    Pretty good summary, but I think he missed an important theme. Throughout the whole book there is constant reference to the will of God as regards to the repayment of wrongs. Monte Cristo sees himself as the conduit through which God's vengeance can e poured out. In this way, Dumas is advocating that God is just, and even if it takes a life time, those who do good will receive a reward and those who do bad receive punishment. That's why Catarouse denounces God until Dante's reveals himself, because only then is it shown to him that God takes an active hand in justice on earth. Also, Catarouse wasn't technically considered one of the conspirators that got Dantes in prison. He was a bystander, but his lack of action allowed for Dante's incarceration. That's why The Count, in the guise of an abby, actually gave him a diamond as recompense for being a friend to Dantes all those years ago. Catarouse then loses his fortune by committing a crime, and continues in a life of avarice and that's what leads to his downfall.

    • @jamesbarbato9685
      @jamesbarbato9685 7 лет назад +33

      Hi Ethan, very nice comment. I would just like to suggest that Caderousse is much more than a "bystander"; and he certainly is no "friend", even all those years ago. If anything, Edmond is naive--choosing to see people in a positive light even if their actions do not warrant such consideration. Please reread chapters 3-5 (The Catalans-The Plotters-The Betrothal Feast) as you may discover, like I did on my second reading, that Caderousse, prior to becoming too drunk, fans the flames of this conspiracy through his rhetoric. Among other things, he certainly goads Fernand into action. The "diamond" in my estimation, is a "test" of Caderousse's character--which is eventually revealed. This tension on God's will, justice, vengeance etc. that you speak of that exists throughout Dumas's epic work is spot on and certainly something that man grapples with today. Still, a very nice comment--thank you.

    • @DarkcIoud1111
      @DarkcIoud1111 7 лет назад +7

      Even if Caderousse may have inspired the idea, he for the most part began defending Dantes when he saw that Danglas was taking this joke way too seriously and began to protest the whole idea. However every time he protested, they just got him more and more drunk until he no longer knew what was going on. As a person he may not have been the best of people, but he did give Dantes his first job as he mentions giving him his first piece of silver and seems generally happy at how far Dantes has come since then.
      What is interesting is that Dantes after escaping jail sees himself as an agent of providence, dishing out charity and revenge as he sees fit. With Caderousse, he gives him a diamond as a test of character but as a result sets of a chain of events that makes things worse. His wife and the jeweler were both killed needlessly and Caderousse went on to become an actual criminal instead of just a coward. You could say that with Danglas' bank going bankrupt, anyone banking with him may be in deep trouble. Villenfort's family are killed after Dantes inspires his wife to kill them after their long talk of poison. The only real death that doesn't seem to bad is Fernand, who kills himself.

      Ethan Rummel Monte Cristo at the very end realizes he was foolish to believe that. The topic of revenge is the glue that ties together the themes of happiness in life, and justice. Seeing himself as a divine being was kind of mental gymnastics Dante used to justify his “scorched earth” revenge tactics. For example he quotes the Bible to Mercedes to justify killing Albert. It’s only after he drops the pretense of being god’s instrument that he learns to exact his revenge more appropriately. Nobody can pretend to know what god wants and justifying punishment on many people who did nothing to you by pretending to be a divine conduit is just crazy. After his conversation with Mercedes in which he admits to being mortal is his final revenge on Danglars where he leaves him poor but spares his life, showing his progression as a character.

    The way the story is written is amazing ever single character back story or subplot becomes crucial to the actual story. The characters themselves all feel so real each one is so well projected with personality. I did think it was silly how the count was able to tunnel under the Villefort's house to Valentine's room in something around two days but I don't see how he'd work something else in its place. I'd say the writing in this book is the best I've ever read.

    The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorites. I was forced to read classics, however I took this one on my own. It shows how corruption and others' coveting and envy can destroy innocent men. Fortunately, my man ran into a man of the overrated Catholic Church that had integrity and morals, so such man would not reveal hidden treasure to haters that didn't deserve it. Being that political prisoner, he builds a tunnel just to find any human on the other side due to the isolation and loneliness. Both men find true friendship, as well as the same story of corruption, greed, and hate by haters. Count is sad by his companion's demise, however does what he has to in order to escape, using the tragedy as an advantage. He finds the treasure, sets things right with his perps, but he discovers that innocent people were also hurt, and sees that sometimes acts of revenge come back to bite you. He decides to value peace and become a better man, thus our hero lives the rest of his life a bit wiser and kinder.

      @happyslowpoke8982 8 лет назад +14

      Yep, and in most recent iterations that I'm aware of (musical, Guy Pearce film, etc.), it's structured that way for the audience to understand better, because God knows, the book gets extremely complicated! Heck, I don't even think they included Caderousse in them just because his role wasn't significant enough.

    • @marvingayefan1703
      @marvingayefan1703 8 лет назад +33

      Not at all. Danglars was the worst offender because the letter of denunciation/plot against Dantes was his idea in the first place. Without him Dantes would never have gone to jail. Also, Danglars was the one of the 4 men who PERSONALLY disliked Dantes. Villefort didn't even know him. Catarousse hated everyone, and Fernand didn't dislike him personally--he was just jealous about Mercedes. It does feel a little weird that Dantes let Danglars off the hook at the end, and he didn't die or go crazy like the others. But on the other hand, he was the only one who apologized/repented at the end. None of the others apologized.

    I remember having to read the book in school & having to do a report on it. During the end of the yr when there's nothing to really do, we would watch movies for "class". I remember watching the old movie & loving it (because even though it had the trappings of a basic revenge/love story, it had other elements intricately entwined into the plot). The best thing to me was how carefully interwoven all the characters were to not only the main character, but to other major characters in the story. When I was an adult I bought the movie & it became my favorite movie (so much so that, when I eventually lost the dvd, I bought another--which I luckily found in a bargain bins, yrs later & still have. Luckily everything's going digital now, so I can always find a copy online).

In modern times we wouldn’t understand such a betrayal ON SCREEN because Dumas does an excellent job at describing her ongoing despair at Edmund being gone and her reticence even as she is married and has an almost adult child with Ferdinand (i might be getting his name wrong). In the book, I remember him being unwilling to get back with her because he felt unclean and “new” due to his career of revenge. She still loved and wanted him.

      It is not just the 2002 version, but the 1934 version.
      There is the 1988 version that the end is count and Haydee.

      One story that the protagonist returns to his first love is The man who laughs by Victor Hugo.

      Gywnplaine returns to dea, but she is just like haydee and would wait for Gwynplaine as long as necessary and she falls in love with him when he saves his life as Haydee with edmond. Both have a strong devotion to their saviors.

      The 2002 version is an attempt to justify why she married Mondego. When simple loneliness could happen.
      There was a lot of hurt between the two, he had because she married Mondego, if it were another man he would not be so bitter. Mercedes was bitter that Edmond almost killed his son. Abert would never accept his mother's relationship with the one responsible for his father's death, Mercedes did not love that Edmond so bitter, but an Edmond who stayed in the past, a sweeter and gentler man.
      The image she had was different from the current Edmond, it was not that man she fell in love with, his personality is different.
      For Mercedes to be happy, it is much more appropriate that she meets another man who is not bitter and somber like Edmond.
      "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." - Anna Karenina by Tolstoy
      Haydee was the most suitable woman for Edmond because she had a similar life experience, she was Edmond's mirror. Much more than a mushy romanticism of hollywood and muscais, two people who are alike are more likely to succeed. Haydee understands Edmond much better and understands why he is like that than Mercedes. She is not a bad person, but she does not have the similar life experience to understand him.
      That end of the 1922 version with Albert and Haydee is very naive. It looks like one of those silly story movies. He's the son of her father's killer, it would hardly work out like that, it's a very stupid idealization. Cinema lacks more maturity.
      That naivety of finding forgiveness and love, lacks more maturity like Dostoevsky's books.

    Excellent, excellent, excellent!!! With five minutes of spot on commentary it is with much trepidation that I find fault (slight) with roughly 20 seconds. Danglars is not "rob[bed] of every single dime he got" (3:00)--the Count permits him to keep 50,000 francs (Dumas, p. 1,447); and Caderousse has no part in the actual writing of the letter (0:42)--remember, he is far too drunk at this point to have written anything. I am curious as to what others think of the fact that the mastermind of this saga (Danglars) is the only one of the four guilty individuals to receive pardon (chapter 116) and what Dumas may be suggesting by granting him mercy.

      Holy crap! I clearly read the abridged version.
      Longest novel I've read is either _Sacajawea_ or _Atlas Shrugged,_ both around 1,100 pages. But nothing 1,200+! I guess the unabridged _Count_ needs to go on my reading list next to the unabridged _Les Misérables._

      @@BradyPostma The unabridged version I read was from penguin classics and when it was released it was a new translation by Robin Buss in 1996. I read it for the heck of it my junior year of high school and I read it in a week. I stayed up way too late reading it and couldn't put it down.
      The main part of the book was 1243 pages. Pages 1245-1276 was notes that explains phrases and other events in each chapters and other things and what they referenced.
      My mom has read the unabridged Les Miserables and apparently there is a part of the book where Hugo spends 50 pages talking about how good this priest is.

    • @BradyPostma

      @@thepayne7862 - The climax of _Atlas Shrugged_ is a 50-page political diatribe. I read that book in a week, too. I'd never read a book that was about politics and how society should be organized presented as a moral issue before. In hindsight, it was pretty preachy and clunky. But at the time, my young mind was blown!
