I worked for Phil for a few years in recent time. He's a wonderful man, exactly as you may imagine him from TV. I was too young to watch them live, but I really enjoy seeing things like this. Thanks for the upload.

I think we can only say that because the 60's shows are lost. The one episode, with Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Judy Carne, George Goebel, Carol Wayne and Robert Wagner (from 1969) is the greatest one, EVER! I would bet the 60's shows blow everything else out of the water, based on what little we have been able to see.

This was filmed at the WLWD(Dayton,Ohio) studios. Phil was a local personality.(this was before Marlow)
In Sept or Oct of 1970 my(9th grade) high school science class had a week long outing at a local (Grant)outdoor life science center.
The parents of the students were asked to volunteer to be chaperones for the kids at night.
Phil Donahue's son Mike was in my class, and Phil stayed with us for one or 2 nights.(I also knew another son Mark).

I was born in '72 so my memory of everything in this era is often hazy but I truly feel the 70s was one of the last best decades. The best cars, the best movies, the best music, the best clothes that are still often imitated. I love those thick eye glasses and shades they wore. We had both Elvis and Led Zeppelin existing in the same universe. And look at what Mr. Carson is wearing. I couldn't pull that off if I tried.I been re watching movies, documentaries and everything on the 70s just to catch up on what I missed or don't fully remember.

I have to admit, I liked the calm and politeness of TV talk shows back then. I miss Donahue and Carson too, though Donahue I thought was really cool - when he was not having a totally goof-ball show on. The end of these shows signaled the end of the American all-together culture and the start of division and divisiveness that has never stopped.

1:24 - well Johnny certainly made up for this in later years. He mentioned he was taking "a little more time off" - come 1971 he would never host Monday nights, that would be a guest host. Come 1980 he would only host on a Tuesday night for half of the time he was hosting during the year, the other half would be reruns of his show. And then by 1985 he was down to three nights a week on 37 weeks of the year.

Every hand gesture, every turn of the head, every touch of the jacket is robotic and meticulously designed to distract from his utter discomfort in his own skin. Johnny was an immensely shy man and a brilliant host, he probably felt most himself when the cameras went live but when the lights went out he was a totally different person that nobody knew. It's amazing to think 'personality' is not real, its deception. This man was the most watched human in history and a beautiful deception.

It's hilarious that Limbaugh is angry about Colbert being hired to replace Letterman...and used Carson as an example of a good non-liberal host.
"Carson opposed the Vietnam War, and capital punishment, favored racial equality, and was against criminalizing extramarital sex and pornography. He avoided explicitly mentioning his views on The Tonight Show, saying he 'hates to be pinned down,' as that would 'hurt me as an entertainer, which is what I am.' As he explained in 1970, 'In my living room I would argue for liberalization of abortion laws, divorce laws, and there are times when I would like to express a view on the air. I would love to have taken on Billy Graham.'"

Jesse, you miss the point of conservatism, which is basically a belief in the idea of self determination. Government out of our lives in the bedroom, boardroom and bank whenever possible. Being liberal is equated with government interference in all aspects of our lives. Takes courage to be conservative. Little of anything to be liberal, except an acceptance of everything.

I agree. "the persona" was an act. smoke & mirrors. Johnny Carson himself was a very shy and insecure man. public persona is PURE EGO. - but it is certainly necessary for a great performer.

You have to factor in what sponsors, producers, etc wanted/demanded. Phil could have been getting pressure. Also, society in general was beginning to dumb down. It continues down to this day.

Does anyone know what the name of the theme music is on this episode of the Donahue show? I remember hearing it as a kid, I've always loved it, and I heard it again a while back while listening to a Dutch online radio station called "Old Man's Radio", so it must have been a hit in Europe.
