  • This is my recently purchased Hillman Avenger, its been in a building since 1989, it started relatively easily, the video is 11 minuets long, in reality it took about 15! This is only my second video so sorry about the quality and that I had my phone at the wrong orientation.
Please have a look at my site www.classiccarbuyeruk.co.uk !

I had a 1973 Hillman Avenger GL back in the 1970's my second car after a Hillman Minx! Loved the Avenger, great handling car or I thought so at the time. I did 10's of thousands of miles in that car. Sure if suffered the usual rust problems on the body and the chassis, but the local garage helped me keep it on the road and it got through the MoT each year. I still have some photos of the car! Thanks for sharing the video David, enjoyed watching you bring this one back to life again!

The sound of that starter motor whining certainly brings back memories.

Yes great memories, you can certainly hear when the engine is turning over, unfortunately back in the 70's many Avenger owners heard the starter sound without that lovely engine starting shortly afterwards!

+Classic Car Buyer UK In all the years I had Avengers, I never once had a non-starter. They fitted this engine to the Peykan because they were so strong. I'd have another tomorrow if I had the chance, but I'm busy chasing a Hunter.

A nice video of your Hillman Avenger coming back to life after its long slumber if I may say so! Do you still have this car please? Certainly a very rare sight on our roads today!
I like the Lucas inertia starter motor sound & the engine running quite sweetly too with hardly any smoke from the exhaust.
I see your car has the old Lucas dynamo on & after the engine started I noticed the charge warning light staying on, did you check the dynamo charging the battery at all? Or is that the handbrake on warning light please? I stand corrected!
Nice bit of tuition throughout video about how to get a classic car back to life after a lay-up too. Look after this classic Hillman Avenger now if you still have it all the best.

Sad these cars had reliability issues, like you said they failed to start. Of course, I have heard that carbureted engines start differently than fuel injected ones. A trick I have used on carbureted engines is before starting, turn the key to on for a few seconds, then shut off (do NOT start the engine). Wait about 10 seconds and repeat. Then, set the choke, and crank the engine. That's worked before...

My Hillman Avenger has broken down twice in the last 20 years. Not that unreliable.

My then girlfriend had an ancient avenger in the mid 80s, it was a terrible starter, particularly on cold winter mornings

Rule one. Never get a girl to shoot video for you. It will be in portrait mode and therefore unwatchable on a computer or TV.
