Any engine that spits fire out of its stub exhausts has my vote too! That Merlin was brilliant. Had a chat with the owner, what a nice fellow. Nearly 99k John, won’t be long!
2:37 Nice see one of the smaller Hornsby engines! My dad worked at their factory in Lincoln and the open days at the research centre usually had one of the big ones running... they wouldn't allow visitors without ear defenders these days, we were advised to stick our fingers in our ears 🤣
Thanks John for the RR Merlin engine clip, the sound of that V12 is like no other. The Ruston is very nice but completely different. As for lathe tool center height , Stefan Gotteswinter did a video on that recently and it's well worth watching. Keep up the good work! Robert
Thanks John, the Merlin will always be my favourite sounding engine. The tip with the ruler will come in handy as my wife has bought me a QCTP for my South Bend lathe as an anniversary present, (although I'm not supposed to know that yet).
Meteors all went in tanks, Merlins flew :) :) the meteor was adapted from crashed Merlin engines (at the very beginning) for use specifically in ground vehicles. They didn’t have to be build to the extreme tolerances of aviation engines, for obvious reasons, aeronautical engineering being what it is. The meteors could also be cast from iron instead of aluminium. Both are amazing engines but if you’re looking for the chicken/egg answer, the Merlin, as in nature, lays the egg.
All great video John, but I really enjoyed the Ruston and Merlin running, fantastic engines! Cheers. Oh, and better light that blowlamp of Deb's out in the middle of the road or on a football pitch! 8^) don't ask me why I say that!

John I've got a slight problem on my Warco 250v lathe, its cutting a slight taper when not using the tail stock, its not terrible but its not perfect, any advice on how to remedy would be much appreciated.
there's not an engineering enthusiast on earth who doesn't love the merlin. what a masterpiece.

I learned the pocket-ruler centering method over 40 years ago. Still use it to this day!
Happy days John, nice one mate, love me some big old engines, fantastic to see and hear them running, thanks for sharing
Nice example of how a solid lifter/tappet is supposed to rotate around 3:30.
Thanks John. Got to say, you looked really professional filming the beautiful Merlin. I thought it was Stephen Spielberg or something 🙂. 👍🇳🇱

My old workmate Peter Grieve with the Merlin
Thanks for another intereting video, great film of the engines but would be even better with a bit of commentary,
comment noted thanks for the constructive feedback

Like the engine! Cheers for the tips.
The Merlin such a sweet sound. PERFECT
Hi John great video would love to see how you sharpen drills by hand. thanks john

If only that were Norton's John Hudson's roarer !
Great video John, keep'um coming.
Thanks John

I have had a bit play with blow lamps in the past lol
@@doubleboost I figured you had John! 8^)
The Meteor engine is land based from a Tank. Merlins and Griffins in the Spitfire, Merlins only in the Hurricane
And the Lancaster?

Just for laughs it is a Griffon not a Griffin
Merlins are nice but I like a Griffons better 🙂
My favourite engine is a Rolls Royce Spey.
And of course, the Merlin is possibly the most famous piston engine of all time.
Bristol Olympus ;)
These Wednesday episodes are just the job, John. I seem to recall you bought a caravan for your weekend getaways, how are you enjoying it?
I have a "micro camper" with a good awning . New car and caravan next year . We are getting to old for this camping larch .
👌
You know what sounds even better than a V12 Merlin firing up? Yea neither do I.
4 Bristol Olympus' going of the Rapid Start system in the Vulcan

Ummm the Meteor was a de-rated Merlin used in tanks ...
You should have kicked the chocks on the merlin and filmed your mate.

It depends how the headstock is attached to the bed
