- The Congress started the cavalcade and convoy culture, but the BJP did nothing to reduce it either!
Basically, it appears that politicians like strength in numbers... How many cars does one require to transport one person?
Service chiefs welcome the Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he arrives in massive car cavalcade with Z plus security at Vijay Chowk, Delhi. Although the PM spear-heads the Make in India campaign, he trusts his security while on the move to a German made BMW 760Li High-Security Edition.
Viewer Jingle John helpfully informs us: "The PM in fact wanted to use Scorpios which he was using as Gujarat CM, and Mahindras were enthusiastic to modify it for better security, but the SPG turned it down. For the swearing in ceremony as PM, he came in a Made in India Scorpio."
The BMW 7 Series that our Prime Minister drives around is a highly secured armour clad luxury mobile, which sports a V12 engine churning out 546 PS of peek power and can do a 0 - 100 kmph sprint is 6.2 sec and has a top speed of 210 kmph. This car is compliant with a VR7 grade of ballistic protection and parts of it comply with a higher VR9 grade of protection as well. Its cabin can turn into a gas-safe chamber in case of a gas attack and is also equipped with a back-up oxygen tank.

Prime Minister of India, Chiefs of Indian Armed Forces and other dignitaries who are at the helm of country's leadership responsible for managing geopolitics, standing up to human rights, responsible for looking after nuclear stations etc. A very potent targets for adversaries to subvert the state's and global order should not travel in a convoy rather should use on a 2 wheeler, without security, with helmet on will be enough for their security.

I don't mean to be hostile but you realise that the convoy make-up and size is decided by SPG, right?
Someone (very)close to me worked there and was actually in charge of the MT(motor transport) department.
Every vehicle there has a purpose from the electronic warfare vehicle(safari with antennas), command and control vehicles to ambulance, flanking bmws(carry security personnel and separate the PM's vehicle from foreign vehicles in case of a vehicle attack) and 2 identical protectee vehicles( 2 maybach s650s to confuse any attacker from knowing which exact car the pm is in).

There is a difference in the word meaning of 'protocol' and 'culture'

There's nothing wrong with this. Security measures change time to time based on the threat assessment by the security experts. Given, India's posture in global affairs and the nature of its adversaries I can't blame this security. If this is wrong, then what about Air Force One and Marine One aircraft allocated to the US president and the multiple rings of secret service agents?

The problem is not security convoy for Prime Minister rather over use of this precedent for Chief Ministers and other dignitaries. Security Convoy must be reserved for Prime Minister, President, Chief Justice of India and Chief Of Defence Services (CDS).
PM needed security, he leads the country. This security is for the position holder. This position Person is very much needed for the country. That's why country gives such security.👍

The issue according to me is, the VIP convoy slows normal flow of traffic when they go from point A to B. Other than that I believe VIPs such as the General or HM, NSA or PM should have large security convoys. They deserve it, look at what happened to Rajiv Gandhi. Although, I don't like the Gandhis but that should never had happened.
Preventive measures of any sort are expensive and you wish they were there once something bad happens like in the case of Shinzo Abe

Major leaders of a country need security. Multiple incidents in the past have shown this. If you want to see true waste of money, go see the small district 'hopeful' leaders travelling in a 3 or 5 car convoy with each vehicle costing upwards of 70 lakh.

I’m from England , our PM travels in 3 car convoys. That’s enough here.
In Britain parliament is supreme in every matters. In England pm don't excercise too much power. Also security is based on risk assessment. Initially pm of india security was given to police but after 2 assassination. India felt the need of raising special protection group.
