Today NATO is the world's largest and most powerful military alliance- which Russia would invade? It's precisely because Ukraine is not yet in NATO that Russia is acting now rather than when Ukraine is in NATO, which would make it impossible. NATO would certainly fight back if attacked. But not before.

In the case of those that lived in the Western Ukraine (Galicia and Volhnia).Many fought in the 14th Waffen SS division under Nazi German leadership,or worked as guards in the EXTERMINATION camps of Poland.Not forgetting the massacre of 80,000 plus Polish civilians.
Ukrainians had the second largest casualties in the red army. Beaten only by Belarus. Of course WW2 ended an extremely long time ago so we'd be better off talking about the other times we were allied with them.

Of course everyone wants peace, but there's a difference between peace whilst sticking to principle and having peace at any cost (which is effectively surrender). If peace was to be demanded today it would mean Ukraine ceding about 20% of its territory to Russia, rewarding Russia for it's invasion with additional land. As if that wasn't enough, what else might be demanded of Ukraine in exchange for "peace"? Ultimately it's the same principle as a school bully. You don't want the bully to hit you, but you've got to be prepared to stand up for yourself to prevent that happening.

Russia has struggled to defeat Ukraine, though it seems to be in the ascendancy now. A larger army and the massively increased production of arms has gradually worn Ukraine's resistance down. But the idea that Russia is capable of sweeping across Europe in the face of direct NATO opposition, with its superior air power and more sophisticated weapons is a very different matter. Should NATO now put forces on the ground to defend Ukraine? No chance. We are too afraid of Russia's nukes and there is no appetite for a full mobilization/ conscription to go out there and start WW3, (short of a Russian invasion of Europe).
The tide hasn’t suddenly shifted. Anyone who has been listening to Colonel Douglas Macgregor or Scott Ritter will be aware that Russia has been in the ascendency from the very start opting to use the least amount of hardware go get the job done in the Donbas region. A peace deal was very much in place in 2022 yet Washington sent Boris Johnson to quash the deal. The west thought they could weaken Russia with sanctions but it backfired. It has strengthened them in every aspect. They increased their sales of oil to China and India and it strengthened the BRICS alliance. WRONG...Putin did not start the conflict in 2014, the reason why a small number of Russian forces went into the east of Ukraine was to support the local Russian speaking militia from daily attacks by Ukrainian forces . But prior to that a democratically elected Ukraine government were removed in a USA inspired coup. The west had since the break up of the old soviet union been determined to degrade Russia with the intention of making them impotent, because the west wanted to weaken Russia and to take over their vast resources.
The fact is since the soviet union broke up there was no need for NATO, and promises were made in the early 1990's that NATO wouldn't expand eastwards, but they did, encouraging ex soviets states to join up to NATO.
Russia warned continuously there were red lines, and the west went over those lines resulting in the conflict, unfortunately it's the Ukrainians who are now paying the price for the west intransigence and imperialism, and paying with the lives of Ukrainian young, for what is a USA proxy war!!!!
