Ah the Orion or AKA "The Poor Man's Atlas" is still quite the menace on the battlefield even almost six centuries since it's debut. Always a reliable mech and always an unwelcoming sight for me when I'm trying to clean house on any mission.
When I get a Orion for myself, I usually refit it as a short range Brawler. So I replace the LRM-Launcher (can't remember if it's 10 or 15) with a SRM6. Than every remaining Ton get invested in Armor, Ammo and Heatsinks. Well, I like my mechs close up and personal!😅😉😃🤘
I typically would just choose a totally different Mech rather than refit the Orion into close combat, and that's because it isn't very impressive: SRM10, an AC, 2 medium lasers and weaker lower arm melee? Compare that to say a Crusader with SRM24. That's why I don't like to convert Orions into close combat focused Mechs.
Another great guide, testament to the orion as a heavy mech being able to withstand 281 damage and lose 0 components. An out and out all purpose brawler mech.
Yeah, the Orion can withstand a lot of damage and still remain a threat. It's why I don't really care for making it a full close range Mech as it doesn't do a whole lot more damage, and then it loses its ability to provide fire support when its armor wears down.
I was expecting it to take excessive CT damage because of how thick its body is, but I guess the AI doesn't wind up affected by that from the receiving end.
another great video just got an orion1k last night gonna make this build when i get home. Tho im giving it to the AI so im wondering if i should give it two lrms or two srms since the AI kinda sucks when you give them multiple ranges of weapons.
Both are fine. They just require different setups. Even in those setups there's room for different strategies. For an all-in close combat setup? 1) You could be a close combat Mech yourself and lead your close combat lance into battle. The disadvantage is if you wear down and get dangerously low on armor, then you have no option for fighting except in dangerous close combat. In addition to this, most enemy Mechs are equipped with medium lasers and SRMs meaning most enemy Mechs are at least decent in close combat themselves. 2) You could use a mid range Mech like a Rifleman with twin AC5s and 4 medium lasers. The enemy will prefer to target you because they'll register you as a higher priority threat meaning your close combat lance can go in and mostly be ignored letting them get into close combat while you engage at a distance. Those are 2 ways you could make the same close combat setup work.
@@GitGudFox I like to use a commander for my personal mech so I think that works good. Lord knows i get enemy mechs attention when im at med range. And i can do some serious dmg up close too so going in with an orion by my side would be nice.
UAC does a lot more damage, but it's on a gattling system that spreads the shots out more, so your realistic range is shorter because you need to get closer to ensure every shell hits.
The AI has a tendency to not hit the legs as much as other parts of the body. It's also why you'll notice I take a little armor off the head and legs typically. If I need a lose 1 ton of armor, you'll see me frequently take it off the legs because the AI doesn't prioritize the legs. That doesn't mean that you can't lose your legs, but it tends to be coincidental.
@@lpdr0k Want to get all of the classic models done first and foremost. I could do variants, but I also may move onto like large concepts like how to make money etc.
I usually give it to AI pilots, switch out the LRM for an SRM6, or switch out the AC10 for a medium rifle, and up-armor it with additional heat sinks. Since it is AI piloted I usually rebalance the armor to 13-15 in the rear.
You probably will get better performance out of an AC5 because rifles don't do a lot of damage, and you need very consistent accuracy to make the most of our rifles where as you can miss a lot with AC5 and still do well due to its high rate of fire and low heat.
The arms are covered in reinforced jackets. They are designed to function as bludgeons which is probably an oversight by PGI to not give them more melee damage.
How to improve the Orion ON1-K: You don't. Wait until you have double heat sinks and CASE. If it was good enough for Aleksandr Kerensky, it's good enough for you.
@@GitGudFox I never liked that they made Kerensky's personal Orion into a custom variant. The man drove a -1K and he drove it well. He didn't need a Snub-Nose PPC and Gauss Rifle to kick serious ass. It's honestly an insult to his legacy to suggest he had anything more than the barest of necessary upgrades. DHS, CASE, and an LB 10-X in the side torso. That's my head canon for Kerensky's Orion. That's not even getting into all the god-awful lostech filled "Legend-Killer" variants.
@@WolfHreda Yeah most of the hero models are fake news. I'm not sure which I prefer. If they were canon, they'd just be Mechs with collector's value. The non-canon enhancements give the game more replayability though. I'm not sure which is more important.
@@GitGudFox for the purpose of the game itself, it's fine (except Legend-Killer. LK is _just_ a Rifleman. Gray Noton was just really good with it). It just annoys me personally. Kerensky was a pragmatist, there's no way he would've replaced his tried and true LRM 15 for an experimental Snub-Nose PPC in the middle of an all-out war against Amaris and his goons.

Yeah it was a lot of fun reading the lore of this Mech.
The m1911 of mechs
Loving your videos
Thank you very much!
Your videos are helpful even to veteran pilots. I like seeing how you set armor values and the tactics you use. Great videos as usual! 👍
Thank you! I'll be tackling the Longbow next.
@@GitGudFox all are appreciated and watched. Keep up the hard work
I don't use this mech, but I keep them in my stable for the AI Lancemates. It holds up well to their.... unique tactics.
I typically only keep 1 or 2 Orions. I do prefer them more than a lot of the early assault Mechs though like Victors and Cyclops etc.
Love your video formats and rp aspects you do along with references to BT history. Keep them coming ❤
Thank you! I'll be doing the Longbow next.
I like this style of video. Informative and digestible. Keep it up man!

@GitGudFox agreed, their are other large mechs that do a better job of short range battle
Glad i found this channel. All of the tips here I really found helpful. Hope you do a video about the Warhammer next.
In time, I go through a cycle of Light-Medium-Heavy-Assault.
My go to heavy mech, if it aint broke dont fix it

@@GitGudFox I thought that to, but it just kept going
Awesome mech vid and a very flexible mech indeed. Hard to go wrong in a Orion.
Yeah it's like having a miniature Atlas.
I love the Orion. Not saying its the absolute best mech but it's pretty tough, available and well rounded. Plus its fun to customize!
You know it gets the job done. It's not fancy, Atlas-style loadout, but it gets the job done.
