I have a very shiny Lamy 2000. The finish has worn off, and it is shiny and polished. It also writes very well. It's vintage. It says W. Germany on it.

I'm a Singaporean too and while I really prefer supporting local, I purchase my Lamy 2000s from overseas as Lamy prices are insane in Singapore. Partly also due to the fact that many premium pen shops in Singapore are located in the city centre. Prices in Singapore range from $300-350, but by buying them overseas I only spend about $220-240 depending on the exchange rate, and that's including shipping. For $240 I think it's quite a fair price to pay for this pen, considering it's a piston filler and it's not your regular resin plastic. Just for comparison, the Pilot Custom 92 (piston filler), costs around $200 as well in Singapore. So I think it's just a matter of where you find it! If you like it go for it! It's not a bad pen by any means, I've had an extra fine and now I'm running a medium, both are extremely good.

@@WrexelsWorld That's great! I think pens are often taken too lightly and I think many people who aren't into pens don't take good care of their fountain pens that well either. Prices in Singapore are too crazy 🤡

I find there are quite a few 14k, piston filling (incl vac-piston fillers) fountain pens out there. Perhaps not at the price range of the Lamy 2000. You have mentioned those 3, but also the MB 146, Leonardo, Maiora, Stipula, Visconti, Pineider all have 14k gold nibs with a piston filler. Granted they are more expensive though.
I have the Steel version with an OB. It is a very pleasant writer. I do think, that the 2000 is one of the best values you get for a pen. That does of course depend on where you get it and how much you pay for it. I was surprized to know that it was expensive in Singapore. I figured the taxes are low, but perhaps the exchange rate is not favorable at the moment.

I do appreciate the engineering of this enduring design, and also how you addressed my dislikes straight away. The fiberglass is too slippery in my hand, which might be mitigated if there was a grande OS version. It is also too lite, and I prefer my pens circumcised rather than hooded. The Lamy nibs are indeed smooth - I have an EF on an Accent, and stub on my Safari.
Now, it was 15 years ish ago, but I had a pen pal in Singapore and prices were significantly lower then than they appear to be now. I got my Pelikan M-1000, a Visconti Van Gogh, and an Aurora Talentum all for really reasonable prices through him. And coincidentally those 3 pens in particular might explain why that Lamy is not for me! 😉

This is one of the best pens I know. Other Lamy's models can be as good as this is with the 14k gold nib.

I will say that this is a "workhorse" type pen. I don't love it as I prefer finer nibs (the EF is like a Japanese F or FM) but it is in rotation for me as it is fairly nondescript i.e. non-flashy in an office environment.

Another thoughtful and well informed vlog.
Fountain reviewers are so often held captive by their sponsorship links. There are some notable exceptions.
This isn't a pen for me. Though the design is well conceived, it's not to my taste compared to the Lamy Al-Star and the Lamy Studio shapes. Though they are not in the same class. However they too can have much the same nib.
Lamy nibs do vary a lot. I think that comes down to their batch testing which is unable to fit each given nib into a range which would constitute either a Fine, Medium or Broad for example. Most nib manufacturers seem to have a sorting stage. My favourite pen maker actually publishes the range for each size and lets the customer choose withing the range, to a degree as well.
I polish all of my Lamy nibs, just a couple of minutes and they then write so much better. I have steel Lamy nibs with the smoothness of a Pilot 14K nib. And, all of that angle of writing goes completely. My guess is that the Lamy 'robot' made nibs just don't get the attention they deserve.
BTW. Bock nibs and possibly Yowo too, come in many different grinds, it might be that the buyer just needs to request a stub, or whatever and be prepared to wait. Here in the U.K. and the Nederland's, I have learned to ask and then to be patient.
    Thanks for another superb review.

Appreciate your comments Kevin. Although I do my own basic tuning as well, I try to keep each nib's DNA as much as possible e.g. the signature pencily feel of a Sailor, and the much sharper pointier feel of a Pilot...

@@WrexelsWorld Yes, preserving some of the character is important. Having said that I have had two Sailor Pro Gears pens with nibs so rough they scratched up fluff from the paper and Lamy nibs that were simply horrid.
At the end of it all I want something pleasurable to write with. Hopefully without making every pen nib the same.

The disparity in pen prices is rather alarming. I purchased mine (new) at a bargain basement price in August of last year; it's an EF. Amazon had a significant discount, so I paid £127.00 Sterling; for me, the full range of nibs in the UK were available - I'm fortunate to (also) have large hands, & thus, can write with any nib width I so choose. Even against today's global exchange rates, there is no way I'd purchase a mainstream brand from Singapore at the moment. I would concur that if you do wish to buy this scribe, get it from Europe - not only to avail yourself of a better fiscal pricetag, but also for the aforementioned range of nibs. Excellent, candid overview !!

Aloha! First off, let me apologize that this comment may not necessarily refer to this particular video. In one of your Pilot pens with a fine nib, you had mentioned that on the up-strokes, it's much drier, thinner and in my case, not the most smooth feeling. I appreciate you mentioning this as I think only one other RUclipsr has mentioned this. Unfortunately, I found out about this AFTER I already bought a Pilot Custom 74 with of course a fine nib! My Pilot Capless/VP fine is much better in that respect. Have you seen this same "issue" with other Pilot nib sizes? Is it worst with a EF? Any thoughts would be much appreciated. BTW, I am catching up on your past content - enjoying all of what I have seen thus far - currently watching your Platinum President review. Mahalo from Kauai, Hawaii. Thomas

    • @WrexelsWorld
      @WrexelsWorld  Год назад +1

Other permutations that will affect the feeling of strokes are - the ink you use, your writing pressure, the paper, and ink flow i.e. a wetter pen feels smoother. Lastly, pens get "run in". Don't give up on your 74 Fine. Keep using it and the smoothness will come. The Pilot EF will have a lot more feedback than the F, try the 02 Platinum Preppy if you want a smooth EF.

@@WrexelsWorld Thanks for the reply. Yes, I understand the factoring of ink and paper and my comments were based on using Sailor Kiwa-guro, which I think is not a dry ink? I actually bought the Pilot Custom 74 (F) used, so I am guessing that it has been used before me, but the tines look okay. It's finer than the Pilot VP (F) so that I like as I have a specific purpose for that pen. I mostly write in print, not cursive, so the thin/weak/dry up-strokes are more evident as I write. Little frustrating when you have cheap steel nibs perform better in that respect! May end up getting a EF VP nib unit instead of another Pilot model? I do own a Platinum Preppy EF and thought it wrote better than my Pilot Kakuno with a EF. Thanks again for the reply and for producing content.

@@kauaiphotography thanks for letting me know the details. Thicker, smoother nibs are better for print. Pens like the EF 742 and the EF Capless/Vanishing point are in my mind best for cursive, that little bit of feedback guides my strokes better than a super smooth nib. Hope that helps.

I want to love this pen. Classic pen and and looks great. I've bought it twice and sold it twice. I bought ef and f. The ef was wider than than the f. Very annoying. I also find having no defined grip section makes my hand tired.
The official Singapore price is much to expensive. The UK price with some occasional discount from cult pens makes it worth a punt though.
