Thanks! Great question. They are called shoulders. They have no purpose other than to show off your finesse as a blacksmith. It is more of a farrier thing than a blacksmith thing. Not necessary but fun to do 🙂
Keep up this work. Don't get discouraged when the forged in fire fanboys tell you your anvil is too low and you'll catch gout, or your thumb on top of the handle will cause hip dysplasia or something.... Can't wait for the next video. When you gonna show how to make a shoe?
Thanks for the encouragement, I'm a professional farrier so we like our anvils low so we don't blow out our shoulders. My video coming out next week actually has a short clip of me shaping and burning on a shoe, maybe eventually I'll do a whole video on building shoes.

Bored of tongs? Check out this fun video where I make a twine hatchet that we use on our farmstead: ruclips.net/video/5tFT6-dAR1w/видео.html
This gets my vote for best tong video ever
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice set of tongs. Nice making them from Sucker Rod, they will last a lifetime.
Thanks! They also work great if you are building chain links.
That was some very nice work!!😇😁😇
Thanks, I like doing offset reins and shoulders on most of my tongs. Although old school reins have their place because they are so versatile!
Your work shows meticulous mastery! Thanks.
Thank you, I appreciate the compliment! I am always striving to improve and continuing to learn.
Nice work!
I appreciate the support!
These are excellent! Curious…why the protuberances just below the boss? thanks

Ya, the first video I watched i figured you were a farrier. Not only your techniques, but when you "hemmed" the reins. I was sure.
Very nice. Sorry, I missed it. How thick was the rod, you started with.
I usually use 3/4" for my bigger tongs but for these littler guys I probably used 5/8".
Мастер!!
I think you are giving me too high of praise 😄 Thank you!
