Proeneeke did a superb job of scene selection and editing of his story in film. I do not grow tired of watching his life story.

A remarkable man. Living in peace and harmony with all of God's creatures. I am happy that his ashes are on the mountain behind his cabin. His spirit is still there among the wildlife.

My brother stumbled on the story of Richard's cabin story while planning a vacation. Richard was one of my father's buddies. They left Iowa together heading west and ended up in Oregon. My father stayed in Oregon until around 1963. Richard would come by to visit us when he was heading back to Iowa to see his family. My family moved from Oregon to Iowa in 1963 where Richard would stop and visit. He would always come to the school and show us slides and movies of his adventures in Alaska. One last thing my middle name is Richard guess who I was named after.

A beautiful tribute long overdue. Rest in peace and thank you Richard Proenneke for all you have done and also John Branson for editing his journals just like Dick would have wanted it.

He's always inspired me with his attitude, skillset, and connection with nature. A simply amazing man. Thanks very much for posting this, and reminding me of the need for me to re-visit the wilderness again. :D

He did not spend all year every year living in his cabin. in the first ten years there, he spent several winters away. He would have been interesting where ever he was. But while at the cabin, he depended on resupply by air from Lake Clark. He never pretended to be either a "survivalist" or a hermit. In fact, he had a constant stream of visitors, including the governor of Alaska. It wasn't that he didn't want to be somewhere else, which he often was, it was that he wanted to be there, at Twin Lakes. And in spite of his comment that something was "good enough for rural work," he was something of a perfectionist. I'm from West Virginia and have known people with a wide variety of skills who lived back in the hills, I've never known anyone quite like him. For one thing, everyone I've known was (or had been) married. Proenneke was single and usually alone but he wasn't a loner.

I like the part in the original when he uses an old fuel can to make a fridge and a few other things like a spoon and stuff i seen it when I was a kid supposed to be asleep but i was sneaking having the tv on at like 3 am lol and i have had that in my head ever since then it has helped remind me to look for uses for items that others might not before throwing things out as used or usless

It hasn't been that long since everyone was "off-grid." I know people who grew up in a house with no electricity, no inside toilet and no telephone (the last modern convenience received) but were thankful when they got city water.

His life choices are commendable. However, if we all made the same choices our country would not be the great nation it is. In fact, it would not exist. The fact is, there are thousands of hermits. The only difference is this guy documented his experience on film. We must not forget, the film, camera, canoe, clothing, would not exist if we all emulated this man.
