Eh, $40K on a minivan is a middle rate. Buying it new, he should be able to keep it for 15 - 20 years (assuming he isn't driving cross-country all the time.) It's not a bad purchase with his salary (under than going the leasing route.)
It's not that the price of the car is too out of their budget, it's the fleece that made it a bad deal. Getting an older reliable van for a few years while they pay down the rest of their debt will hopefully pay off in the long run once they get on a budget!
I agree with you. Couple things, and depends on the lease. You pay the monthly lease payment and gas and nothing else(except the tags, which is weird because you don't own the vehicle). Oil changes and any repairs are done by the dealer with zero out of pocket on your part. And you get to drive a new car every 2-3 years. But I'm still with you, why not just own the vehicle, get to the point where you can pay cash for a newer car...

I will never ever lease another vehicle again as long as I have breath in my body. My parents taught me how to lease when my first vehicle was financed at 17 years old. I had about $1500 saved up (while making minimum wage in 2005) and looking back on it I should’ve convinced my parents to match my savings and pay for a decent car with cash.
If he had read his lease documents and done his due diligence beforehand he would already know the options. The instant gratification,FOMO,YOLO,etc. was strong with this one.

I definitely pushed boundaries by telling her that was a VERY stupid purchase, which she didn't appreciate. Now that it's hitting on three years soon I hope she just buys a used car!
Feels great driving two cars that are newish 2013 and 2014 bought used with cash. Most on my street are in $30k+ cars with longterm payments being slaves to the banks.

Replace the van with something reliable look at you're sales contract cancel all add on warranties then take it to the selling dealer hand them the keys and walk away. Then they will auction it and add the balance into your snowball
I love most of Dave's opinions ,but he really needs to learn more about leases.Not saying they are the greatest for most car buyers ,but they don't have 14% interest rates as he says. If you can negotiate the capitalized cost , leases can be a great option for a lot of people
nothing wrong with a lease in and of itself one has to run numbers to determine what is a good deal. minivans hemorrhage money in depreciation so its an expensive vehicle to lease. try to sell it if you can but if not pay the "stupid tax"

To be honest, he should just pay the remainder of the lease and learn his lesson. He’s paying $500 a month and he’s out $10k to get rid of it plus the cost of replacing the van. It’s cheaper than $10k to just pay it for a year and then buy the van out in cash after saving up hard with his large income

Dave is a multi millionaire and thinks the average person makes the same money as him. My assumption is he’s thinking about wealthy people with kids will have the cash on hand and will need a minivan. But the problem is just because a wealthy person has 38k for a car, doesn’t mean they will spend it.

Update: we got out of our lease. Got a used 2011 Honda Pilot with 88k miles. Will have it paid off in a few months. Relieved and Ready 💪🏾.
