After buying cheaper but equally good competitor sets that have only prints, I feel more than ever how badly I'm being ripped off when I buy an expensive Lego set and then have a sheet or two of stickers to deal with. If I want that sort of thing, I'll build a scale model and apply decals. That level of effort and care is required and expected there, but Lego should be easy and relaxing. You shouldn't need to stress about your one shot to get a sticker lined up perfectly. Especially not after you've paid a few hundred bucks for something.
I really love when you break down new sets coming out. You give us so many ways to look at the “value” of a set. I do love HP and have several sets, but not even most of them. This is an easy pass for me. I’d rather put my money into modular town buildings or LOTR sets.
Just want to add something...the biggest contributor to this sets price increase over the former set: 4 walls. Every face of this building is fully enclosed.
We really need to move to a new way to measure Lego value because price per piece no longer works if they are going to put 500 1x1 plates and tiles in a set. 20 years back PPP made sense, but Lego has ruined it. We need to move to weight, say Grammes of Lego Per Euro to have a better idea of value. Piece count has become a joke.
I've seen more and more reviewers, at least on the Continent, discussing value by weight. It's hardly perfect, but like you say, neither is price per piece. Lego isn't a unified, consistent commodity like, say, a particular pipe fitting or screw: Lego pieces vary by type, size, color, and potential usefulness for MOCs. And how do you quantify the value of the building experience and the utterly subjective feelings a buyer gets when they play with or see a finished set on their shelf?
I propose price per pick a brick price. I figure Lego has to roughly scale their pick a brick online prices based on how expensive pieces are to make, so if you figure out how much it would cost as a pick a brick order you have a good measuring stick. Of course this wouldn't be able to take into account the value of new prints, new colors, or exclusive minifigs, but it would provide a good estimate.
I honestly love LEGO'd interior builds and I wish this were less. Overall I'm just having such a hard time with LEGO's prices in general. Life isn't making these major purchases any easier and I'm less and less inclined by the price of this hobby to justify the cost
I am thinking with the THREE GWP's they are doing on this, if you are a Harry potter fan its a purchase on day 1, the clock, the extra Flourish in blotts fireplace, the polybag, it adds up to a decent deal, however after those are gone, it would be one to wait for a sale on it. It is a bit overpriced, especially if you have the 2010 or earlier set already.
The collector look pretty proportioned, I don’t have the old ones and I’m very tempted to get it. Maybe I’ll wait for a sale like i did with the jazz club.
I like Harry Potter and I have the 2020 Burrow set, but I've stopped buying LEGO Harry Potter as my family's interest in HP has waned and I'd rather spend that money on the newer castle and LOTR sets. But if it were 2-3 years ago and I didn't have the other Burrow set, I'd probably have bought this.
I feel this way about the Deku Tree, I really want it and have pre-ordered it, but am questioning as some reviews have noted the issues and lack of documentation for switching out between the two trees.
Spot on. I'm lucky to able to see assembled sets at a local Lego store, and they had this and the Nightmare Before Christmas set to look. Both were an easy pass. Just not enough there for my money.
I mean...the main thing the double number of pieces comes from is it having a backside, is it not? I think it has not that much to do with the enterior, just it not being a dollhouse style build
I really like this set and the minifigs. I HATE the stickers of course - however given how many details are present, it would have never been prints only. The price is a bit spicy, but given the price increases, might not be so bad. I might pass it though (too many other fun things to get this year and the next).
I Saw it yesterday un the shop and it's clearly overpriced for what we get plus there are too many stickers. Should be around 200 euros. And the model is not so iconic as the Hogwarts train, castle and Gringotts bank. Thanks for this detailed and objective review. Julien.
Very torn. Suppose to be almost done with Harry Potter here but there's a few sets that catch my eye. I was never able to get a deal on the 2020 Burrow and now wondering if I should just buy that one or pull on the CE one. I don't think the Exclusive Weasley Clock is enough of a pull for me. But it would be quite the piece for my HP display I'm working on. Got a week or so to decide here.
I definitely won't be getting this at full price. I don't find it that appealing, honestly. I like Harry Potter but I'm not a huge fan or anything. So maybe some day when it has a good discount, but knowing Lego there will be something that interests me more by that time.
Bit of interior?...Fair enough. But this sets interior is beyond ridiculous. I am old, and I liked the old sets that concentrated on the building and left the interior fairly basic, after all you never ever see the inside of the building and I like to see where my money is going. A 2000+ piece building should be a real showstopper, not look like a slight improvement. I would be constantly looking at it wondering where those extra 1000 bricks went because it barely looks bigger than the old one, and dont get me started on the price which is little better than daylight robbery when you compare the price to the one from just 2 years back. I could have sworn that Lego released a statement in the past couple of years where they said there would be, "No Stickers on Curved Pieces"...Was that just a dream? Did I imagine this statement? I am now trying to remember where I read it. Knowing that I could get another old one for 100 and just supersize the one I have and probably have a bigger better building means this new one dont stand a chance, my Lego budget is not infinite. Great vid, have fun building!
I have similar feelings about Lego interiors (and it's something one major reviewer, Jang, often notes). You build the interior once and then rarely if ever see it again. As an adult collector who's putting these things on a shelf to admire, as opposed to a kid playing with them, I don't want to pay extra for interior details (or minifigs, which I think are dumb). In fact, I'd love to have a series of cheaper modulars that are just empty shells, with all the care put into the exterior that you actually see.
The older version of this set is better for me. It is a boring set without villain characters. I would rather collect the new version of Hogwarts Castle sets. This is an easy skip for me 🎉🎉
I am a big Harry Potter fan, but I don't see myself ever buying this set. I am honestly bored of remakes (even if they are much improved) of sets that I've already purchased. I feel like part of me is also a little disappointed we didn't get more 18+ Diagon Alley shops or additional buildings for Hogsmeade. I see myself using money that used to go to Harry Potter sets on modular buildings or other sets in the Icons line.
Sets designed for collectors should be using prints and not stickers. Especially sets over $200

it's such a no brainer. the stickers alone are making me hesitate on the nightmare before christmas set.
Yeah I agree!

Yeah I think this is a BIG difference and is one of the reasons I am so excited to get it!

Good point

How many collectible tiles in this set please ? Thank you 😊

I like this burrow, but I have the 2020 one already and this UCS version feels unnecessary, especially with budget constraints.
If I already had a Burrow then I probably wouldn’t be getting this one either! Agree!

These videos are super helpful. Great work!
I will use my insider points to get a 50 bucks discount and buy it day one to also get the gwp’s.
I find the previous one to be a bit basic so I want to get this one. Is it coming out in september?
Good idea!!!
The collector look pretty proportioned, I don’t have the old ones and I’m very tempted to get it. Maybe I’ll wait for a sale like i did with the jazz club.
Yeah I don’t have one either so getting this one just makes sense, plus it look beautiful!

I totally get that!
If I already had a Burrow I wouldn’t get this one either! But I don’t so, role on September 😅
I love the set but I think it's just too expensive
My experience with LEGO in a nutshell:
It is expensive but considering I don’t own a Burrow yet I think I’m going to have to get this one (that’s what tell myself anyway 😅)
Honestly, if Lego didn't add the 3 additional GWP items then i would've wait for a sale.
It is rather expensive however I will still be getting it as I don’t currently own a Burrow and I think it’s looks freaking awesome!
I feel this way about the Deku Tree, I really want it and have pre-ordered it, but am questioning as some reviews have noted the issues and lack of documentation for switching out between the two trees.

I will not get this. Its overprised for the two sheets of stickers it contains.
I am already looking forward for the new HP series sets :)
Is amazing settttr love it
Same! ❤

Definitely feel the HP fandom tax here. Looks like a $200 set at best, a smaller modular building.

You are generous.
It’s junk. I’d scrap it for parts.
Not a Hairy Pothead: Chamberpot of Secretions fan 🤷♂️
It's too expensive
