Cool video, so tell me about these jet motor, the motor still needs petrol or gas as you yanks call it to run right? I've been checking out the best electric motor but maybe I should be investing in a jet motor if there clean running?? Any feedback w about them and where to buy would be awesome cheers guys?
Well we call it gas down here in Texas, and we also call anyone north of the Texas border a Yankee. Haha. These are 4 stroke and are as clean as they sell in a combustible engine. Any mercury dealer should be able to get them, but most still go thru Missouri to purchase. Best prices.
Do you take that first measurement you showed with the motor all the way trimmed down? If yes, you’re basically not trimming it up much once you accelerate because it’s at the perfect angle?
Dennis I'm thinking of putting a 60/40on my 1967 Boston whaler and I measured my transom and it is 19 in from top to keel would that be a short transom on long ,,,thanks in advance
Did blazer build it with the center rib deleted in the back? I have a 1856 blazer and mine runs all the way back. Was curious on if it was worth removing and if you think I’d see any performance improvements by doing so.
Hi Dennis, your channel has been awesome resource, much appreciated. I am looking to setup a drift/jet boat for fly fishing and I managed to stumble upon a used deal for 1854 SeaArk. Just wanted your thoughts on motor hp size and wether you think this would be a nice platform? Was looking for a 1660 with pods, but this seems like it would plane with less HP and still draft shallow with the extra 2ft displacement in a 18ft hull.
Man I wish I had a definite answer for you. You couldn't go wrong with the 80 mercury jet. A 40 jet would push it if the boat was bare minimum. I really don't have lot of experience with a lot of set ups. I love my set up and it works well for my needs.
Great info, do you what kind of locking nuts that fit on the reverse gate and the name of the plastic sleeve that goes into pin that holds the reverse gate in place, I hit something, and where maybe I could buy them on line, thanks.
I have to install a jack plate. That's going to take me 4"off the transom plus the estimated 2"already off the transom. So 1 1/2" above the bottom of the boat? My boat is a War Eagle 1652 if that makes a difference and my motor is a 20hp mercury. I'd prefer bigger, but I work with what I have.I'm also installing a jet doctor whale tail
I have a 40 original bass tracker boat with a 2 stroke mercury outboard. Question, I want to find a lower unit jet drive, is that a doable situation or do I need more engine ? I can send pics if need be
Does this same set up apply to a tunnel hull? I have a 20 foot Double XX and it came set up with a splash guard and my motor is mounted below the tunnel to where if I take a straight edge it hits the top of the foot in the same spot yours hits below.
Dennis, did Black River Boats set that height up for you correctly or did you have to adjust it once you got it? I ordered a 1652 from them, picking up this spring
I had them wait until i got there to mount it, but we all agreed on the mounting height. So I believe they are capable of getting it right or atleast really close. Hard to get them perfect right off the bat
@@DennisBohannan thanks for the reply. Im in wisconsin so probably wont be able to be there when they mount it. Once it’s mounted is it stuck for good bolted exactly where its at or can you still adjust oi slightly up or down slightly once its mounted? Sorry for the questions, will be my first OBJ
I’m leaning towards a 1656 Havoc DB. Is deleting the center rib at the back absolutely necessary? The river rat is a completely flat bottom and read that you don’t want that. What’s your thoughts ?
I'd get the river rat over the DB. I have been in many of them. Not my first choice but really good boats and jets do good on them. Also the center rib is not a must unless it is a really big rib like I have seen on sea arks
What if you have a semi mod v? Do you think that would negatively effect jet performance? I have a tracker grizzly 1448 and a 25hp Mercury jet and I think the dealer installed the jet too low. I cant get the motor to plane unless I jack the motor up but then I just shoot 50 percent of the jet stream straight into the air.
I had to set the top of my shoe 1/8” under the boat to eliminate cavitation and slipping on take off. It sprays a bit but doesn’t seem to limit my top speed. 25 merc 4 stroke 1448 lowe and it runs 25mph wide open 22mph 3/4 throttle with a load. I tried it level with the bottom and still sucked air. Can’t figure out why
awesome video man. Do you think you lose performance when you have a hydraulic jack plate on? In other words do you lose power when the foot is further away from the hull? i use mine to fine tune the hight and raise when i don't want it in the water at all..
I'm really just not sure. Never have ran one. I know some guys that do and they don't complain. I think in a straight line there is probably very little ill effect. When it come to ripping left and right having the intake further back would have an impact.
@@DennisBohannan makes sense. It’s nice being able to fine tune mine to the sweet spot where I’m getting the top speed out of it. I have just always wondered if I was losing power because of it though.
I'm reading in different places that a mercury 40 jet is not 40 hp. But then I read in another place that it's a 60hp powerhead and it is actually 40hp out the jet. Can you clarify this?
I really miss the stick. The reason for the change are. 1 the stick was awesome once you new it had time on it, but otherwise not anyone could just hop in a drive. 2 on the new boat I didn't want to do any fab work getting stick and hot foot mounted. 3 just more floor space with tiller.
The stick and hot foot was a great combo and I could really maneuver that boat almost anywhere. The weigh distribution was great also. Sit forward a little more and close to the middle. I'd do a stick again for sure.
I'm not sure if all pumps have this, but there is a bolt right above where you grease it. Remove that and there is an adapter that threads into place that a water hose fits.
Yes on these mercurys right above the grease zert there is a bolt that you can remove and add an adapter for a hose. Also on the back of the motor there is a back flush, that is not technically designed for running the engine, but I have done it.
@@DennisBohannan thanks a lot! I appreciate it. I'm picking up a boat tomorrow so you saved my ass with the quick reply because there's no info online about doing that.
Depends on where you’re boating. I know where these boats are built, most people take them on Current River and Black River. You have to have a jet outboard because of all of the shoals. Those rivers will eat up a prop. If you’re in deep rivers or a lake, prop motors are the way to go.
Is the jet outboard noisy or quiet? I'm not fussed if it's noisy or quiet I wanted a 200hp jet drive mercury on my boat but the boat builder said it's noisy?
@@DennisBohannan I ran for the first time this week end. I had cavitation when trying to get on plane. knocked down a small dimple dent and it almost fix it. Well I painted my boat with raptor bed liner... debating on a jet outboard or mud motor on a 14' jon.

What does your transom measure from the bottom of the boat to the top of your transom?
