Awesome. Just built a 1020 flat top stage 2.. 202 head flowed and ported and 1.5 forged rockers...Its going to be very interesting.. A great comparison film.
Robin the 998 has the MiniSport stage2 kit on it... Last time we checked we are getting around 52 bhp at the wheel, the 1275 around 62 bhp......not alot of differance if you can take some weight out of the 998. Mini Sport modified cylinder head
Nu 998 with maniflow stage one and 12g295 cooper s head was exactly as our 1275. But shorter gearing and 10inch wheels probably helped with acceleration. In general a 1275 will be faster, but there's just something about the 998 and how it wants to rev that makes it so much fun. Speed is overrated anyway in my opinion.
I have a 998 engine ,which was definitely faster than two of my friends 1275s. As far as I know it was a completely unworked engine, it was very fast and I have no idea why. Until I destroyed the gearbox however.
Neat! I’m in Canada 🇨🇦 and have a 1968 998 automatic. It’s a pain to find transmission parts! How far can you go up the power curve before you damage the transmission clutches?
Tom, you can safely double the horse power of a automatic, on the later mini's you can go a little further than that because the AP2 gear box had larger bearings.
@@classicminiculture9800 Can you put a later box on an early engine? I saw an Austin America that was an automatic and 1275, that’d probably be an easy swap to double horse power eh?
Hi bro great videos. I was wondering if you take the distributor out to clean it and you've moved the car but want to put the distributor back in how to set it up that the timing a correct.
Get cyl 1 on its firing stroke, you can see this with the crank pully timing mark, or the flywheel timing mark. Then put your distributor in and time it with a timing light.
Fully Automatic is only when you engage D (drive), shifting 1, 2 , 3 still works to maximum revs without automatically shifting (unlike modern cars), so you can shift the first few gears before you go into D.......these early mini gearboxes were a real engineering feat!
They tend to last longer than a manual, you can safely double the horse power as well without significant wear, particularly the later AP2 gear box, challenge is when they do fail not many people know how to work on them and finding parts is a challenge.
the outcome was not a surprise really, purely based on gearing, but it was interesting to see that there is a point that 1275 stops pulling away.......still like how smooth the automatics are......amazing for the time period..........great to see you working on the automatics as well👍
Teenager with a traditional gearshift! Respect! Bravo! 👏
Haha the rapid gearchanging! Baulk rings in post lol. Got to do mine yet i'm fed up with the crunching lol.

Two cracking minis there has been lots of TLC put in to them for sure. Your son did jump the start so i would call about even lol. Cheers Dave

Nice one, getting the car’s out and about this time of year is a bonus👍
Very interesting comparison! What cylinder head or valve size has the 998? HP?

Good comparison
A good bit of fun....
What am I missing? The 998 is an auto, but you are still shifting? Is it clutchless but still manual shifting?

He jumped you at the start?
Yep......but I believe he would have still won by a nose.......its close between both cars though..
👊✌
How durable are the automatic transmission would you say?
