      Actually, doesn't work like that. You would have to learn it as a spell from a list. You only get the spells as is without "as a [class] spell" This does work with magic initiate so you can chose a first level spell from your class list so you learn it, no money down, and get a free cast of it. If, however, you got the spell from a different list from your class, you only get it for once a day. This is because Spell casting features say "you can cast spells from the [class] spell list" but if you were a wizard and got magic initiate for warlock, the 1st level spell you get, if it isn't on your list of spells you got with a wizard ability, only gets the once a day casting. This is how all racial spells work, too.

    I remember taking Keen Mind on my wizard so I'd always have a backup spellbook. Just read over it every so often and it's all committed to memory.

    • @Vol7ar
      @Vol7ar 5 лет назад +41

      I also played a Keen Mind wizard and my DM also let me commit my spellbook to memory for the purposes of copying it 'just in case'. We plan on playing that campaign again soon and the DM gave our characters some weeks of downtime to figure out with him that takes place before we start again. I wanted to start studying a new language and is letting me learn it twice as fast because of the feat. Keen Mind is such a subjective feat because it's 90% up to DM interpretation. And from what I've seen more often than not DMs barely even let it do what is written, the amount of people claiming "accurately recall doesn't mean perfect recall" is astounding. Definition of accurate "in a way that is correct in all details; exactly."

    2:24 I disagree with the rating of Diplomat. Friends has the terrible downside of them turning hostile towards you after just one minute. One minute is barely any time at all (unless in combat, but why are you spending an action to talk better in combat?). This feat is just you being better at talking - nothing magical about that, and vitally no reason for any downsides associated with it. And by my same logic 1 minute is barely any time at all -- most characters introduce themselves in longer than a minute. Additionally, they get the other effect of being charmed -- not willing to attack you nor your allies. You can just see the bandit leader, stall for a minute, and then BAM: Combat avoided.

Our games tend to have a lot of RP so it works really well for my character. Keen Mind and Observant would have more fans if their mechanics did more to support the idea that taking either of those feats makes your character into your favorite tv detective with photographic memory.
    If your character has keen mind and silent image they should be able to perfectly recreate a past scene and re roll a bunch of investigation and perception checks to get more info on the case, main bad guy, or whatever else they're trying to figure out.

    • @fftere
      @fftere 5 лет назад +1

      Everything that is DM dependant is bad. If you have to have a good DM or players for it to be good, than it's not good. Simple as that

    • @fftere
      @fftere 5 лет назад

      Hm, no
      Almost all of the spells, abilities and feats have a clear statement of what it can or can't do. If the effect relies on the DM's discretion and narrative viewpoint for it to work properly, as Divination and some Illusion spells, than it's unreliable in some tables, therefore ineffective to use in most situations. A Fireball, for example, is reliable because you know what it does every single time and has a single purpose, no DM can argue with it. Major Image, otherwise, it's relative to how the DM aproach the rules and metagame shenanigans.
      "If your character has keen mind and silent image they should be able to perfectly recreate a past scene and re roll a bunch of investigation and perception checks to get more info on the case, main bad guy, or whatever else they're trying to figure out."
      ^^ This here is a subjective application of the rules, nowhere the PHB apprach this subject clearly, which means you would rely on the DM to use your character effectively every single time. It's a risky move and not worth it in most situations. Everything that's not mapped out in the rules is unreliable, although pretty fun. Imagine all your trouble to come up with those ideas just for your DM say, "No, you can't do that, sorry". And you wouldn't have anything to back it up.
      Another example: Observant feat relies on the DM's capabilities of planning ahead and actually having clues and informations prepared. Some clueless DM's won't have anything worthy for you to observe in the first place.

    • @Adam-cq2yo
      @Adam-cq2yo 5 лет назад +29

      I had this neat idea for a class that can turn enemies into cards to later use like spells.
      I had a similar idea where the class would collect custom cards based on experiences. For instance, you save a town called Townytown from burning. You get a card called Townytown, or The Thanks of Townytown, or The Burning of Townytown. You can use it later to do a thing. You come across the organization that was burning the town. You beat up some henchmen and get Organization Henchman, the card. One of the important, named baddies of the Organization - Bigbaddy Thefirst - and you beat him up too. Now you get the card Bigbaddy Thefirst, which does something very thematic to Bigbaddy. Bigbaddy shot cool dark energy orbs, so so does the card. You reuinite with your long-lost mother who was taken prisoner, and you get a healing-type spell called Motherly Reunion or something. All these cards could have art as well, possibly by the DM for that extra touch.

  • @comma1737

    The armor feats usefulness are class dependent. The main draw though is the ability to add a shield in medium armor feat or wear heavy armor for poor dex builds.
    Learning to wield a shield is only available through medium armor feat. A shield can range from 2 to 5 bonus ac which is huge for any shieldless class. Coupled with Shield mastery it can grant evasion to non rogues.
    I think the resilience feat is under rated. It grants proficiency to saving throws on a stat other than your class. For spellcasters that can be huge if you take resilience in constitution. First theres an increase in constitution. Second theres a bonus to the constitution saving throw so concentration checks are easier. At high levels thats an extra 3 to 6 to your saving throws and assuming a decent constitution of 14 or more minor hits (DC 10) won't break concentration.
    Charisma is another place where resilient shines. The attacks that target charisma saving throws tend to be overwhelming when they occur.
    Prodigy is often overlooked. A prodigy in perception with basic Wisdom (10) can have anywhere from +4 to +12 to passive perception (14 to 22). Similarly it can be used in performance, persuasion, intimidation, stealth for massive gains regardless of which one you pick.

    Skulker is a feat I've found to be very useful for a particular rogue build: the constantly hiding archer. It makes it so you can keep using your bonus action to hide in combat to gain advantage even when you're only partially obscured (some GMs are particular about that) as well as making it so those arrow shots don't matter if you miss. The final bonus is that if you're a level 11 Rogue with darkvision from some source, you will never be at disadvantage on a perception check, a skill I almost always have my Rogue's expertise into.
    Fun thing to do is also throw on elven accuracy since bows ARE DEX weapons :P

      It's listed as a one handed weapon, so you only need one had to work it.

      -Repeater hand crossbow.
      -If the character can make more that one attack as an action, use the bonus action to fire the second hand crossbow , drop it and use that now free hand to quick reload the main hand one.
      -The rule of cool. Because if it isn't braking the game, the DM hasn't outlawed it and is just making things more fun what's the problem?

    Xbow expert also works on cantrips. Now it's possible to use Eldritch Blast up close at no Disadvantage. Keep in mind that if you still feel like you're better off with other feats or stat bumps, you only have Disadvantage on ranged cantrips up close (5ft) against targets who "can see you and aren't incapacitated". So Hold Person on a target or an ally grappling the target inside Darkness waves the Disadvantage away. I would argue, however, that the incapacitated part should be enough. It's not unreasonable to think that a it's harder to hit a moving target even when it's blinded, but imho if it's paralyzed the close quarters Disadvantage should be waived.

    Crossbow Expert essentially doubles your damage per round at low levels. Should be above 6/10 imo.

      ALSO elven accuracy and polearm master are definitely higher than 8/10. I'm disappointed.

    i know this is like a year and a half late but i dont think you realize how strong diplomat can be. it isnt like friends where it only lasts for a minute then they know they were charmed, it lasts for as long as you are within 60 feet of them, then when you leave its for another minute and they dont even know they were charmed. plus you gain expertise in persuasion. this essentially means you can talk your way through any situation and get out of a lotta sticky situations easily. Not to mention it doesnt have a limit on how many people can be charmed, you could literally walk into a war council room and convince every single person in there to go to war for you if you played your cards right. Idk thats just how i see the feat.

    Three months late, but
    Drow High Magic is legit af. I'm running a Drow with it and Elven Accuracy and honestly, access to both feats just makes me fall in love with the playable race.
    You get a free Warlock invocation (and one of the better ones imo), 1/day Magic-B-Gon, and 1/day "look ma I'm flying"

    Why are Unearthed Arcana Feats in a 2019 Video?

      @@diegovargas8375 and why wouldn't you? they are great and frankly 5e needs as much variety as it can get. I mean "playtest" material still needs to be played with in order to be tested properly. Only reason not to allow it is if you are a new DM and don't want to have to deal with the potential unbalanced nature of UA material.
