Roland is so kewl a living legend that despite worth millions, uses a $100-200 combo Redington fly outfit to catch the big ole largemouth bass.
I love how Roland always Keeps it real for the average fisherman or woman. Nothing pretentious about him thats what makes him Americas greatest beloved fisherman! ☺️🎣🎣🎣

Biggest i have caught on a fly rod is 3 1/2 lbs. Was just learning to fly fish. It was a 7 weight rod and line. Didn't know the correct way to hold the line. Now little over 30 yrs later i still have a scar on my left pointing finger where the fly line burned into it. Best scar i ever got lol. Great Show Mr. Roland love your vids.

My favorite bass fly is the Dahlberg Diver, a deer hair bug with a conical nose. Twitch and it dives an inch under the surface and then bobs back up. Bass can't resist it. Caught a 5 lbs largemouth bass, a nice pickerel, and a huge warmouth bass on the same outing all on the D D. Also recommend the Orvis Bank Shot shooting head flyline. Greatly reduces fatigue from much fewer false casts, makes casting big bugs and poppers easier, greatly increases distance, and is especially good when sitting low in the water in a kayak, when using a regular weight forward line feels like you are casting uphill.

Up here in the NW we get so trout/Salmon/Steelhead centric we ignore the Warm water species! Never a better day than float tube pop-pin and best thing, no competition and no gators! Thanks Roland!

Roland, I’ve been fishing for over 60 years now and I started fly fishing about 8 years ago and I still bass fishing, but you are so right about landing a 5 pounder on a fly rod. I caught a 3+lb largemouth on my 3 weight last year and it surprised me I could even play such a fish, but I landed her
I’ve got two Lefty Kreh flyrods from TFO, an Orvis 6wt, and two White River rods from BPS, and dozens of hand tied poppers, but those Betts brand will get it done and in all sizes and have been around for decades. It’s great to see you out there being stealth, and peaceful enjoying yourself fly fishing ... loved this video.

I loved it. And I don't mean to make you feel old, but this video reminded me of fishing with my paternal grandfather. Thank you for that. We spent many days in canoes on farm ponds. He had a fly rod and I had a bait caster. Anyway, thank you again. Oh, and nice fish.

You need to get those big fish on the reel so you don't have to deal with all of that slack line that will come back to haunt you. Great video, keep them coming.

When I'm fighting a big tarpon or any other big saltwater fish, I get it on the real as soon a I can. I've fished big rivers with Lefty Kreg for smallmouth where we got them on the reel after hooking them on a long cast. Fly rodding big Stripers also. For the most part, bass don't make a long run so if the water is weedy, I don't want to slack up on him by tryin to get 20-40 feet of line on the reel

This is how I started bass fishing! Clousers, deceivers, woolly buggers, and "bass bugs" work pretty great too. As water warms obviously fly fishing becomes less effective as you can't get deep enough very effectively. Anyway...that's when I start senko fishing! Great video.

Oh my gosh! I've been throwing poppers and streamers to bass for years, so I wasn't all that mesmerized by the fly rod, but the very first thing I noticed was the boat fenders being used for ready-made canoe outriggers! Slap my forehead! Why haven't I thought of that before? I enjoy rowing a canoe down small streams, so a little extra stability is always handy.. Thanks for the idea.

Amazing fisherman and good to see several things here. I loved seeing your bass pro shop/ nitro boats in addition to the favorite rods emblems on the side of your canoe. Johnny Morris is the real deal . Dave Whitlock is the real deal also, what a talent that man is. Loved watching your talent of fly fishing, and although I'm no fly fisherman, it was easy to follow all the tips you were giving out as you applied them. Great video👍👍

One of my favorite ways to fish is with a fly rod. I'm in the deep south, so no trout here. Bass, Bluegill, saltwater trout, etc. Love the top water strike, sometimes ferocious, others so soft you just see the bug disappear with barely any water movement.

I remember watching Roland catch the biggest bass I’d ever seen on a fly rod using a popper. This would have been about 1979-80. I had never seen a fishing show before. This would’ve been around 1980. It was probably on ABC wide world of sports or something. I remember thinking who is this guy? Guys get paid to fish on TV? Bass get that big? Anybody know if that video footage still exists???

So alot of people I've fished with just want to cast out, let there lure sink to the bottom and spend the day drinking beer, but I want to catch fish, and I feel like this passive style of fishing is ineffective, I've watched tons of videos about working a sinko or a variety of other soft plastic lures, but my pals tell me to stop it, I'll never catch anything like that, just be patient and wait all day. so my question amounts to this; is working the bait more effective than just sitting a live worm on the bottom? And also, should I work a live worm like a sinko (lifting up and letting it sink down)?
