- I don't regret watching The New Gate...but this was a bad adaptation and there's no sugarcoating it. Clearly the novels are great as otherwise no one would have stuck by this visual mess.

Yeah its unfortunate as a source reader. Its a fun story but sadly ended up in the hands of a bad studio. Defiently would recommend the manga or light novel. Manga has great art.

is the manga translated into english, and does it show way more than the anime, and i mean, more after the anime stopped?
i liked the anime, and i would like to read the manga, i don't read LN, but i am interested in the manga of new gate.
p.s. i always read beginning to end, even if i watched the anime, cause their is always stuff they don't show in the anime.

As a source material reader , i am so disappointed they didn't even explain how Shin is no longer level limited like he was in the game , where there was a level cap. And even now his NPCs are still at the level cap.
There was no explanation due to the fact that he was isekaied. And it's widely known that when humans from our version of earth end up in another world, in one way or another, we're broken and op as hell. Hence why there was not much explanation given. But if you remember what shin said in ep 1, when he was monologuing, he noticed that his powers and abilities were working differently than when was a game character. Basically, he glitched out, and became his character. And due to said glitch, he ended up being op. The fact that he got isekaied was the trigger to him becoming op.
This ending was a complete mess, story-wise, and it looked even worse. They were rushed or ran out of money or something.

I agree with that. Having read the manga version, based on the previous episode, I had assumed that this was going to be a 13 episode season since there was quite a bit of important things that happened.

The animation in the last episode was bad but the adaptation that frustrated me the most this season was Unnamed Memory. They butchered that series so badly.

Manga reader here. I agree with you. I watched the first half and was fine with it. Then the most recent episodes were hard to watch.
How hard
When I saw the PV I instantly decided that I'll never gonna watch this show.
Don't get me wrong I like the manga and I love the artstyle, it is just this Anime is just Megamind 2 level of disrespect to the source material.
How disappointed am I? EXTREMELY. As you say, this story deserved so much better. =\
The story, the characters and the world its fun, enoayble and engaging. The light novels are great from what I heard my self but after this adaption animation wise its bad. I don't if they outsourced or worked on last minute or they wasted the budged somehwere but I feel bad for the author. He put his hard word into the series and bet he was happy that this was getting an adaption but after seeing it himself he felt a shamed to what they did to his work I fell. Now I really want to go read the light novel and support the author after what the studio did here.
I felt like i was losing it watching this shows animation get worse each week.
About the visuals being horrible... I absolutely agree with you on this 😬

hio the end was REALLLY rushed they cut out 3 chars just to bring up 2 we already know (safe budget most likely) sad it had to go on like this.

You're right to point out the ugly drawings in that one. Honestly, I've never been really pushed away by how an anime looks but this last episode, my gosh it was awful. It's like they were so rushed by time that they used their storyboards. I've seen my share of badly animated animes, but it's a first that I see an okish animation and ugly art. And they also cut looooots of things in this one, trying to cram things in it... *facepalm*
Off the top of my head, this season had THREE bad adaptations.
New Gate, Whisper Me a Love Song, and Unnamed Memory
ESPECIALLY Unnamed Memory.

Unnamed memory was something i stopped watching. And this one was my lazy watch but did not care

Unnamed Memory is good. One of the rare endings for a romance anime. What ruined it are source reader who keep whining about skipped or rushed content. I don't care what goes on in the source material as long as it still good as anime only.

Even Re:Monster has better animation than The New Gate... I who both read a bit of the LN/WN and Manga felt the pain after the 5th episode but decide to finish it so i can't forget this ever exist.
But hey! at least it probably better than the "She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man" right?
Damm, this is sad. I missed a few episodes because I can't schedule for shit but I'll finish it nonetheless. Hoping for more despite the current mess.

To me this is soa if SAO never had to have the abridged version. Yeah the production is butt ugly but the story line, the characters, and the gimmick of sentient npc characters made me absolutely love this show. It even made me want to buy the manga which I never do. If there is a season 2 I’ll still watch it. I’m gonna stick with it. I think it has potential and it’s gonna be one of the few that I’ll ride or die for. I still like shield hero and tsukumichi despite the lackluster second seasons, but I have enjoyed them all. I will keep watching and I hope it improves.
Watch In the land of leadale. This series is more like that one than SAO
Ok if Sonic 06 can be brush up/fix annoyed aspects and issues that made the original just sucking so bad into something great by fans working on it years later on, then this show can be better with more time and polish in animation areas for a season 2, which i wouldn't mind if we see improvements are made for the show before release 🤨
😂😂 different situations for this show and 06, but overall yeah, both content shouldn't be released/at least until able to be brush upon when seeing obvious issues that needed to be changed to leave a satisfying product

I liked it, in general, there was clearly a lot of background not mentioned during the anime (a little too unmentioned). But man oh man they messed up the last few episodes and seriously messed up the final episode. Clearly there was a studio meltdown of some sort.
The direction was terrible. And in the last episode they used long-shots to try to make up for the lack of staff but messed up even the long shots.
This is one I might pick-up the LN on. Or at least give it a shot. Kinda like "So I'm a spider"... the LN translations (both the unofficial one and the official one that was freshly done and included illustrations) were incredible and one of the few I put myself on the wait list for as they were coming out.

Like a supervisor telling the workers to go faster with the drawing and animation and ended up with a bin trash anime that didn't deserve the treatment that it occurred. Kindly like Nier the anime and many others that fall under the same category for multiple reasons why
This and unnamed memory legit wouldn't have made sense in so many situations if i didnt know the source material.
I get wanting to get somewhere with the story if you only have a limited number of episodes, but this is just crazy.
This is why I dropped this show on episode 3. This was all over the place and the characters were so 2D literally and figuratively they could slice vegetables and fruits.
Not only how it looked, there were so much problems with narratives.
It looked like they ran out time and just released what they had. They put time into the balcony scene, obviously. If the rest of the show had that much detail, I don't think anyone would be complaining. The author should ask for recompense.
For Content, read the Light Novel.
For Art, read the Manga.
To torture your eyes, watch the Anime.
I didnt even read the LN and manga and still I find this anime so bad to watch..
Its painful. I dont want to tolerate the amount of inconsistency I saw with this anime. :(
I am genuinely sad and am left with sheer disappointment.
PS. You are not harsh in judging this anime.. this anime actually hurts its LN in a way and the anime industry in general because they allow this to be passed and aired in this state.
Some of the shoots looked like they just coloured the storyboard sketches that the "real" artists base their work on. Some shoots looked like they whent for a One Punch man simplicety style. Eyes crooked like there is no tomorrow. It looked like to me as if they have enlisted the Pizza delivery guy to draw a few frames.....
It's really sad, the story itself is good. Some ideas are amazing, but the inconsistency is insane.
You get a decent anime but then... bullshit, bullshit everywhere, the story starts dipping in and out of the orrible isekai tropes, the animations sucks, the ost is boring, there really isn't anything good. But then... boom emotional moment and profound character interactions. But then... other random isekai tropes. But then... really interesting ex-game dynamics. But then... screenshots of characters that a 3 year old would have drawn better.
It's like this nonstop, it's so infuriating, it really makes you feel the missed opportunity. I'm sad for the author who had to see his story in such a state.
Agree with most of the comments. I watched episode 1 and then read the manga. Really enjoyed it and got very far… then as the anime continued I was … disheartened. The source material had a lot going on and the adaptation could have been great.
This really pains me man. I started reading the manga in the first place because when i heard about it coming out i was interested in the story. I was surprised at how much of a great time it was but man this was done dirty with the anime.
I really hope this gets to be one of those special series that gets another studio to hop in and redo it. this series deserves a second chance.
You wanna talk about a run that we didn't deserve, Rose+Vam. Bam! This was likewise ok if you look at it from. "This is a completely different work of art/fiction." Does it deserve better? Yes. Does it disqualify me from enjoying it? Not really. This is a prime example of "put crap in, get crap out." The studio didn't put in enough effort to bring it fully to life. It's the anime equivalent of UPN.
Arguably, I would say that if it wasn't for the animation, it would have been an easy sleeper.
However, if the studio was going to have problems from the start, then why do it in the first place??
Makes no sense what-so-ever.
The story itself was rather getting interesting, considering that it was going to open up to a series of events that
was introducing the PKers, and stragglers of the net that for some reasons, wasn't able to leave, or even decided
to stay, rather than leaving.
I feel really bad for the author that penned the series, and was given nothing in return.
In fact, was most likely screwed from the start.
If they do decide to air a season 2, then the author better makes sure that they do work with a very dedicated
studio, that is going to offer the best possible quality that they are capable of providing.
Disappointed in the studio that screwed the pooch, and should close down for a pathetic effort to place ink
onto an anime series, in which the story and the characters are good.

as both a manga and ln reader, this is one of the most pissed and saddest ive felt. i discovered the new gate a long time ago and really enjoyed the story so much that i went on and read the light novel. after i heard that an anime adaptation of it was going to happen, it made me very very very excited. then i watched episode, and saw just how butchered, rushed, rough around the edges, and crap the show was. so many details were missing, so many scenes were massively changed (shin checking his skills, stats, items, titles and testing them out, first encounter with tiera, moon shrine being changed to moon sanctum and having an uglier look in the anime, and many more). its ashame, tho if theres one good thing that came out of the anime, is that it was so bad i reflexively reread the manga again and im having a blast again bc of how just good the story is.
I hate when the anime company messes up the story and people lose interest in the story. Shinka no Mi (Fruit of Evolution) had that problem, but it was done dirty. New Gate has poor art quality, with Fruit of Evolution, they changed the entire story for the 2nd season, left out characters who were necessary for the longer story, and introduced new characters on the villain side. They turned the comedy into over the top slapstick comedy instead of the situational comedy that the story had. Then accelerated the story to end it with the 2nd season when the original story had enough material to probably run to 4 or 5 seasons.
Before this episode I didn’t think the animation was unforgivable but this last episode is the worst animation I’ve ever seen on anything
The animation is usually the last item on my list when deciding to watch a show. Not the art style but the general animation. This was definitely hot garbage. One scene I actually had to double take to realize it was our MCs in the shot. The girls looked like someone else drew the wrong character at one point. The story unfolded like someone gave a writer 10 bullet points and said, put these in there without giving him anything else. No story, no dialogue, just here make sure you click all these boxes.
The idea of other players and stuff is cool but this anime could not put its footing together with the plot and man....prolly the worst animation I've seen in recent years. Best example I usually give for poor producing and writing is that it seemed like someone told me about the summary they looked at of a book someone else skimmed. :)

As a source reader it got worse and worse as the season went on, not only visually but in cut content as well. One major plot point lot of the game rules were ignored at the start and i thought okay they will explain them when relevant, then they didnt and im thinking they have to explain it by the Girard fight or they will just do him dirty, and they didnt include the info so Girard was done dirty relevant to the source material. The pacing was good at the start, the art was acceptable and the story was the same good story so the beginning was worth the watch but this last episode covered an entire volume, had terrible art, moved like a powerpoint and skipped major plot points and character introductions. As a source reader i am happy to see this go by now and unless it is a new studio or has so many changes it may as well be i would not watch a season 2 i would just reread the novel.
Don't worry you weren't the only one that sat thought this show, the story and characters were intriguing enough to keep me watching, i did role my eyes when the bird eye view of the harbour city scene come up :D. but the shots of the faces.. hmm at least i love when human hand did it i would be less happy with bad 3d cgi >
The New Gate manga are pretty good and actually during the event of the last episode, he actually got to meet up with his old friends, the players. They actually died during the Death Game arc of the pre-series game, but were resurrected into the world after the other players logged out. I can only imagine that they pushed off that meeting during the last episode because it would have lead into a bunch of socialization story instead of jumping into the fight they probably wanted to cover in the episode. I haven't read the Light Novels, but I know there's not enough material in the manga for a second season yet, but the anime for Tsukimichi and Mushoku Tensei have both passed what has been covered in the manga so far, so that's not a problem. Hopefully they can find a better studio to pick it up next season.

Sorry for those that aren't enjoying it. I love this anime especially since I love sao. I can't wait for season 2. All of that stuff you are talking about they can come back to it later in season 2 as flash back or in full detail of him talking about it and telling the story to someone. So many people are so picky and complain. Just enjoy it for what it is and at least we are alive to see an anime of a Manga that we love.
Edit/add. Plus we all know and hate how many animes we love never even get to see a season 2 because funding always stops of the company drops it or files for bankruptcy. So many times many amazing animes get cut sort and forgotten. So that could also be why they are rushing through it to tell the story for people that don't read the Mangas and if it get a lot of attention and they get to finish the anime they can always do a reboot or do a prequel or even movie adaptations.
This show definitely deserved a better adaptation at least visually. It's unfortunate that a lot more interesting ideas came out at the last episode. I think I might try the source because like you said it was enjoyable. Ironically, I think that harems are actually one of the most legit versions of relationships these days, if you take into account the various women that live and die by the 6/6/6 rule.
If you dont bring Nekomata@rising, Holy and Shadow in the anime, dont tease them T_T
Being familiar with the manga version, from where the previous episode left off, I had assumed there was going to 13 episodes for the season. There was some very important story info they just glossed over.
as a source reader, i didn't hate it. the pacing and whatnot felt fine to me. if anything was garbage, it was definitely the animation. it wasn't anything like ex-arm or berserk 2016 so i'm not really complaining about that either. it was a good 6/10. low standards, ik but i don't expect every adaptation to have perfect animation. i'd rather have good pacing instead of a hot mess like unnamed memory which had decent animation but horrible pacing issues.
Considering the problem the studio had in keeping staff members, my guess is that they outsourced most of the second half of the season to multiple sub-contractors. It's difficult enough to keep consistencies within one staff group. It would be impossible to get multiple studios to meet that high of a standard. Someone at Yokohama Animation Laboratory (or more likely) Cloud Hearts really messed up.
I believe that source material being adapted into an anime should 100% stick to it's source. Making changes defeats the purpose of an adaptation. Other studios do it all the time, and it works. The studio that got ahold of this, needs to be shutdown asap. I'm still convinced that society is trying to destroy the anime industry from the inside out. Y'all see what sweet baby inc. is doing to gaming....
The studio adapting The New Gate and Whisper me a Love Song suffered a catastrophic team meltdown. According to posts surrounding Whisper me a Love Song, work conditions got so bad that the teams working on those shows collectively walked out on the studio's president and they were forced to outsource everything after like episode 5 or 6. I'm not surprised that The New Gate's production soured as well.
What can I say, the quality of the anime mid season was reminiscent of the quality of anime in the 70's or 80's (before evangelion age) so somehow it actually gave me a pang of nostalgy, but the last episode is real garbage, totally unacceptable, and the light novel is not published in english, only the manga. I feel like crying ;_;
I hate reading so will never know the difference thankfully. I really enjoyed the show an dont get too upset over the animation
It did get pretty bad, which sucks because the story was actually really good. Hopefully another studio picks it up for a second season and does it justice with the animation
It's almost like the director and/or staff of the studio has personal grudge against the author 😂. It's so bad it feels intentional at this point 😂😂

Yeah this was a pretty “eh” show for the most part but it definitely had its moments that stood out in a good way. Basically New Gate is a 5/10 anime with 6.5/10 moments and elements. I could tell what it’s trying to do and how it’s trying to be different but imo that summoner show from a couple years back did it better. Hopefully if it does get a season two the production team does a better job because it seems the story is beginning to cook and I kinda want to see what it’ll serve.
Ngl the new gate manga wasn't really hooking me, I'm not sad that it got bad anime adaptation. However it is unfortunate, I can imagine myself really disappointed if a manga I like got bad anime adaptation.

this had promise. the plot was good, the animation, not so much. so much promise. needed more wilhelm tbh. at least we got one good fight scene from this series.

The unpaid intern just wanted it to be done. The voice acting was good and great in some episodes, Music and sound effects were par or better, the script and story was outstanding. I feel sorry for the intern who drew this you can not put this on your resume. If you are art director of this who is going to hire you? This is the land of broken dreams
It wasn't until that last episode when I realized something was off with the animation. I didn't mind the show altogether, but I also haven't read the source material. The animation downgrade reminded me of JJK S2.

I enjoyed the anime and concept but uh that ending was rough. I'm also not a fan of the girlfriend plot(especially after looking up her fate...) but it's honestly completely understandable that he had a real person in the game he cared about. Just wish this was focused on schnee and didnt look like crap.
This anime was so ugly looking that I had to see other people's perspective on it. I almost felt like I was bearing witness to a sin far greater than the human eye can handle. I've seen gas station bathrooms look more appealing than this atrocity.
The New Gate Manga has an english translation but not the light novel.
I prefer to purchase light novels for my library... I did buy the Manga for Chained Soldier "Mato Seihei No Slave", which is very ecchi...

The manga had great artstyle so I am so mad when I saw the anime PV. I never bothered to watch this since then. Look, the 7th Prince (princess) got a good adaptation, it even adapted the lewdness of the manga. 💀

I was still ok with it till the last episode but they butcher the last episode so bad that I completely lost it. Not just animation but story also since it does not follow not original source material. As a light novel reader I am just watching the show so that I can see the source material getting properly adopted but they butchered it in last episode.
God the show was fucking awful. I have read the manga, and dear god it feels like the people where drawing this after watching a puppy getting stoned to death. It has got to be the most painful adaptation I’ve ever seen.

I had a feeling this must've been a better story but the studio was just quickly fumbling it episode after episode until we reached the end. I'll consider checking out the manga for this one
The production was going down in real time
I've been reading the light novels, and the world building, story & characters are fantastic. I love it. But the English version is fan-translated, and it is... pretty hard work. I'm not sure if it gets better, or if after 16 volumes I've just gotten used to the awkward sentence construction :/ Still a great effort from those fans, and I'm grateful they put in such an enormous amount of work over years.
I liked the story enough that I ignored the visuals. At least the VA was decent.
And good for you for dropping Re:Roofie AKA Re:Monster. Dudes a serial rapist and the girls all have a bad case of Stockholm Syndrome or cultist groupie itis.
Hey B, if I may inquire, what didn’t you like about Re:Monster? I’ll admit, I read the source material long before the anime and the anime definitely leaves A LOT to be desired.
Just a point. My friend pretty much described Schnee as "Elf Violet Evergarden" when he saw her LN/Manga art and I kinda agree with him.
(Adding this part. The anime studio did The New Gate dirty. I rarely say this about anime adaptations but I honestly believe so in regards to this series. Better off reading the novel or the manga)
I did enjoy the story but yeah, the anime felt off definitely got a "something is missing and this should be a lot better" sort vibe and I'm an anime only casual.

it had so much potential. but it became so hard to watch in the late episodes. i would not watch more but am i would read the light novel at this point.
