusion the entire time..
It’s called playing the game right and how to have the power for survival. Even Family members can have a second half of themselves of when they show their face to their family, or to their coworkers or other friends. Everyone in this world can sometimes have completely different personalities, depending what group they’re hanging around with..
Remember, it’s part of care and love that you want to stand up for your best friend because you have memories with this person and you grew up with them. But you have to consider the fact that what goes on between your relationship with your best friend has nothing to do with how they treat other people around the world when you are not around them..
there’s a huge chance. Your best friend can be the biggest piece of garbage out there in the world, and you would have never known because they don’t allow themselves to show their true selves to you. Always be on guard with every human being that lives and walks on this earth, titles are just titles.

I want to add that Rider Strong & Will Friedle (who the doc mentions being on Peck’s side during the trial) came out before the doc and said they had no idea the extent of Peck’s crimes until they were already in the courtroom sitting on his side. Both Will and Rider seem tortured by what they did; Will describes sitting there and “wanting to d*e.” Peck manipulated everyone in his life into protecting him, knowingly or unknowingly.

I'm glad you made this video, because I've had a hard time articulating how I feel about this whole thing. I feel like making a bunch of assumptions about the people who were potentially exploited, especially Amanda Bynes, who didn't participate, is deeply weird. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those assumptions are true, but that is her story to tell if and when she wants to. Nobody should have their tiktok comments flooded with invasive questions about their assumed abuser.
I also feel like posting pictures of Amanda Bynes 20 years ago and now and being like 'wow look what they did to her' is, uh, rude as hell? Why are you taking jabs at her appearance? Do you look the same as you did when you were a teenager? Nobody asked for your opinion on her hair or tattoos.
Based on the stories we've heard, I think /surviving/ is an accomplishment for former child stars. Leave them alone if they don't ask for the attention.

I’m on episode 2 of the documentary and when I tell you that I’m fuming, I am angry. I also want to say that the Ned’s declassified cast has such a nerve to go on Tik tok live to joke about the documentary because it is disrespectful in many ways and they should be ashamed of themselves. I was also shocked to see that Will Freidle sign the letter because Batman beyond is one of my favorite shows and I need a moment or two to process everything that I heard.

I think i’m in the same boat. I met Will at a convention a few weeks prior to the documentary dropping, and it hurts because not only is Thundercats 2011 one of my special interests, but I paid 100 dollars for him to sign an OOAK Lion-O doll and the complete series Blu-Ray. What I’m trying to say is that I’m trying to come to terms with it all, at the moment all I can feel is horror mixed with shock and disbelief
