This is the best U17 double I have seen! Fast, refined, but also 100% efficient?

  • Axel Dickinson is an excellent coach, and he has got an excellent crew!
This U17 double with pretty new rowers is awesome. Seriously, this double is fast and promises great things for this years' Mahdi Cup.
However, there are ineffeciencies - of course. And we take almost half an hour to finely elaborate them all :)

Taking time after the catch is important, makes it possible to come together and to relax, to focus on using the legs.

2:10 Have you listened to the Podcast Brow Show? with JDS about his 2k WR project? Before talking about training for the 2k. They talked a lot about the training they did in the AUS 4-. And one key aspect of their training was talking about the sessions for hours. But at first agreeing on a terminology. What do they mean by fast? Is fast good (Like boat speed) or bad (rushing the slide). I found that really interesting and am trying to implement that into the training!

Hi Aram. Always enjoy your analysis and have learned a lot, especially around the front end of the stroke. But unfortunately I don't follow with the analysis around not using the body early. If you can, please review Pertti Karppinen, Thomas Lange, Xeno Muller, Olaf Tufte, and we'll add Damir Martin (as he was so close) as to just what gave them the advantage. The front end of he stroke is most efficient at transferring energy through the oar (hydrodynamics) that supports front end loading. Your thoughts?

after looking at your "perfect single sculling form" video and then this. I noticed that I have a similar problem as these two boys. At the catch, my lower and upper back get separated the same way it does for these two. I feel like it may be a flexibility thing because no matter how I force my hip angle to get more aggressive, I cant seem to keep my upper and lower back together. I have been rowing for about as long as them, and I'm the same age, so it kinda makes sense that others would share this issue.

@@goose9246 yo how did you fix this? are you talking about how you sort of reach over your legs at the catch? I have and issue like that and am looking how to get rid of it- I can force it to row normally on an erg and such but otw it’s a bit wonky

Fantastic pair and fantastic speed 😮but considering all your points could we add that the their heads are not in the same position … can you explain why the bow is keeping his straight up all the way and the stroke tilts it down to the chin at the catch? Will the latter be better ? Or the opposite ? And will head movement have an effect on speed ?

Ideally, the head thoracic spine should naturally be aligned with the rest of the spine.
However, if you look at Matthew Pinsent or the Croatian stroke of Sydney (I believe it was 2000) their styles are way off, but still integrate well. Well, just like the classic Kiwi pair. There is no perfect rower

Just a comment on that double. It appears their weight is too far forward in the boat - the bow is dipping too low and stern not tipping far enough. suggest moving their weight more towards the stern. What do you think?
BTW, Rob Waddell can be added to the list of front end loaded scullers.

If you look at the video when it swings round to the stern and watch the depth of the blades in the water, you will see that bows blades go just a little deeper during mid drive. Is caused by the upper body compensating for the increased load as you say?

I'd like to see the blade work a lot cleaner for the flat water. Looks like they would fall into the bow if there feet were on top of the shoes. 1984 men's 2x, Gold
