I'm just impressed on how many people are now just getting hooked on RUSH, it's a good thing.
They not learning anything in school so at least rush and the professors lyrics are giving them a higher education
Right greatness is timeless
I love seeing first time listeners reactions when they find out there are only 3 members in Rush. I get it though. The fact that 3 people can make all that music is still impressive to me, even after 40 years of listening to them.
Since 1974. I saw my first concert in 75, at the age of 17. They backed up Nazareth. 👍😊
I am too. The music today sucks. I love seeing them react to a Rush song for the first time. It's how ! felt when I heard them for the first time.
Alex Lifeson is one of the most underrated guitarists out there.
Most underrated ever
@@efakter1 Well we'll have to agree to disagree then. I obviously think he is since that's what I wrote. Every time I see a list of the great guitarists I never see him on it, and I see guitarists who can't shine his shoes ahead of him. Geddy and Neil are at the top of their lists, and deservedly so, but Alex consistently gets no love. I can't understand why this is.
Eddie Van Halen was asked what it was like to be the world's greatest guitarist. He said they needed to ask Alex Lifeson that question.
I don't think he's underrated. If you follow RUSH you know he's one of the best!
@@brent4770 I do follow Rush, my favorite group, and I do know he is one of the best, but he's never on the list of the best guitarists, which is why I say he is underrated!! Geddy and Neil are on the top of their respective lists, but Alex never gets the credit he deserves, in my opinion.
Spirit of Radio is what happens when Rush decides to make a "radio friendly" song...
“Without music life would be a mistake.”
That’s some genius level shit there, my man👍
How true this is, and my favorite philosopher Frederick Nietzsche said that over 70 years ago.
Put that on my tombstone.
"Without music, life would be a mistake." -Jay Rah, 2020
IKR!! that really struck a chord in me. One of the best statements ever said about music. Im actually ashamed of Mozart for not saying that
I am a Hip-Hop lyricist, who is HIGHLY influenced by Neil Peart's lyricism. His schemes definitely rival anyone in the Hip-Hop game.
Well John time for you to listen to RUSH's Roll the Bones where Rush goes full on Rapping during the song.
Yup
Peart is a master writer
Yes, Neil was not only the best drummer of all time, but an absolute genius of a lyricist!! So intelligent and well read.
Rush, imo, is the greatest band of all time. You can find out for yourself. 40 years, 19 Studio albums, over 40 million records sold. World class musicianship and thought provoking lyrics.
Neil Peart taught me more than any other person in my life and we never met. This band has provided the soundtrack to my life and guided me through the darkest times.
Freewill, Limelight and Roll the Bones are good choices if you continue down the “rabbit hole”, but there really are no bad choices. I look forward to your next reaction.
✌️☝️☝️✌️
I’d say Zeppelin is better IMO. More tasteful vocals and a better drum sound and groove, and no competition on guitar. Jimmy Page light years ahead.
Jagged obviously subjective, I am a Led Zeppelin fan as well, I will not waste time trying to convince you I’m right. I can respect your opinion, it is yours after all. I will say that you might be mistaken in your assessment of Alex Lifeson, you would not be the first. I would give Jimmy the style points but substance belongs to Alex. I don’t know it to be a fact but I strongly believe that Alex could play anything that Mr. Page played throughout his career but I’m not sure that the opposite would apply. I could be wrong. I wish you well!
I love what you said about the most amazing band of all time! They each were phenomenal. Together they created magic. Well kept secret? Not commercial thank God.
Jagged Neil could do what Bonham did but Bonham could not play with the precision that Neil did. Like comparing Apples and Oranges
I have followed Rush since i was 12 years old! I'm 54 now.. I have also followed Pink Floyd, Queen & Zeppelin .. Why state one is "better" than the other? They're ALL great in their own ways! .. They're very different in sound & vibe from each other.. Therefore claiming one is better than the other, is simply a matter of YOUR TASTE! Queen, Pink Floyd etc are just as great, in their own way & should be respected for their amazing impetus to music! Rush are very very special, i totally agree.. However, so are Pink Floyd, Queen etc, in their own sound!
Nice reaction, bruh! Three masters of their craft. You do more Rush, I'll definitely be back.
More Rush is mos def on the way brotha. Appreciate you watchin, bless 🙏
@@jayrahvisions You love the drums, check out Neil Peart drum solo live from Frankfurt. he is your favorite drummer's favorite drummer
Jay Rah Vision Room 1st song I ever heard from them in the day. And I was 80’s B Boy in the Bronx. You know how someone is real? They know that we didn’t carry Cardboard, when threw down linoleum.. Seeing them out of fresh eyes. Great analytics and great emotion in your reviews. Appreciate you.
Just saw he reacted to Simple Man but I have to go through the Rush journey with him
“Without music life would be a mistake”
I think you just summed up the first side of 2112. Awesome statement!
" The Spirit of Radio " was written as a tribute to a Toronto radio station , 102.1" the spirit of radio " . They were way ahead of the curve musically and would give air time to up and coming local acts like Rush . I first saw them when they played my high school in Brantford in 1971 . In my mind , they were the best rock band ever to come out of Canada .
The Rush song "Roll the Bones" has some rap in it.
"Without music life would be a mistake." So true. Rush's song "2112" deals with a world that has life without self-expression forced upon the people. It is a fantastic song and I highly recommend it. Just make sure you pull up the lyrics to go along with it. I recommend the video that includes a graphic novel (comic) along with it.
I love Rush but RtB has the lamest rap in the world lol. I love Geddy, but he can't rap
@@necrophiliacin_lace628 😂
@@necrophiliacin_lace628 you speak truth. Canadian white boy did an experiment with his voice digitally lowered, but epic rap fail haha.
2112 is the shortest 20 plus minutes you'll ever experience.
@@necrophiliacin_lace628 That sounds like Geddy rapping to you? Lmao!
Geddy Lee is actually Gary Lee...Lee being his middle name not his last name...his mom had a thick accent and when she said Gary it sounded like Geddy so his friends hearing her started calling him Geddy as a nickname and it stuck.
Gary Lee Weinrib.
Still mourning Neil. An incredible man! Booksmart .His lyrics were ingenious. A deep and wonderful man. Approachable, kind. Great sense of humor. Homage to Neil!!
The reggae section is supposed to represent the tuning changes of a radio, the song was inspired by the Canadian radio station CFNY.
I'm proud of myself for searching the comments to find someone who said it before I did. Good job. Fun watching a reactor hit the first raggae bit, like whaaaa?
Geddy Lee was bass, vocals, AND keyboard.
One of the reasons that I love Rush so much is because each member is the best with their instrument. And because of how they change cadence in the songs. Everything combined is an emotional experience.
Saw them Roll The Bones Tour and this song was the encore extended version of course …
In all my life, I’ve never seen so many air drummers at one time🎉😂❤
Bass players/Lead singers:
Tom Araya - Slayer
Peter Cetera - Chicago
Paul McCartney - The Beatles
Les Claypool - Primus
Lemmy - Motorhead
Phil Lynott - Thin Lizzy
James Dewar - Robin Trower Band
I'm glad there are younger generations discovery the level of greatness RUSH gave the world in every aspect of their craft. Neal was not only the finest drummer that has ever gotten behind the skins but was the creative lyricist in the band. And helped drive the direction of his group. He was a published author of 5 or 6 books, and constantly throughout his life continued to study and learn from other drummer to perfect his technique in his craft. Of course Getty Lee is a phenomenal bassist and keyboardist and Alex Lifeson is the most over looked and under appreciated guitarist is rock. You should check out Neal's from solo live from Frankfort. RIP Neal there will never be another like you and we shall never see another band the caliper of Rush.
Geddy plays bass and keyboards, Alex plays lead and rhythm and Neil who passed away a year ago from Glioblastoma was the drummer. Neil wrote the songs for the band and Geddy did the arrangements and produced.
That sound is Neal playing a xylophone check out his drum kit, he spins around inside it! The absolute best musician that has ever lived, just my jaded old Canadian biases showing. Been listening to these guys since the 70s, very happy to see you young guys discover this band. Passage to Bangkok!
literary devices on display - example: alliteration - "Magic Music Makes you Morning Mood..." then later... "Machinery Making Modern Music." Neil's lyrics always on point.
Geddy Lee, lead singer, bass and keyboardist
Alex Lifeson, lead guitarist and Neil Peart,🥁drums.
Bass players that sing, Jack Bruce of Cream, Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, Glenn Hughes of Black Country communion/Deep Purple/Trapeze
Burke Shelley of Budgie ,James Dewer of Robin Trower band , Roger Waters of Pink Floyd,Greg Lake of Emerson Lake and Palmer, John Wetton of Asia.
Sting Of The Police, Lemmy of Motorhead, Les Claypool of Primus, Paul McCartney of The Beatles, Tina Weymouth of Tom Tom Club.
You have missed the Nos 1 & 2 best bass playing singers of all time Paul McC arntney the Beatles and Chris Squire of Yes.
Props to the Budgie drop lol my uncles buddy told me to check them out when I was a kid if he never mentioned them I woulda never heard them
Um...hello! How could you forget Kip Winger of Winger??
@@ninthgate100 Chris Squire, while a fine vocalist, was not a lead singer. He was accompaniment. For the record, he was also an absolute monster bassist.
This song is the ultimate driving song. Some would say Red Barchetta is Rush's best driving song, but I'm straight up going with The Spirit of Radio. Red Barchetta would be a great next tune to react to so you can decide which is the better to drive to!
The Bass Player is also Geddy Lee! Neil Peart replaced the original drummer on their second album Fly By Night.
You are the first reactor that I've seen that actually listens to the lyrics too,,NP was a lyrical genious as you continue down the Rush rabbit hole you are going to realize this..And the greatest rock drummer EVER!
One thing I really love about you Jay is you totally get it! The meaning behind what Neal was saying and the total vibe of the whole thing. You’re a smart man.✌️
Doesn't take long. Once you've heard a few RUSH songs, you have a way of finding out their names. They are legend.
This song was released as a single on 1/1/1980 Early RUSH, try Anthem. Another great bass player/singer was Jack Bruce of Cream. 🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🙂
There were only 4 band members ever that recorded.
Geddy Lee: Bass, Keyboard, foot peddles and lead singer.
Alex Lifeson: Lead Guitar, foot peddles and second voice.
Neil Peart: Drums (percussionist because he plays more than just Drums) and wrote 99% of lyrics.
Neil replaced John Rutsey on the Drums after the first Rush Album due to John's health issues around diabetes and not being able to tour.
Hope this helps.
Mos def does cause google was no help lol
@@jayrahvisions In other words, it sucks to be John Rutsey.
Actually there has been more than 4 members. Ray Daniels ( Manager) fired Geddy and brought some other guy in. It didn’t last long.
@@billforster1010 Really?? I don't recall that ..... was it in the very early days?? Pre-debut??
Lauri Ivey pre debut.
Early RUSH, 'Working man' without Neil.. Early RUSH, 'Fly by Night', with Neil..
Yo, Jay I'm here for all this Rush love. They are lyrically deep and deeply talented. Remember: There are only 3 people in this band.
One like's to believe in the freedom of Music!!!!!!!!!!!!
From their third album, "The Fountain of Lamneth".
I'd love to hear your hip hop take on the Rush song Roll The Bones. It has a rap section.
Geddy does Bass, keyboards (with his feet), and vocals.
My husband used to work in radio. I could take you down my own rabbit hole of just how true this song is. To this day if he hears the word Salesmen, it puts him in a bad mood, lol
Lead singer bass players? Props to Paul McCartney and Sting!
Love your take on Peart's lyrics. Guy was a poet.
I remember when this song first came out. The funny part is that it means something completely different to me now than it did then. When you grow up your perspective changes, lol
Love your take on a brilliant lyricist and drummer from Toronto! RIP
Yes the lyrics always had a "free your mind and your ass will follow" mentality. Think for yourself
Referring to Neils lyrics as ‘bars’ made my week. 👏
This was from their 1980 album Permanent Waves. It was the 7th of 19 studio albums they released from 1974 to 2012. Retired in 2015 after their 40th anniversary tour.
That final tour featured a setlist just under three hours long. They were in their 60s and played like that for three hours. The set went backwards through their discography, so it actually got more complicated as the night progressed!
Simply amazing musicians!
Request for “Headlong Flight” from Rush’s last album. You’ll love it.
Neil Peart...a gift to this world. You could read his lyrics, and sit back. The music was just the bonus.
Another bass player that sang was Benjamin Orr with The Cars. He shared vocals with Ric Ocasek. Some fans didn't realize that there were 2 singers.
This is the first time I saw your channel and I subscribed before your reaction was over. Then I watched the rest and I'm happy I've found another reaction that I can't wait to see more.
Sting with The Police. Geddy's real name is Gary, but his mother had a very thick Polish accent that turned it into "Geddy". Lee is his middle name. Weinrib is his real last name. Remarkably, both his parents survived the Holocaust during WWII, having been held in Auschwitz, Dachau and Bergen-Belsen as child war prisoners....
The man behind the machine. 💯 the music comes from the heart of the musician even.if hes just banging 2 sticks together. ✌️❤️ from Ky
Fairly new to your channel, but one thing I love about watching your videos is hearing about your perspective on music and how you are able appreciate lyrics, drums, bass, etc. in different types of music. It's amazing to see the joy and impact that truly good music and lyrics can bring to people of different backgrounds and experiences.
"Afterimage" is another great one by Rush.
This song is about CFNY radio in the Toronto area that played mainly alternative, independent artists that you couldn’t hear anywhere else. Their tag line was The Spirit of Radio. This was the first Rush song ever to play on that station.
That guitar sound at the solo, Epic, your reaction, excellent too, love it keep it up with Rush,
If you want to hear a mastery of instruments, listen to their song - La Villa Strangiato
Absolutely YES!
Great reaction! You...get it.
Neil Peart was a voracious reader who devoured books even on the road. Hence the articulate lyrics. Check out his books, Ghost Rider was written soon after the tragic deaths of his daughter and wife. His interviews reveal what an eloquent, thoughtful man he was, with humility and humor. I may be wrong, but I think it was Geddy who dubbed him "Professor". Certainly appropriate. RIP. 🐾
Awesome buddy....next up....Xanadu....Exit Stage Left version....prepare to be blown away.✌️
Great!
Xanadu for sure. Exit Stage Left definitely!
"But glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity" They made a pack going into their last chance make it or break it album that they would do their music and not cave into their labels creative demands...and they were prepared to lose it all...so that bar kinda refers to those kind of compromises put upon artists and glittering prizes is of course the distractions of material wealth you get caught up in when you have success.
"It's not the machine; it's the man behind the machine." GREAT QUOTE.
Love your reaction to this. Im a 50 y/o and grew up with Rush. They were deep and creative, miss that in music. Makes me happy to see young dudes appreciate it
I applaud you for opening your mind to the amazing craftsmanship, lyricism, talent, and creativity of RUSH. Keep exploring. You will not be disapp
You're one of the few people I've seen reactions to who really get and understand Rush as a whole. Great reaction, man!
When rush came out they was considered nerds. Now they first ballot Hall of Fame .
There music is something someone will hear 50 years from now and be blown out the water on. There music is generational .
I paused it when you gave Neil the lyrical props he deserves. Damn right. Different era, different place, falls in love with rap; he knew how to put words in music we all can relate to. Many rapers have done it too. But not many rock star drummers have......
About bass players that were also lead singers, Phil Lynott, an Irish singer and song writer, founded the group Thin Lizzy. Great music, and I loved his voice. Several songs you might want to check out are "The Boys are back in Town" and "Jailbreak".
Geddy Lee also plays the keyboards. Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy and Greg Lake of ELP were bass players and lead singers. Don Henley of the Eagles is the drummer and lead singer for The Eagles, Phil Collins was drummer and lead singer for Genesis
Blew me away first time I heard it in the radio.Got me started on my Rush rabbit hole journey back in 1979
Geddy is the bassist, lead singer...also the keyboard player, AND played foot pedals to add to the sound....sometimes playing and singing several of them at the same time.
Bass player and Lead singer Geddy Lee, lead guitar Alex Lifeson and drummer is Neil Peart. original band members since 1974
Love your take on artists making music. Great musicians exist in all genres of music. We should all give them their props.
Raw and hungry, listen to Anthem off Rush second album. This is the first album with Peart on drums. He comes out on fire, the song is on fire too.
Thank's, great reactions!
Old Rush fan from N. Y. Now in Melbourne Australia.
oh yes, Anthem... what a freaking debut!!!
Agreed. Great song and Raw
Bass playing lead singers. Paul McCartney(Beatles), Brian Wilson(Beach Boys), Peter Cetera(Chicago), Suzi Quatro, Greg Lake(Emerson, Lake & Palmer), Roger Waters(Pink Floyd), Janice-Marie Johnson(A Taste Of Honey), Sting (The Police)
Isn't Tom Araya of Slayer the bassist as well?
Yes, everybody has a name, including one of the founding members -John Rutsey, the original drummer - R.I.P.
Neil PEERT is the pronunciation.
Geddy plays bass, keys, occasional rhythm and lead guitars.
Alex plays guitars, mandola, pedal synth and very occasionally played a keyboard riff.
Jeff Jones filled in for two weeks in high school and was never a touring or recording member. He did, however, go on to play with Ocean (That's him on "Put Your Hand in the Hand") and then was bassist for Red Ryder and Tom Cochrane.
Rutsey played on the first album and did local shows but never toured.
Two words explain Rush. "It's Rush!"
I agree! Peart was one of the best lyricists in rock. Great reaction!
Imagine being a 15 year old kid who's never been to a concert before and you're older neighbor at about 5 in the evening asks if you'd like to go with a bunch of other guys to a general admission concert to see a band called Rush and you've never heard of them before. Of course I begged my mother to go, I was allowed to go and the rest is history they became my favorite band instantly. It was the Permanent Waves tour with Spirit of Radio just blowing me away. How could three people put out that much quality sound it was just amazing to me. Stage presence for each was amazing.
I saw this concert also, in Calgary, I was already hooked though!
Thanks Jay for taking the time to listen. Old school to me but now its for you. Enjoy my friend.
Rush knows how to lay down a solid groove and stick to it and their transitions are out of this world.
Saw Rush in High School 1976.
I enjoyed your honest and intuitive assessment of this classic song. You earned my subscription.
Other bassist/lead singers--Sting(The Police), Benjamin Orr (The Cars), Jack Bruce (Cream), Roger Waters (Pink Floyd), and sometimes Rick Danko (The Band). The Band actually had three different members who sang lead depending on the song.
This song was released in 1980. Rush's first album was made in 1974, but the first album Geddy Alex and Neil did was their 2nd album in 1975. I suggest from their 2nd album listening to By-Tor and the Snowdog. Speaking of bassists who lead sing, Sting from The Police comes to mind.
I love listening to your reaction to the BARS!! much respect!! Music is Music, it doesn't matter the genre.
Bass players who were lead singers:
Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy. Half white, half black, 100% Irish, and charismatic as hell.
Sting (real name Gordon Sumner) of The Police. (He went on to have a huge solo career, too.)
Benjamin Orr of The Cars. Most people think Ric Ocasek was the lead singer, but Orr sang most of their songs.
Jack Bruce of Cream. Eric Clapton did some singing, but Bruce sang most of their songs. Great bass player, too.
Of course, Paul McCartney of the Beatles played bass, and he and John Lennon split most of the lead singing duties.
RUSH is an awesome band! Ive been a fan of RUSH since 1976!
I always appreciate watching someone react to a band. , or particular song for the first time. Thanks this .
My fave Rush tune!! Rush was known as The Masters of the Transition; this songs shows you why. And Neal Peart making the chimes sound cool!
I appreciate a man of music that is open minded enough to make jump to Rush.
I really admire that.
I love Rap and Rush myself.
I have alot of tunes I love from all genres.
Jay Rah Vision Room
Thank you.
I grew up with this. This came out before I was in high school. This was a time in pop music when music was more important than image.
The singer for "The Cars" played bass. Primus has a sick bass player singing weird songs. A lot more that I can't remember. Rock on!
Bass player who was also lead singer: Sting when he was with The Police.
Leamme, Motorhead
Les Claypool, Primus
The original people are the final people with the exception of the first drummer, John Rutsey, who was in the band when it formed and also played on Rush’s debut album. He was then replaced by Neil Peart on their second album, on which he also became the band’s lyricist. He actually joined Rush two weeks before their first US tour. The band then had the same personnel until the band retired 40 some odd years later. (I believe that “The Spirit of Radio” first appeared on their “Permanent Waves” album from 1980, six years after their eponymous debut disc.)
For early Rush, check out Anthem and Bastille Day. This was from their 7th album. Tom Sawyer was on the 8th album. Life is beautiful! Loved it!
Love how you're catching these lyrics and the musicianship, Great reaction.
Sting was the bass player and the lead singer of The Police. Loved your reaction.
The original 3 were Geddy (with a short e not i) Lee on bass, keyboard and lead vocals, Alex Lifeson on lead guitar and vocals, and John Rutsey. Rumsey left due to health reasons, he was diabetic. He was replaced by Neil Peart (with a long e sound) who also wrote ALL the lyrics And arrangements! And their was never any changes to the members after that!
"Without music, life would be a mistake". Yes! Also, the reaction was awesome and to Rush so yes, subscribed 🤘
Lemmy from Motorhead was bass and lead singer, Les Claypool of Primus is bass and singer. Karen Carpenter did drums and sing in the band named after her and her brother: The Carpenter's, so did Phil Collins in Genesis and Don Henley of The Eagles.
Oh I just heard you say on a Led Zep react that you are a "drum man" well Neil Peart is THE drummer. Try out his live drum solo live in Frankfurt (its on the YT).
Ok ok I may be fangirling but please check it.
Neil and John Bonham are the finest - pure genius - pity the best ones always seem to die far far too soon. As Robert Plant says "ooo it makes me wonder"
